Ten year old Chie is "the most unfortunate girl in Japan", who manages her family diner while her unemployed yakuza father and her mother are separated. This sounds really depressing, but it's actually a very funny comedy.

The story is set in Osaka. After the success of the movie, a TV series was made, and Takahata Isao worked as the chief director.

Both shows is are slice of life starring a ca. 10 year old bratty child living under lower middle class conditions. Both fathers are flawed, lightheaded men wasting their life drinking and gambling, respectively while neglecting their family duties. Both have a supernatural element, Hanada Ichiro interacts with ghosts and Chie with her intelligent cat. Both kids take responsibilities far beyond their age and pay group, Ichiro fixes problems for the ghosts and Chie almost single-handedly runs the family restaurant business. Both kids are outspoken brats but with a heart of gold, positive attitude and love for their family despite all their imperfections. Both take place at an unspecified time during the Shouwa period, probably the 1960s or 1970s.

Chie's parents are separated and she lives with her father taking care of him. She misses her mother and sees her in secret. She goes to school where she is ashamed of her idiotic father.

Add to that a little fantastical element - Her cat that is almost human like in thinking and talks satirically (though the humans don't understand). And other side characters who have problems of their own.

Basically its a simple slice of life family drama. Its never too serious and there is lots of love.

Awesome movie! Funny slice of life with lovable characters. I especially like the setting(which happen often :D) and Chie with her unique tomboyish Kansai-ben voice.

As expected of Takahata Isao, a masterpiece imo; sprinkled with black humor for good measure.
