2024 has been nothing short of amazing for the Canadian Association of Municipal Communicators. While the idea for the CAMC took shape in 2023, launching and growing a national association takes time, and we wanted to make sure we were doing it right. 🟪 Late-2023: We completed extensive research into everything from how to set up the association, to how best the CAMC could serve Municipal Communicators. This included looking at how to do so across the gamut of member experience levels, capacity, professional backgrounds, training and education, municipal-specific circumstances, and more. 🟪 Early-2024: We completed a formal engagement process with Municipal Communicators across the country, identifying their professional needs and areas of interest, where they saw potential benefits, how the CAMC could support their work, and more. 🟪 Mid-2024: We registered the CAMC as a federally incorporated non-profit, built the website and members' portal, and worked with Municipal Communicators to establish our plans for Year 1. 🟪 July 24, 2024: The big day – we officially launched the CAMC! Since then, the response from Municipal Communicators has been incredible. From coast to coast, we've seen strong support from those working in municipalities of all sizes and structures. It's been truly special to see the community build and come together. Looking back on the past year is a bit surreal, to be honest. Thank you to everyone who's been part of the initial stages of the CAMC! Now, as we look ahead to 2025, we're really excited to build on what the CAMC has accomplished to date, including offering even more benefits to our Members, continuing to grow our community, establishing the CAMC's first elected board of directors, and more! Campaign aims to highlight B.C.’s ‘untapped workforce’: people with disabilities | Inclusion B.C. has launched a campaign focused on helping businesses understand the benefits of hiring people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and shines a spotlight on Persephone Brewing Company. The brewery has employed about two dozen people with varying disabilities since it launched more than a decade ago. Advocating for inclusivity is personal to brewery co-founder and CEO Byan Smith. Smith, who worked in the disability field before launching the brewery, said integrating inclusivity has long been a priority. But it became paramount when he became a full-time wheelchair user after a bicycle crash in 202e left him paraplegic. “Our message has always been that we need people with disabilities in our lives,” Smith said. “We need people with disabilities in our families and our communities and in our businesses because they make our businesses stronger.” 🙌

🤝 Advocacy in Action On November 19, TIAA hosted its first-ever Tourism Economic Budget Forum and Premier’s Dinner at the Edmonton Convention Centre, a pivotal event bringing together industry leaders and government representatives to champion Alberta’s tourism growth. 🌟 What made this event a game-changer: ✅ 260 industry members joined to discuss key issues shaping Alberta’s tourism landscape. ✅ 24 MLAs, including 11 ministers, engaged in conversations about tourism’s critical role in Alberta’s economy. ✅ Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged TIAA's efforts in uniting the industry and aligning with Alberta’s vision of a $25 billion tourism economy by 2035. ✅ Tourism Impacts by Provincial Riding sheets were shared, providing valuable insights into the sector’s impact across Alberta. ✅ TIAA posed 5 essential questions to advance tourism policy on funding, tax credits, housing, labour, and year-round resorts. On September 7, 2024, the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) reached a significant milestone—the 1st anniversary of the Indigenous Tourism Destination Fund (#ITDF). Launched in 2023, the ITDF is a tangible action towards fulfilling the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action #92, which calls for economic reconciliation. As Canada approaches the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (#NDTR2024)on September 30, this anniversary highlights the importance of creating lasting economic opportunities for the Indigenous tourism industry, ensuring they share in the long-term benefits of tourism across their lands. This fund, administered by ITAC, reflects the growing commitment to reconciliation through partnerships. While 15 non-Indigenous businesses have signed on to support the ITDF, ITAC’s goal was to include 100 non-Indigenous ITDF partners in its inaugural year.  Together, we can support the growth of Indigenous tourism, create meaningful cultural experiences, and empower Indigenous communities across Canada. The Experience Ontario 2025 program provides support for festivals and events with a tourism economic impact to motivate visitors to rediscover Ontario, reconnect people with local experiences, and increase tourism spending. The program aims to support festivals or events in Ontario that will: ✅Offer programming encouraging people to travel, experience events in person and celebrate Ontario ✅Draw tourists and increase visitor spending through innovative programming in partnership with businesses and community partners ✅Provide job opportunities for Ontarians in the tourism, culture and entertainment sectors ✅Increase Ontario’s profile through media, social media or broadcast exposure Your festival or event must meet all the following requirements: 🎆 take place between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, over a minimum of two consecutive days* and consist of a minimum of five hours of programming each day. 🎆Occur in the province of Ontario. Be open to the public at large without membership in a club or group. 🎆Previous year's attendance must include tourist attendance at 30% of overall attendance or 5,000 tourists. 🎆Have been held at least once in the previous three-year period. Follow all municipal and provincial guidelines, including health and safety guidelines. 🎆Submit expenses for your festival or event that are not solely related to marketing or media buys. 🍁*One-day tourism festivals or events held on Canada Day are eligible for funding.
