We represent and promote more than 13,000 legal professionals, increase community understanding of the law, help protect the rights of individuals and advise the community about the many benefits solicitors can provide. Queensland Law Society assists legal practitioners to continually improve their services, while monitoring their practices to ensure they meet the high standards set for the profession in Queensland. And we assist the public by advising government on improvements to laws affecting Queenslanders, and working to improve their access to the law. We hold specific statutory responsibilities, including the issuing of practising certificates, maintaining solicitors’ records, regulating the operation of solicitors' trust accounts and protecting the public. Queensland Law Society is incorporated under the Legal Profession Act 2007, and is governed by a council elected by our members.

We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader to step into the role of Finance and Risk Committee Chair. This is a pivotal opportunity to guide QLS’s financial and risk management strategy, ensuring compliance with key governance frameworks, including the Finance and Risk Committee Charter, Financial Accountability Act 2009, and Financial and Performance Management Standard 2009. Key Responsibilities: - Committee responsibilities in the preparation, consultation and leadership of FRC meetings and annual self-assessment of the FRC. - Promoting a Committee culture that is characterised by the highest levels of integrity, accountability and honesty with open, candid and timely information and a constant lens for industry best practice and continual improvement. - Sharing and demonstrating insights and perspectives that enhance financial literacy and strengthen risk management practices. - Strong internal and external stakeholder management. - Providing independent advice and counsel to key stakeholders to ensure adherence to statutory obligations as well as oversight of investment strategy and performance. Who Should Apply? We seek an independent, progressive qualified accountant (CA or CPA), ideally with experience at leading a Board or Finance and Risk Committee and possessing a deep understanding of statutory financial reporting requirements and investment strategies, especially within statutory, regulated or membership organisations. The ideal candidate will be an innovative, forward thinking and collaborative leader, with the ability to foster trust and integrity within and outside a committee environment and who can consistently bring fresh new perspectives to the organisation. I had the honour of speaking today at the welcome ceremony to celebrate the appointment of the Hon Justice Thomas Bradley as a Judge of Appeal, and His Honour Judge Paul Smith AM as a Justice of the Supreme Court. Both Justice Bradley and Judge Smith AM are highly respected members of the legal profession who have devoted their professional lives to service of our community. Their appointments have been warmly celebrated by the profession. It was an honour to address the Court alongside Attorney General the Hon Deb Frecklington MP GAICD and President of the Bar Association of Queensland Cate Heyworth-Smith QC.

Mark Fenlon is an Acting Practice Manager for the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, a sessional lecturer at James Cook University as well as being a chair or member of a number of committees including the QLS Wellbeing Working Group and Co-Chair of the Law Council of Australia’s RRR Committee. Prior to his current role, Mark was a Senior Prosecutor for the QPS for 14 years. He was the prosecutor for the murder committal which resulted in the implementation of Mason’s Law, and in 2015 he was awarded the Executive Director’s Certificate for the management and prosecution of 24 drug traffickers. With just a snapshot of his achievements above and his passion in promoting the interests of regional, rural and remote practitioners - Mark was certainly deserving of the 2024 Queensland Law Society Excellence in Law Awards Regional Practitioner of the Year Award.
