Today is Growth Awareness Day – a day dedicated to raising awareness of growth hormone deficiency, a rare condition that affects 2-3 per 10,000 people in Australia. With more than 40% of children with growth disorder remaining undiagnosed, it reaffirms our responsibility to raise greater awareness of this condition. Growth Awareness Day is more than just about height. It is about understanding a child's overall health and wellbeing. Early detection can make a significant difference in a child's life, and raising awareness helps parents learn how to effectively monitor their child's growth. For more than 30 years, the Novo Nordisk Rare Disease team has been committed to supporting children with growth-related disorder. As I pause to reflect on this World AIDS day, my first thoughts are for those we lost too early in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Today is also a good time to celebrate the incredible progress achieved by science in the past decades. Someone diagnosed with HIV today can expect to live a long, healthy and fulfilling life, just like someone living without the virus. Furthermore, U=U means that people with HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load through antiretroviral therapy (ART) cannot transmit HIV to others through sex. Today, we must also face the reality that our work is far from complete. Sadly, according to the latest data from Public Health, Canada has seen a 35% increase in new HIV diagnoses in 2023. As the only G7 country that is stepping backward, we can and must do better. We have all the tools needed in Canada to end this epidemic. We must go the extra mile to reach populations that have been left behind, a one-size approach will not work…Lastly, combatting societal and self-imposed stigma should remain a priority. We must join forces, public and private sectors, led by the various communities impacted by HIV. Working together, we can achieve our common objective of ending the epidemic. As for me and ViiV Healthcare Canada, I/WE renew our commitment to walking side by side with the communities that are disproportionately impacted by HIV, and fiercely advocate for their unmet needs, until HIV/AIDS is not…

Why is there presently a rental crisis in Australia? Hi everyone, Happy Friday! Mike Fanene here with my weekly post. Our daughter Sam, her husband Orwayne and our beautiful granddaughter Sierra are currently building a house in Clementine, a suburb in the Upper Swan Valley. They will take ownership and move hopefully in August. They shifted back in with us 18 months ago, after the landlords of their rental property, they were living in, sold and they had to relocate. They tried for months to get another rental; however, they just couldn’t get one. It’s great that they are getting all the government benefits for first home buyers, however it got me questioning why we are experiencing a rental crisis in Australia? Australia's population has been steadily increasing over the years, driven by both natural growth and immigration. This has resulted in increased demand for housing, including rental properties. Despite all the houses being built around Perth, there's a shortage of available rental properties, particularly in major cities. This shortage can be attributed to various reasons, including slow construction rates, lack of suitable land for development, and strict zoning regulations. Property prices in Australia, especially in major cities, have been rising steadily for many years. This makes it difficult for many people, especially younger generations, and low-income earners, to afford to buy a home, leading to increased demand for rental properties. Investment properties have been attractive to investors due to historically low interest rates and the potential for capital gains. However, this has led to an increase in competition among investors for rental properties, driving up prices and reducing availability for renters. Economic factors such as unemployment rates, wage stagnation, and underemployment can also contribute to the rental crisis by affecting people's ability to afford rent. The rise of short-term rental platforms like Airbnb has also had an impact on the rental market, reducing the supply of long-term rental properties as some landlords opt for short-term rentals, which can be more lucrative. Overall, these factors combined have created a challenging rental market in Australia, with high demand, limited supply, and rising rents, particularly in urban centers. Are you currently renting? On average, one woman is killed in Australia every 4 (four) days – an almost 30 per cent increase compared to the year before. The prime minister has declared violence against women a national crisis and even in the time it has taken me to write these words, two more women have been slain.  If you are an Australian woman, aged between 24 and 44 years of age, you are more likely to experience domestic violence than to suffer a health issue related to smoking, drinking or being overweight. These are grim statistics, and this is not a quick fix. But apathy has no place in this conversation. On Friday, May 24th, my colleagues and I partnered with #RizeUpAustralia and came together in solidarity with women experiencing domestic and family violence around our nation. We undertook training on how to spot the signs that someone may be experiencing coercive control and sexual or domestic abuse. We shared experiences, discussed suggestions on how to approach conversations, and our hopes for the future of women everywhere. Then we rolled up our sleeves: - creating hampers full to the brim with hundreds of donated items - assembling furniture for donation - raising much needed funds with an on-site BBQ - We even sent a small team of volunteers to participate in a life changing #teambuilding activity, setting up emergency accommodation with the #RizeUpAustralia team. If our actions make a difference in just one family’s life today, we believe we have taken steps towards making the world a better, safer place.  