A bit strange to be writing a review for yaoi, since I am not commonly watching it. But to the point.
Kaze to Ki no Uta is definitely a classics of the genre, which I would personally attribute to shonen ai, rather than yaoi, since although sexual scenes do occur they are more homoerotic rather than pornographic in nature.
Animation is pretty good too, if, again, you like girl-like boys - do take into consideration that this movie is 20 years old by now and yet some imagery could be used as a good artistic still.
Quite a bit from dementia here too both visually and in the plot.
The whole thing does have a strong melodramatic flavour, common for shonen ai (which in one place actually made me laugh a bit).
Characters, is probably the best thing about it – memorable, individual, at times quite predictable, but not less charming because of it. Most surly they would remind you of Oscar Wilde’s works and the works by novelists, writing a bit before his time.
This atmosphere of 18th century novel is more reinforced by beautiful classical music (not forgetting the setting and the clothes of characters too).
It surly is a memorable work, succeeding in my opinion, to get away from the “dirty” and plain homosexual flick (although we do see predictable development) to a little sensual novel about human relationship in the first place, about different people with their pains and joys with their different worlds… Based on manga, it only covers a part of it and we can clearly see many parts, where the plot could flow further, expand, but it does not hurt the anime itself. Furthermore, treatment of homosexuality is only one of the problems, depicted, numerous other ones, like power struggle, “impure blood”, acceptance, domination, trust are either portrayed fully, or just slightly hinted and touched upon…
All in all, I do realize, that the ratings that I put here are somewhat exaggerated, I still am keeping them this way, due to:
Good music, memorable characters, good animation for its time, interesting and immersive atmosphere, touch of classical novel, great classical music and just because it is yaoi/shonen ai and it still worth the time to watch and to obtain, for someone not being into this specific genre.
Hope you would like it – better not leave this book on the shelf.
