Six thousand years before Sora and Shiro were even a blink in the history of Disboard, war consumed the land, tearing apart the heavens, destroying stars, and even threatening to wipe out the human race. Forget watching the series, just watch this. This is good enough to be a Studio Ghibli product. The story is rich and complex and the characters come across very realistically.

An anti-war, post-apocalyptic, pre-upotian robot/human romance prequel. It's even better than the main series, but also much more serious in tone, so it might not be what many viewers expect.
Animation, direction, music and voice acting are all stellar, and the story was moving in a number of ways. The tie-ins to the main series are subtle and the movie would probably be enjoyable for those unfamiliar with the franchise as well.
Personally, the anti-violence stance it takes really struck a cord with me. Quote: "The heart gains nothing from a victory where violence is a principle."
But what will keep you watching are the juxtapositions of despair/hope and loneliness/love so clearly evident in the relationship of the two protagonists. They so dramatically change each other's lives, and those of the people around them, for the better, it's simply beautiful. Go watch it.

I wound up giving this one a ten (very rare). It's absolutely stunning, both in visuals and in usage of plot. The origin story of NGNL, told with an absolutely brilliant usage of visuals to define both the scale of the tragedy and the sharpness of the beauty. The plot elements themselves may feel just a bit cliche at times, but that's entirely forgivable when it's just written and executed so well. It may sound a little too grandiose to say, but this movie shows a mark of quality that's extremely rare in anime, movies or otherwise. The TV series was excellent, and this movie stands solidly atop that. Must see, just because it's that good.
