Skylo to launch mobile to satellite service with MVNOs in Brazil next year At the Latin American Satellite Congress, in Rio de Janeiro yesterday, Skylo announced it would launch its Satellite direct-to-device (#D2D) in Brazil next year. The company has developed a technology that allows direct connection between smartphones with chipsets compatible with 3GPP release 17 and geostationary satellites that are already in orbit using the L or S bands. In Brazil, Skylo has a partnership with Viasat to use its satellites, and the authorization from Anatel to use the L band. In addition, Hugh Stevenson, Skylo's Business Development Director, revealed that Skylo has already reached partnerships with three mobile virtual network operators (#MVNO) to launch the service with an initial focus on the Internet of Things (#IoT) solutions market. Unlike Starlink or Kuiper, Skylo's service is not broadband, but narrowband. The idea is to serve for emergency communication, such as sending or receiving text messages, or sending location information; or for data traffic from IoT applications. The three main use cases are: 1) SOS service for the end consumer; 2) vehicle monitoring and telemetry; 3) IoT in heavy machinery located in remote areas. Latency ranges from 5 to 15 seconds. Since it uses the L and S satellite bands, Skylo does not depend on agreements with mobile operators. According to its director, the technology is agnostic to the type of satellite, and may also operate with those in low and medium orbits in the future. Its biggest challenge, however, is the lack of devices compatible with release 17. For now, the technology is restricted to top-of-the-line smartphones. In the US, Google's new Pixel models have the service. "Skylo's innovation is to take advantage of geostationary satellites," said Stevenson. The company already has partnerships for coverage and operations in more than 40 countries. First, it maps the field to identify how it has evolved throughout the years. Next, it draws on 30 official statements published by journalists and their tech partners, and seven semi-structured interviews with representatives from five websites. This article shows an emerging automation landscape in the Brazilian fact-checking venture supported by the tech industry. Advancing Direct-to-Device (D2D) Communications The telecommunications landscape is evolving rapidly, with satellite communications playing a pivotal role in enhancing global connectivity. Direct-to-device (D2D) communications, which enable devices to connect directly to satellite networks without intermediary ground stations, represent a significant advancement in this domain. The Global Satellite Operators Association (GSOA) is at the forefront of this development, working closely with the GSM Association (GSMA) to explore the best ways to integrate satellite and terrestrial networks. Current Developments in D2D Communications The integration of satellites into terrestrial networks has been progressing steadily, with significant strides in developing standards for non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). With 3GPP Release 17, NTNs now support 5G and IoT services, marking a major evolution. The focus is shifting towards fully integrating satellites into the 6G framework, which promises to bring unprecedented levels of ubiquity, continuity, scalability, and resilience to global connectivity. WRC-27 Agenda Items The World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27) will address several critical agenda items that will shape the future of D2D communications: Agenda Item 1.12: This item focuses on considering additional spectrum allocations for Mobile Satellite Service (MSS), which is crucial for the growth of satellite communications. Agenda Item 1.13: This involves studying the use of terrestrial spectrum (IMT bands) for D2D communications. This approach leverages existing mobile handsets and requires partnerships with mobile network operators (MNOs). Agenda Item 1.14: Similar to 1.12, this item will also look at additional MSS spectrum allocations, emphasizing the need for more bandwidth to support the growing demand for satellite services. GSOA and GSMA Cooperation Collaboration is key to the successful integration of satellite and terrestrial networks. GSOA has signed cooperation agreements with GSMA and the European Space Agency (ESA) to advance this integration. 🦾#TechRoundup: Starlink is top satellite internet provider in Brazil Last week, Brazil’s telecommunications regulator, Anatel, launched a public consultation to discuss whether Starlink should be allowed to expand its reach to another 7,500 satellites. State of play. The authorization granted to Starlink in 2022 covers 4,408 satellites and runs through 2027. The new request refers to the second generation of the company’s low-orbit satellite constellation. I’m thrilled to share that SES Satellites has been awarded a multi-year contract valued at USD $200M by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to deliver secure, high-performance satellite communications services to the U.S. and Luxembourg governments. 📡 The MEO Global Services (MGS) Award -- made available to all NATO countries -- will enable government organisations and agencies to use the secure and reliable connectivity services delivered via SES's second-generation medium earth orbit (#MEO) constellation #O3bmPOWER for critical missions. Operational since Q2 this year, the initial six mPOWER satellites are designed with leading innovations in space, ground, and software systems to enable flexible and high-performance connectivity services at scale. With its extensive global ground infrastructure and open architecture, the mPOWER system was purpose-built to provide unprecedented levels of support, and the agility necessary for tactical defense and security operations. Over the next 24 months we will be doubling the size of the constellation, starting with the launch of next 2 mPower satellites end off this year. 5G Broadcast and ATSC 3.0 were among the standards considered by Brazil for next generation TV. Brazil a country with 80% over the air (OTA) viewership could be a model for when OTA is a priority. After four years of testing, Brazil’s SBTVD Forum implied that 5G Broadcast has potential but still has a way to go. Phase 1 of Brazil’s testing (2020-2021) lab tested four candidate standards to see if they could meet Brazil's requirements. Phase 2 testing (2023-2024) field tested the all-important physical layers (which send broadcast signals through the air). Before Phase 2 testing began 5G Broadcast and DTMB-A (the Chinese standard) were eliminated from consideration. Physical layer testing was done on ISDBT-2 (Japanese standard) and ATSC 3.0. What we do find surprising is that fledgling 5G Broadcast technology was even considered alongside these two comparatively established broadcast technologies.