Being able to do so while living out the multiple attributes of kindness our Sandoz family embody, such as collaboration, empathy, humility, and compassion is the icing on the cake. What is IT? IT is the third part of our leadership excellence model (ME, US and IT). As we’ve already explored, ME is all about Truth; US is all about Trust; and this week, we will discover that IT is all about Traction. IT starts with asking ourselves a series of questions: WHERE is IT we are heading? WHAT is IT that we are building? WHY are we doing IT? WHEN are we doing IT? Once we are clear on the answers to these questions, we can lead our team to a successful outcome – often even more successful than you ever dreamed (more on this later)! In a team or organisation that isn’t clear on IT, productivity and engagement are low, people are overworked, underappreciated and rudderless. There may be an overload of initiatives with no clear idea of where you’re going or why, which will ultimately result in poor performance. It could be said that when IT isn’t clear, you’re operating in an ego system rather than an ecosystem. There’s a great quote from Michael Neill’s Supercoach that really resonates with me: “When creating becomes about WHAT you want to create and not about YOU, the game becomes a whole lot easier.” Stay tuned this week for practical advice on how to get clear on IT, and see performance skyrocket. Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay, and this year’s theme is #WorkplaceMentalHealth. So why are we offering our employees a #dayoff from the workplace? ☀ At Oceania #Takeda, our mentally healthy workplace program is called TakeCare, and we are proud to have the Mental Health First Aid Skilled Workplace Recognition. Over the past four weeks, between #RUOKDay and #WorldMentalHealthDay, we’ve invested in initiatives that grow and support our employees, teams, and organisational culture. These initiatives include job design and clarification, employee educational sessions, EAP review and active engagement with our 28 #MentalHealthFirstAiders. Our focus on mental health reminds us to #connect with loved ones, community, colleagues, and support if needed—and most importantly, with ourselves for good mental health. We have created many moments to boost workplace #connections, including lunchtime walks (even in the rain! 🌦) and our office favourite, ice cream! 🍦 To wrap up the month, we are giving our employees a #dayoff to recharge and do something positive for themselves. 🌟 2024: A Year of Challenges, Risks, and Growth 🌟 This year has been nothing short of transformative. It started with the incredible privilege of becoming an Australian citizen, adding to my Argentinian and Italian nationalities. But then came a moment of profound decision: leaving behind a country I love and the life I had built in Australia to pursue personal and career growth in Europe. Moving to the heart of pharma and biotech research was a huge risk, filled with uncertainty and no guarantees. Back in May, the path ahead was unclear. There were fears, doubts, and countless "what ifs." But I took the leap. And today, as 2024 draws to a close, I can look back with pride: ✔️ I’ve secured business contracts that set a solid foundation for success. ✔️ I’ve built strong networks and partnerships in Europe’s thriving life sciences sector. ✔️ 2025 is shaping up to be incredibly prosperous. Was it easy? Not at all. My weeks are packed with long hours, navigating meetings across Australia, Europe, and US time zones. But every late night and early morning has been worth it. This journey has taught me a powerful lesson: the risks you’re afraid to take might just be the ones that change your life. Mental Health Day Psychiatry Region Zealand, Health Innovation Region Zealand @FIERS - Life Science Innovation DK(Region Zealand's Foundation for Health Innovation) focused on cooperation and collaboration and invited for the first Mental Health Innovation Day yesterday. A day focused on exploring the many possibilities, which the companies' innovative solutions can bring to Psychiatry's specific needs. Kresten Dørup spoke about how psychiatry will look in 2030. Then there was a great panel debate: How do we bring Innovation into Psychiatry in Denmark? The debate was with Zacharias Obel, User representative from the User and relatives panel Søren Bredkjær, Martin Lohse and my colleague Jesper Lindahl from Takeda Pharma talking about how to clarify the importance of cross-functional collaboration and which opportunities and barriers, there is, in order to create the best framework and conditions for future collaborations between Psychiatry and companies/startups. "Great teams aren’t built on easy victories—they’re forged in moments of shared challenge and purpose.” I was recently reminded of the line from Shakespeare’s Henry V: “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers…” It’s a tribute to the bonds formed when people come together to achieve something difficult. It resonates deeply for anyone who has worked in teams facing tight deadlines, tough markets, or ambitious goals. For me, this quote speaks to: 1️⃣ The Strength of Small Teams: You don’t need numbers to win. A close-knit, aligned group can overcome incredible odds. 2️⃣ Shared Struggle Builds Trust: The hardest projects I’ve worked on were the ones that built the strongest relationships. 3️⃣ Pride in Purpose: It’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about feeling a sense of belonging and accomplishment with those who shared the journey. In leadership, it’s a reminder to focus not just on the results, but on the shared experience that bonds the team. Those are the moments people will carry with them long after the work is done. I had the opportunity this week to work with a team of leaders who I had worked with previously, in a different capacity. It was really inspirational to see how they had continued to develop into a high performing leadership team and had really grown their trust and vulnerability with each other. We reviewed their DISC profiles and they showed their vulnerability by telling each other what value they thought the others brought to the team, in terms of their strengths and in terms of their development areas. Some really great insights! We followed up by communicating to the wider team their combined DISC leadership style - which is a high SI (Steady, Influential). A high SI team: 1. Creates a positive, supportive and engaging work environment. 2. Builds strong relationships. 3. Fosters cohesion and maintains stability while motivating their team. A really great example that all DISC styles make great leaders and understanding the combined style can help leaders (and their teams) know their strengths and their areas for further development.
