We’re an EU public-private partnership funding health research & innovation. We also manage IMI projects.
About us
The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) aims to translate health research and innovation into real benefits for patients and society, and ensure that Europe remains at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary, sustainable, patient-centric health research. Health research and care increasingly involve diverse sectors. By supporting projects that bring these sectors together, IHI will pave the way for a more integrated approach to health care, covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and disease management. IHI is a partnership between the European Union and European industry associations representing the pharmaceutical, medical technology, biotechnology, digital health and vaccine industries, namely COCIR, EFPIA (including Vaccines Europe), EuropaBio, and MedTech Europe. IHI’s total budget is EUR 2.4 billion. Half of this comes from Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme. The IHI industry partners have committed EUR 1 billion to IHI, and a further EUR 200 million can be committed by other organisations that decide to become Contributing Partners. IHI builds on the successes of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), which ran from 2008 to 2021. The IHI Programme Office continues to manage and promote projects launched under IMI. 🩸 Screening for Type 1 diabetes is essential to avoid severe complications arising from untreated diabetes that can be fatal. ⚡ The EDENT1FI project and the Italian national government are rolling out parallel screening programmes for this disease in the general population, and they're sharing best practices and learnings. ☑️ To date, the Italian government has used EDENT1FI's master protocol and capillary tests, while EDENT1FI can make use of data collected through the nation-wide screening to improve its studies. 🤝 Working together, they can achieve better results faster 💪 Read more: https://europa.eu/!pXcbQK #IHITransformingHealth #DiabetesResearch #T1D #EUResearch #HorizonEU chantal mathieu Jurgen Vercauteren

🐭 Is there an animal-methods bias in the #HealthResearch space? 🙌 High five to VICT3R for being featured in this interesting Nature Portfolio article for their work on Virtual Control Groups and how this can reduce the number of animals needed for research. 📚 Read it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eeQknT8G #3Rs #NAMS #IHITransformingHealth #EUResearch
Are We Stuck in Old Research Habits? A new Nature Portfolio article takes a closer look at something many scientists have faced - the pressure to use animal models, even when other approaches might work just as well (or better!). Some researchers feel they need to include animal studies just to get published or funded, which raises an important question: Are we always choosing the best research methods, or just the ones we’re used to? The article highlights #VICT3R as one of the projects actively working on solutions to reduce unnecessary animal use in research. Instead of repeating animal studies, we’re using Virtual Control Groups (VCGs) - pulling data from past research to improve toxicology assessments. Great to see Mathieu Vinken featured for his contributions in this space! As a partner in VICT3R and coordinator of the ONTOX project and the #ASPIScluster, he is helping drive change toward the wider adoption of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). Change is happening, but there’s still work to do. How do we ensure that innovative approaches like NAMs become the new standard in research? It's #ThrowbackThursday! For today's #TBT, we're looking back to March 2024, and the Alzheimer's Disease Data Initiative special symposium at AD/PD 🌟 The symposium was entitled "Bridging a gap: how several key efforts are making their samples & data available to the broader research community". Moderated by Phyllis Ferrell of the Davos Alzheimer's Collaborative, the session featured 5 fantastic speakers from global and European initiatives that are collecting, generating and sharing data & samples of key importance to the #Alzheimer’s and #dementias community - Miia Kivipelto, Rhoda Au, Simon Lovestone, Jean Manson and EPND co-Lead, Phil Scordis 👏 During the symposium, Phil explained how EPND is building on existing initiatives and experiences to create a scalable, sustainable infrastructure for data and sample sharing: the EPND Hub. “We understand the value of gaining access to data and samples. But we also recognise that there are complex legal, ethical and data security challenges to navigate,” he said. “We’re bringing the lessons we’ve learned about data and sample sharing and using this knowledge to facilitate the journey for the research community.” Discover the insights shared at the Symposium ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eNfznyVj Access the EPND Hub and explore metadata on over 90 studies, 100 datasets and 30 biosample collections ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eGcTnUyt Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) EFPIA - European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations European Commission

🖋️ Sign up today to join the Gravitate-Health Open E2E electronic product information #ePI Community! The goal is to: 🔎 drive progress; 🔎 advance ePI standards & content creation by means of “end-to-end” ePI dataflow; 🔎 transform access to health information both for patients and research and innovation; 🔎 adopt and use ePI as outlined in the EU Pharmaceutical Legislation; 🔎 become a catalyst for change. 👇 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ea6qDWSY
🤗 This week, the new Gravitate Health E2E ePI Community was presented at #DIAEurope2025 in Basel. The session on #patient #centricity and #eP, with Anne Moen, Kate Porch and Koen Nauwelaerts, and organised under the Regulatory Operation track of DIA, was a success! Gravitate-Health have been instrumental to create vibrant #multi-stakeholder #community that is paving the way for broader uptake and adoption, putting European Medicines Agency #ePI key principles to work in ways that ensures patient centricity at the heart of new digital health information solutions. From the discussion at #DIAEurope2025, we see that Gravitate-Health has been a catalyst to promote wider uptake and maturity of the #ePI #FHIR standards, and we are emphasising patients active contributions in #co-creation of solutions that improve access to understandable information for #safer use of #medicines. We have learned that the quality of the information resources is crucial, and if we get #standardisation and #harmonisation right, it may open up a lot of doors for dissemination downstream to and with patients and their support network.
