Jumped on the panel of Australian HR Institute (AHRI) NSW state conference with Justine Cooper FCIPD FCPHR, Dr Philip Gibbs and Rhonda Brighton-Hall FCPHR to discuss Generative AI in the HR industry. "You cant spell AHRI without 'AI'..." Well, there was a full room of HR professionals, trainers, consultants and software providers talking about lots of topics. When it came to us, the room turned to the question of 'How is Gen AI relevant to the HR profession'. There are two streams to this question: 1. As a tool, it clearly offers productivity improvements. All (100%!) of the room put their hands up when asked if they've used ChatGPT for their work. This contrasts with the no-one (0%!) put their hand up when asked if they were effectively using Workforce planning systems. (David Burrows?!). What should the room use the tool for? Knowledge management (policies discovery), writing / reading CVs, etc. Some of these have ethical considerations, but most require just common sense. Gen AI is not making decisions, it is not discriminating, it is speeding up your work, that you put your name behind. Based on hands, no-one (0%) had their organisations ban ChatGPT. 2. What should the HR profession do to prepare their workforce for the coming of Gen AI. I feel like we didn't get enough time on this much bigger strategic question, but the impact is clearly going to be felt in both the new set of skills we are going to need (The future of work gets a makeover) and the strategic impact that its likely to involve across jobs and business strategy. The very role of 'human capital', a reasoning system that is moving information around and making judgements, taking responsibility, will change itself. Very few understand this completely, but its certainly coming. A number of questions came through, perhaps the most challenging for me was the opening: 'What is AI'. a simple question, hard to answer for this audience. I've put my answer into the notes below, as well as some links to webinars for HR professionals. I’m still thinking about what went on behind these yellow doors last week. It was the Gold Coast Australian HR Institute (AHRI) chapter talking about harnessing the power of AI in HR. What got me thinking the most, is the potential for two-speed cultures in the modern workforce; those who harness AI to supercharge productivity and those who don’t (yet) <- there’s my undying commitment to my growth mindset! For HR, this is a pivotal moment. How do we ensure that as technology accelerates, people don’t get left behind? Equity and fairness must always be at the core of our strategies. It’s about leveling the playing field, providing the right training, and upskilling opportunities so everyone can thrive. But there’s so much more. Are your performance appraisals relative? What about position descriptions and work design? Does your reward and recognition program work under these conditions? Beyond that, empathy and engagement have to be key. We need to lead through this change, helping that AI is not seen as a threat but as a tool for the modern workforce. After all, we don’t just build businesses—we build communities where people and purpose drive progress. PwC has been making predictions about #AI for years. This is so amazing. What a fantastic program DXC Technology. Congrats on 10 years for the #DXCDandelionProgram. These incredibly talented individuals, who just happen to have a different brain, beautifully explain some of the really simple and human needs they have in the workplace. I think what is super important to point out, is the way that they internalise "not good enough" or "not talented enough". This is the heartbreaking reality for a lot of people who are neurodivergent. Taking a brain-friendly approach to all your employees by understanding what they need to be successful, is the most human thing you can do. #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #brainfriendly #leadership #inclusion #diversity #dei #wellbeing

Not a bad spot for a conference today at SAP HR Connect Sydney! The event brought together some great speakers but my highlights were Lee Yearsley from Akin and Leigh Sales, who truly shined. Here are a few of the key takeaways: 💡 Lee who has founded the for purpose tech firm, Akin, broke AI down for us and gave us a lot of food for thought. I particularly liked her quote “Tackling the work that people don’t find meaningful is a good thing." She highlighted how AI can be trained to reduce bias, unlike human decision-making, stating, "Human data is messy." 👩‍💼 Leigh Sales, with over 30 years as a journalist had some great thoughts on leadership: "A great leader is someone who can carry people with them and build consensus, but some of the best leaders are just regular people who have stepped up and become a leader through circumstance." 🚀 The integration of AI into everyday workflows was front and center. Quick action APIs that keep users in the flow of work without jumping between systems is critical. Start wide and then go deep was some sage advice again from Lee. Panels also addressed the importance of AI in workforce planning and job design, which has been reduced from 6 weeks to just 3 hours in some cases according to Dr Isabeau Korpel (PhD, MEd, PCC). This highlights the growing need for an adaptive, skills-based approach to HR practices. Finally, the challenge of skilling in the AI era is huge: “AI probably won’t take your job," said Pip Dexter, "but a human who knows how to use AI will." The hardest part? A unified skills taxonomy to address evolving workforce needs. A great day out and fantastic as always to catch up with some familiar faces in person!
