One of the most frustrating things about being in the services space is that larger organizations and especially government still use metrics that effectively proxy scale as a metric when shortlisting gets challenging. We had another round this week after pulling a couple of other NZ based businesses together to bid on an NZ govt opportunity - "I had a call from the procurement person to thank us for our response. They said they had a large number of responses and although they could see our Consortium has the capability, the shortlisted vendors have more experience with projects of this nature and size. " Experience very quickly becomes a metric that goes up faster with scale since the business as a whole has done more projects even if the team that will be engaged will always have only a subset of that experience. It further reinforces the chicken and egg problem for businesses trying to grow. I'm not calling out the specific govt department because the issue is systemic rather than this or that procurement. To my mind experience and scale should be treated more like a precondition of "is the business able to deliver" and then differentiation should be on quality and cost-effectiveness of the solution. I'm sure my network has hundreds of stories like this - it's incredibly frustrating. I've spent many hours badgering government officials and it feels like some of the progress we had is going backwards as funding tightens up(despite a preference for large business bids leading to higher total costs in the long run). What do we do about it?

I discover new method of file sharing, but it has become paid. It is by using the NZB files, NZB search index is paid, Meaning you have to pay a vendor for searching NZB files Also you have to buy service for using server to transfer the media. https://lnkd.in/dvWS3nbb But it is fast method and longer retention of content is assured. You can store and download content upto terabytes , depending on how much you can pay. It is not very costly. In early days these may have been free. Also , while torrents can be blocked by ISP, This method cannot be blocked , at it is probably smaller text files that are combined to form and complete binary file.

All over the globe, governments recognize the AI arms race is on. Specifically there's a growing conversation about the long term economic and security importance of developing "sovereign artificial intelligence (AI)". In Australia there is a lag in AI research and development. Here's a thought-provoking question: Should Australia invest taxpayer dollars into solar panel manufacturing, or should we focus on cultivating an industry capable of powering the manufacturing of intelligence for the 4th Industrial Revolution? A report from the CSIRO highlights that Australia is behind in creating foundational AI models, such as those used by OpenAI's ChatGPT, with the majority being developed overseas. This gap could affect Australia's ability to use AI to boost productivity and strengthen the economy. Professor Anton van den Hengel from the University of Adelaide points out that AI could significantly enhance efficiency in industries, a process that could span the next two decades. He emphasizes the importance of sovereign AI in capitalizing on economic opportunities that AI can provide, including applications not yet imagined. The issue also extends to education and infrastructure. For instance, using AI models developed abroad might compromise Australian values or priorities and could pose security and cultural risks. The Australian Government has introduced Ministerial Direction 111 (MD111), replacing MD107, to streamline offshore student visa processing. Priority 1 (High) applies to providers who have not reached the enrolment threshold as tracked in PRISMS, ensuring faster processing. Once a provider meets the threshold, applications shift to Priority 2 (Standard), which may see slower processing times. Anyone else doing side eye looking at this article this morning? https://lnkd.in/g6sK6wRD "Tech experts" attribute system problems to: - not enough money (you can see from the UI that they've thrown heaps of money at it, but apparently not at the right things) - not enough server capacity (no mention of the setup being so inefficient that capacity won't help?) - the time it takes to provision more capacity (there were dinosaurs walking the planet when this thinking made sense) None of these "expert" explanations make sense when Cloud Computing and NoSQL have been available as commodities for over a decade. From parliament to tech to media, this article raises uncomfortable competence questions.

Next up we have the crazy and always hilarious Paul McCarty. Paul will he presenting "Repo Swatting: How to delete anyone's source code repository anonymously". Paul will discuss a new attack called Repo Swatting identified in major SCM providers including GitHub, GitLab, and Gitea. He identified the attack and theorized that it could be weaponized to take developer resources offline. He was correct. Swatting is a terrible practice as it allows malicious attackers to target unsuspecting, innocent people by using law enforcement as a directed weapon.
