Review Summary
At long last the POT of baseball couldn't help but resist releasing a movie? Well actually major doesn't have that much in common with prince of tennis aside from length but yeah. The movie was actually released some time ago but hasn't been subbed till recently by none other then MJN. The honest truth is I have grown a bit tired of the overall major series, however the movie was a good refreshing breath of air.
The movie covers the period between the first and second seasons. If you have watched thoses two seasons then you will know the results of the movie. If not the movie sorta ruins some later things in the series. Basically the movie follows Goro after he moves away from mifune and joins a new little league club. He meets a new array of characters and with his new team aim for the little league nationals.
Overall the quality of the movie was quite good. I think after watching a certain amount of this anime you grow to expect certain shortfalls that were much less in the movie. Thus I can say that the movie is definitely worth watching for any sports anime fan. It is a very good addition to the major series as well.
Detailed Points
Animation
Anime movies always have a bigger budget then series thus better animation is usually expected. That being said the animation from the series is quite low so any improvement could be seen as quite clearly. That being said the animation in the series still left quite a good impression on me.
Background
The series had some stunning backgrounds shoots that included the sky, the stadium and various baseball fields, practice fields and many more. They didn't try to cheap out on the details.
Movement
A big problem with Major is the choppy movements and repeat frames during games. The movie had quite solid and fluid games and no clear repeated frames. The only shortfall for me was the exaggerated pitches. I mean sure the kids are pitching at 120km? maybe but the way they showed it they looked even faster then the pitches Goro throws later in the series that go up to 100 mph.
Characters sets
The characters looked alright not much change from the series. Only one thing stood out to me that was the present day Goro who looked a bit off from the main series. Other then that the character sets worked fine.
Sound
The sound didn't stand out as much for me and didn't provide anything too new or outstanding.
Voice acting
All the original voices are brought back to fill the roles of the old cast. I was glad that they didn't choose new voices actors and made it feel legit. Sometimes this doesn't happen and really it just feels weird having another voice for ones that you have grown so use to. The new characters didn't have much presence and overall the only short coming is always the English. No matter what happens animes just can't ever find people that can speak fluid English.
OST
Nothing out of the ordinary the same sound effects and similar songs were used in the movie. It just works out how it should...
Story
The plot stayed true to the whatever was laid out in the main story. They didn't present a ridiculous side story or a filler episode where they go to the beach. I think this was very important since this entire arc was never really elaborated and for many it was necessary addition. The truth is they probably could of made an entire season on this arc if they wanted to, but I think it worked out much better in movie form. The only draw back is instead of seeing more baseball games you got a large amount of plot moving events and character development. It was good but at the same time I would of liked to see more actual baseball since that is what the anime is all about.
Character
Nothing new really. Goro is Goro and does whatever is needed to play his heart out. Other then that all the new characters were fairly standard. You had the I hate you teammate/ace who eventually caves. The little sister who becomes attracted to Goro. Then the rest who are their cause you need them to play the game. The old cast are seen in a few scenes but not much focus is really put on their lives aside from how they are effected with Goro gone. So really the focus is on building Goro and showing his growth.
Value and Enjoyment
The movie didn't have a message, but it didn't differ too much from any other major season. I still felt that the message was done much better aside from perhaps the first season. I'm not sure if I would ever rewatch this movie... it is a toss up, although the truth is I never really rewatch anything unless it is to show other people. I did enjoyed this movie quite a bit and found that it gave me more interest in the series again. Hopefully season 5 does the same as well and perhaps season 6 will be even better? Well heres to hoping and if you decide to watch this I hope you enjoy it as well.
