💡Insights from the bio.be Annual Event!  This afternoon, I attended the Bio.Be Annual Event, which focused on next-gen vaccines and our local footprint and position in the value chain. 👉 Here are my key takeaways: 1️⃣ 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐠𝐢𝐮𝐦’𝐬 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: Belgium ranks first globally in vaccine exports, even after the pandemic! 2️⃣ 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬: To continue facilitating clinical studies for vaccine development, we need more volunteers, especially to test prophylactic vaccines. 3️⃣ 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬: During crises or pandemics, we need to act 10x faster... and with 10x higher volumes. Preparation is crucial, but true readiness comes from strong partnerships. Trust is essential. 4️⃣ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭: As ecosystems and governments evolve, maintaining our role in the value chain requires a clear path forward that supports R&D. Interesting article by Beatrijs Van Liedekerke, General Manager of Quality at @Douglas CDMO CDMO, emphasising 3 key areas to evaluate: 1. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: Effective systems and Quality Management Processes (QMS) are essential. 2. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: A strong quality culture means every team member prioritises excellence. 3. Yesterday morning, we had another breakfast meeting at the office. This time we got a nice scientific update from our medical team. We also had an experience sharing from a colleague who is participating in our graduate program and who did his second rotation in Belgium. This breakfast meeting was a special one, as we asked our colleagues to participate at the so called "Warm Sweater Day" or "Ugly Christmas Sweater Day". 🌍 The motto of Warm Sweater Day is as follows: ‘The greenest energy is the energy you don’t use’. The concept is just as simple. Put on a cosy sweater to stay warm while the thermostat is reduced by one degree Celsius. 🏭 You may ask: what difference does this one degree make? Well, by turning your thermostat down by 1 degree Celsius, 6% of energy and 6% of CO2 emissions are saved. Per household annually approximately 255 kg can be reduced. This supports global efforts to combat climate change, making our planet healthier for future generations. So warm yourself, not the planet! And besides this, it's also fun to see the creativity of our colleagues. “Our hope is that with a validated device for use in narcolepsy, we can contribute to limiting the burden of traveling to a sleep center. Beyond the clinical trial setting, a validated Digital Health Tool could help to improve the diagnostic journey by allowing for a timely differential diagnosis for people living with narcolepsy.” So exciting to see this initiative to pair the development of a therapeutic innovation with digital innovation to add more value for patients living with narcolepsy.

As a result, there has been a significant shift towards continuous manufacturing (CM). Traditionally, tablets have been produced by batch processes, in which all ingredients are discharged in one unit operation. Production stops and material is removed after each processing step. In contrast, in a continuous process there are no discrete process steps and material is gradually moving through the different operating units. In spite of the increasing interest the pharmaceutical industry, CM is still new to many pharmaceutical companies. Much knowledge has been established on the role of raw material properties in batch processing, but this knowledge is not directly transferable to continuous processes. In order to enable the transition from batch production to continuous production, each processing step needs to be re-designed. The design of robust continuous processes requires a thorough understanding of the impact of material properties on each unit operation in a continuous manufacturing line. What have been the recent activities of The Beneluxa Initiative? The organisation’s website and the latest annual report of Belgium’s RIZIV-INAMI offer some insights.   In August, Beneluxa announced that Belgium and the Netherlands had completed a joint assessment of CSL Behring’s haemophilia B gene therapy Hemgenix (etranacogene dezaparvovec). Based on that evaluation, the Dutch National Health Care Institute (ZIN) recommended an outcomes-based agreement (OBA) of up to ten years’ duration  to the Minister of Health in the Netherlands (tinyurl.com/4nnwvews). More recently, Beneluxa has disclosed that, although joint pricing negotiations are “the preferred approach of both governments,” differences in healthcare systems can present challenges to this process. In the case of Hemgenix, “the financing of the current SoC, the factor IX products, is organised differently in both countries and therefore resulting in a different outcome of the recommendation for reimbursement. Therefore, the decision was made to proceed individually with the negotiations for Hemgenix.”   RIZIV-INAMI provides some detail on the general working of Beneluxa. The domain taskforces (DTFs) meet regularly—the one on HTA monthly, the one on pricing and reimbursement every six weeks—“to exchange information, share best practices and discuss strategies.” Twice yearly, the DTFs present the results of their work to the Beneluxa Initiative Steering Committee.   At the June 2023 Steering Committee meeting, representatives of the European Commission and Beneluxa’s Nordic counterparts were invited to attend. The DTF HTA drew up a list of four drugs that were considered to be potential candidates for joint evaluation.   The activities of the DTF Horizon Scanning have been temporarily scaled back because several members of Beneluxa are actively involved in the International Horizon Scanning Initiative. DTF Information Sharing has been working with PPRI on organising a joint webinar on pharmaceutical expectations in the field of Alzheimer's disease.   The Ministers of Health of member countries met at the EPSCO meeting in November 2023 to reaffirm the importance of Beneluxa. They also considered topics such as managed entry agreements, external reference pricing and collaboration with other stakeholders and partners.   At the December 2023 Steering Committee meeting, chairmanship of the organisation was transferred from Belgium to the Netherlands and Ireland was appointed as the first vice-chair. The meeting also discussed the creation of a Policy Working Group to maintain Beneluxa’s strategic position and explored opportunities such as (continued) cooperation in the field of Alzheimer's disease.   The June 2024 Steering Committee meeting included discussions on experiences with joint negotiations, strategic planning for Beneluxa’s future activities, and potential new collaborations. #Beneluxa #Belgium #Netherlands #drugpricing
