Discover this publication on guideline-directed medical therapy for heart failure, published in Acta Cardiologica and available as open access on Taylor & Francis Online. AstraZeneca was the funding source and was involved in all stages of the survey conduct and analysis.   The "Delphi Panel"—consisting of 12 Belgian heart failure specialists—achieved consensus on how to integrate GDMT in clinical practice, considering the local healthcare landscape and reimbursement criteria. 1. Researchers at KU Leuven and VIB Center for Brain and Disease Research have discovered defects in primary cilia in ALS patients, suggesting a new treatment approach. 2. ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a severe neurodegenerative disease with a life expectancy of two to five years post-diagnosis. 3. The study published in "Brain" highlights C21orf2 mutations as a potential cause of primary cilia dysfunction in ALS. 4. Mutations in C21orf2 impair the formation and structure of primary cilia, leading to fewer and abnormally short cilia in motor neurons from affected patients. 5. Disruption of the sonic hedgehog (Shh) pathway due to cilia damage affects motor neuron connections to muscles, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. 6. Restoring C21orf2 levels in mutated cells repaired cilia defects and restored Shh signaling, indicating a therapeutic target for ALS. 7. Similar cilia defects were observed in motor neurons from ALS patients with C9orf72 mutations, suggesting a broader cilia dysfunction issue in ALS. 8. The findings indicate that targeting primary cilia dysfunction may be a viable therapeutic strategy for ALS.

Exciting news! 🎆 We are happy to share the publication of the latest study by our colleague Eva Kimpe in Frontiers in Oncology! This model-based health economic evaluation examines the impact of late radiation-induced small bowel toxicity in rectal cancer survivors by comparing different radiotherapy techniques. 📈 The study highlights the societal cost of small bowel toxicity in this population 💶. With the use of health economic modeling techniques, Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT), Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy - Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IMRT/IGRT) were compared. 💡 The findings of the study reveal that advanced techniques, such as IMRT and IMRT/IGRT, substantially reduce the occurrence of small bowel toxicity events. This underscores the importance of considering late toxicity effects in health economic evaluations and decisions related to investments and reimbursement, demonstrating the potential for long-term cost savings and improved quality of life through the adoption of novel radiation techniques. Proud to announce Lieve Naesens, from the Rega Institute for Medical Research in collaboration with CD3 acquired substantial Open Philanthropy funding to prepare against influenza pandemics. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eXgT9P88   Already prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, L. Naesens joined forces with the Centre for Drug Design and Discovery (CD3) to develop #influenza virus inhibitors that are well-suited for #pandemic preparedness. This resulted in the discovery of a mechanistically novel class of influenza polymerase inhibitors. Based on already acquired insight in their target and binding mode, we are fine-tuning this compound class towards the right candidate compound which could enter clinical development against influenza. The Open Philanthropy funding was granted through the Pandemic Antiviral Discovery Initiative.
