Stage 1 of the Gardiner Rehabilitation between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue is complete! This is a huge milestone for the project and as of today work has already started on Stage 2 (the center 2 lanes). Demolition of Stage 1 started just less than 6 months ago and since then 35 spans have been removed and reconstructed while keeping 140,000 cars a day moving on the remaining lanes: a remarkable accomplishment. Yesterday I walked on the new lanes, just before the traffic switch over. It was an amazing opportunity to see what we have accomplished and think about what it really takes to deliver complex infrastructure. What it takes is people: people who work hard, people who think ahead to predict challenges and solve them before they become problems, people who collaborate and make decisions, people who stay at the table to work through pain points (there are many), and most of all people who respect that we all bring something different to the table. The people involved in this project are all bringing their best and these are the results.

The reconstruction of the Gardiner Expressway between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue has reached an important milestone. All 209 Stage 1 girders have now been installed, including the final 32 girders in a single overnight shift. I am excited to be leading the City of Toronto’s team on this important project, and working to accelerate the construction with the support of the Province of Ontario.

This week I had the opportunity to visit the Decast facility that is producing the precast girders for the Gardiner reconstruction between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue. Both Mayor Olivia Chow and the Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria showed great interest in the fabrication process and the efforts at the facility that are so critical to the project acceleration that is now well underway.
