🎺 🎺 Focus on McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences researchers - making vaccines easier to use... Dr. Fiona Smaill is a renowned infectious disease expert at McMaster University, known for her pioneering work in vaccine development. With a career focused on advancing treatments for diseases like HIV and tuberculosis, Dr. Smaill has played a pivotal role in leading clinical trials and improving global health outcomes. Recently, her focus has shifted to developing nasal vaccines, a groundbreaking method for delivering vaccines through inhalation rather than needles. These vaccines target the mucosal immune system, the body’s first defence against respiratory infections like COVID-19 and flu. By delivering vaccines directly to the site where viruses first enter, nasal vaccines offer faster, localized protection that could reduce virus transmission. Dr. Smaill’s research includes developing an aerosolized COVID-19 vaccine that shows promising results in animal trials. Her efforts to create needle-free vaccines not only address needle phobia but also improve accessibility, especially in low-resource regions. These vaccines could be cheaper, easier to store, and self-administered, helping bridge the global vaccine access gap. Dr. Smaill’s work continues to push the boundaries of immunization science, making her a leader in infectious disease research. Dear Community, Partners, and Colleagues, We are pleased to share the report for our study "The Experiences of Black Canadians Living with Dementia in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and their Care Partners in Providing Care". The report details findings from interviews we held in 2023 with Black people living with dementia and their care partners. Our goal is to use the study findings to create more awareness about dementia in Black communities and to help inform more culturally responsive supports and services for Black Canadians living with dementia in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. You can find the link to the report and infographic here: https://lnkd.in/g6eWKC2d The objectives of the study were to: 1) Examine the beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes that Black Canadians living with dementia in the GTHA hold about the illness, including how the determinants of mobility impact these beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes. 2) Learn about the experiences that diverse Black Canadians have living with dementia, including how the illness has impacted determinants to mobility, especially within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. 3) Gain an understanding of the supports they use and the community activities they engage in to maintain and enhance their health and well-being, including how the determinants of mobility shape their experiences accessing supports and activities, and how COVID-19 has impacted this. 4) Examine the experiences of their care partners in providing care, including any barriers they face in providing care to address determinants to mobility, and how COVID-19 has impacted this. 5) Use the data from objectives 1-4 to create a knowledge translation product or resource that will help inform future interventions that will restore, maintain, and promote mobility among Black Canadians living with dementia by addressing any structural barriers and gaps they face. 📢 November Presentation Recap: Adapting Digital Competencies for Canada’s Public Health Workforce At this year’s BC Centre for Disease Control Research Week, we presented findings from our study: “Adapting Digital Competencies & Training for Canada’s Public Health Workforce: Canadian Public Health Practitioners’ Perspective.” 💡 Key Takeaways: 1️⃣ Evolving Systems and Foundational Skills: Public health systems must evolve to support digital competencies, starting with strengthening foundational public health skills and integrating digital literacy across existing curricula. 2️⃣ Specialization with Flexibility: While general digital competencies are essential, specialized roles and training should be available to address emerging needs, with hands-on, real-world learning at the core. 📍 Next Steps: Explore faculty perspectives on integrating digital competencies into public health practice. Assessing health-related quality of life (#HRQoL) is a challenge when health fluctuates daily. Together with the McMaster University (Feng Xie) & Monash University (Lidia Engel) we recently completed the study „Health Today“. The study revealed that people with dementia experienced health fluctuations from day to day, mainly triggered by problems with memory, mobility, concentration, sleep, pain, and usual activities. These fluctuations affected the #HRQoL assessment, causing a higher EQ-5D-5L utility variation and nonadherence to the recall period „today“. This could impact clinical and interventional trial conclusions.
