Enterprise L&D: Once when stakeholders challenged my clients about the ROI at stake in a Project Steering Team (PST) Gate Review Meeting (GRM), attended by a dozen or more people beyond the PST, I jumped up and off the top of my head helped them create an algorithm and then quickly and roughly calculate 1st, the Cost of Non-Conformance (CONC) - and 2nd, the Cost of Conformance (COC) using TQM terms from the late quality guru Philip Crosby. I learned to start with the CONC - as my client had answered a question about the Cost to build and buy the gap modules of a Curriculum Architecture Design we had completed - which was just part of the COC - as deployment costs had yet to be calculated. The audience that day in the PST GRM, were people familiar with TQM concepts and language, and luckily, I knew just enough to connect with them using what I had learned from Philip Crosby's 1980 book, Quality Is Free (https://a.co/d/6YrGG9x). Once their numbers populated my algorithm to roughly establish the current Costs of Non-Conformance, their questions shifted immediately to when could they have the new curriculum content. From Major League Baseball Player to DEI Consultant – now that is a Major Shift!   At least I thought it was going to be, until I interviewed my friend and colleague, Brian Johnson from the The Kaleidoscope Group.     Instead what I knew as the outline of his story became a series of shifts, some major and some more minor. They were different moments of learning and recognition -about culture, about others whose experiences are different to ours. These moments are so important for building our cultural intelligence -especially our #CQStrategy.   Brian took those moments of learning -grabbed them - just like he did in his role as a catcher.   And I’m wondering if we can help people to see and catch those moments more easily.   There were key experiences, key people, wonderful environments that supported learning – all things I’m beginning to see as essential for us to really learn and change.   And I’m thinking about how we create those for people who are learning with us.   Brian speaks about learning to be a truly skilful ball player  - about learning and practicing the fundamentals and how important they are in helping us to respond in the moment when the ball is flying at top speed with a dangerous curve - towards our face!   And I’m reflecting on how we teach the fundamentals of the areas we are focusing on.   What are your thoughts? Today - right now, at this very moment - we unquestioningly allow all employees to create new data.  The outcomes of this de facto process drive nearly all other decisions and strategies regarding technology and security. Is this still the best approach for companies? In my recent Substack post, I pick up the discussion from one of our recent podcasts, starting with the origins of this practice through its current impact on data sprawl and propose an alternative. As IT departments navigate daily breaches, widespread security concerns, and the unstoppable advancements of xAI, now seems like as good a time as any to challenge the conventional wisdom of universal data creation rights.
