Alert: another anime with an abrupt, incomplete non-ending.
A fine, underrated series, clearly a major inspiration for Hajime no Ippo (especially Takamura Mamoru). Nevertheless, this series is NOT a typical shounen sports anime and, if that's all you're looking for, you will probably be disappointed.
Turns out sumo is a lot more than a buncha fat guys in a ring. There are moves, strategies, and ritual, and social repercussions for everything.
If you are interested in the nuances of Japanese social mores, this is one of the best series out there, along with Oishinbo and Hyouge Mono.
If anything, this series is vaguely similar to Akagi in that it depicts the roots of genius as begotten of uncompromising self-knowledge.
Highly recommended for those interested in understanding Japanese aesthetics, Japanese tradition, and what it really means to be strong.
Too bad the creators weren't able to finish this properly.
