The Australian banks strong push for going cashless has been met with a backlash and a push from cash advocates. While there are pros and cons to each argument, going cashless is a slowly rising trend, with several countries pushing. There are two major groups (and others of course) that may find themselves left out: the elderly generation and the under-banked. There aren't many options out there for the under-banked in Australia, but this could create a market for this segment. Another considerable sized group, is merchants. Some still heavily rely on cash as the main method to accept payments, mainly to transaction processing fees of card payments. These fees take a bite out of their profit, which some may select to pass on to the consumers, making them less competitive. The push for cashless started with Macquarie Bank, later followed by Bank West. Now the big 4 ( CBA, WPC, NAB, AMZ) are getting behind the move. https://lnkd.in/dFhb_jnd

As we continue to think about how we can further digital payments in the country, the BSP is currently looking at a number of ways to increase adoption and remove potential barriers to entry. One way is to continue to continue to drive down costs to the end users. First, by removing the costs for micro-payments, which is defined as php500 and below, covering both consumers and merchants. In fact, the BSP is taking it a step further by removing fees for person-to-person transactions for as much as 10 transactions a week. This would encourage individual users to open accounts outside of a closed loop, since the cost to transact will not be an issue. Hence, people will stop asking “may GCASH ka ba?” each time they need to pay someone. Second, the BSP is proposing to create strategic payment use cases, which again has to be subsidized by Payment Service Provider to ensure no cost to the user. One example is the use of digital payment for transportation. Now whether QR PH is the right solution for this, or perhaps an NFC-supported fare collection system (like Octopus in HK), is still debateable. Third, is the pursuit of initiatives to further reduce cheques by introducing a solution for recurring low value payments. Direct Debits for payments to property developers and utilities is currently being explored by the payments community, as a replacement for warehoused cheques and closed loop auto-debit arrangements. While all of the above will help, there may be other ways we can further digital payments in the country by looking at key industries and identify any nuances that need to be addressed in digitizing payments within each ecosystem. I believe it is worthwhile to look at each industry and arrive at some strategic recommendations. Interested to look at the following - IT-BPM, Shipping and Logistics, Pharmaceutical and Healthcare, FMCG, Consumer Brands/Retail/Services, and of course the “New Economy” to determine any specific asks for to eliminate cash and cheques, and reduce costs of payments and collections. The question to ask here is - how can digital payments help grow and sustain the key industries of the Philippine economy? #digitalpayments #keyindustries

It’s official! The first OCR cut in 4 years. The RBNZ has made the bold move of moving the cash rate lower while inflation is stil outside the target band of 1-3%. Their commentary seems to suggest the economy is moving in the right direction, with business pricing intentions indicating stable low inflation in the short to mid term. Will this be the first of a series of rate cuts or will the reserve bank take a wait and watch approach at the next OCR review? Either way, the wholesale markets are abuzz with activity, optimisticly pricing in further cuts indicating we can reasonably expect to see more retail interest rate cuts from NZ banks in coming months. If you’re a first home buyer or looking for your next property purchase, time may be running out for you to take advantage of this goldilocks market. As interest rates drop, buyers that were previously priced out of the market may become active again, driving up demand. NAB Online Retail Sales Index: April 2024 Online retail sales growth accelerated in April, after being close to flat in March. By NAB Group Economics On a month-on-month, seasonally adjusted basis, growth accelerated in April (1.3%), following an unrevised March (0.3%). Growth also accelerated in year-on-year terms (16.4% y/y), partly boosted by base effects of key categories. Broad growth recorded by category in April, with the exception of takeaway food, and personal and recreational goods. A return to growth for the largest sales category, homewares and appliances, contributed strongly to the headline, along with department stores.  NAB estimates that in the 12 months to April, Australians spent $57.14 billion on online retail NAB Chief Economist, Alan Oster commented: In month on month, seasonally adjusted terms, online retail sales growth accelerated in April, after being close to flat in March. The result is again somewhat in line with our broader retail series, which returned to growth after contracting in March. Having said that, the performance of online retail over the past few months has outpaced broader retail, leading to the continued increase in the online share. The results for food and beverage related goods are also worth highlighting. This is the second consecutive month where takeaway food has contracted, and the category has been relatively subdued since the start of the year. This is in contrast to growth in the online grocery and liquor category, which has outpaced it. This may suggest consumers are becoming more focussed on budget saving measures. While it is difficult to firmly say whether there is a preference shift underway between these categories, if this trend continues, and monthly movements begin to shift the annual result, then this explanation becomes more likely.

The Reserve Bank of Australia has commenced a review of merchant card payment costs and surcharging. We have published an issues paper inviting stakeholders to provide feedback. Australians extensively use cards to pay for goods and services. They benefit from the convenience and security provided by card payments. However, in an environment of heightened concern around the cost of living, card payment costs and surcharging are attracting more attention from merchants and consumers. These issues are linked, since merchants would be less likely to surcharge consumers if card payment costs were lower. It is timely, therefore, to review whether regulatory settings could be adjusted to put further downward pressure on merchant card payment costs and whether the RBA’s surcharging framework remains fit for purpose. This recognises that many years have passed since these rules first came into effect. Stakeholders can provide written submissions by 3 December 2024. Yesterday you may have seen the final report from the Commerce Commission and the announcements from Minister Willis and Minister Bayly about implementing their recommendations. We welcome these announcements and fully agree that strong, genuine competition is needed in the New Zealand retail banking market.  However, we challenge the focus on Kiwibank as the main remedy to this. Outside of the largest five players, TSB is poised to disrupt the market, but we are hamstrung by regulations that entrench the dominant position of Australian owned banks rather than creating a competitive market. TSB provide alternatives and competition in the market but are faced with the same regulatory requirements without the scale to absorb them. TSB believes banking regulations should have a stronger focus on creating a level playing field, with proportionality baked in, while still ensuring customers are protected. It’s crucial for New Zealanders who want a competitive banking market that policymakers get these settings right, and we look forward to continuing to engage with the Government on this.
