Today, I encountered a disheartening situation involving four of my friends who received contract job offers as “Data Analysts” from leading banks and insurance companies. Shockingly, the offered hourly rates were $19, $20, $20 and $21. These contracts are from Canada’s Top 10 prominent agencies. These wages are lower than what many earn in survival jobs, such as those in restaurants or warehouses. My intuition suggests that big companies like banks and insurance companies themselves likely offer better pay. Could it be that the agencies are taking a higher margin, or are the big companies genuinely offering such low rates? I would appreciate your insights on this matter. Let's brainstorm.

At Carta, I've had the opportunity to mentor many sharp and hungry engineering co-ops that come from the University of Waterloo. I've found that the integration of externships into the school's curriculum has led to well-rounded, technologically agile, and effective software engineers. One document that I think that every new grad and intern should study is the Future Ready Talent Framework. This framework really does set a lot of coops forward in terms of their skills relative to the rest of the market. Check it out!

I am honored to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from senior director Amol Farkade, director Avinash Gatty, and my manager Rajeev Karnatak for my role in a significant project at GEP. We've successfully redesigned and launched the Spend Self-Serve application on GEP’s low code platform, Quantum. Key highlights of this project: 1. 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Rebuilt from scratch on Quantum, enhancing flexibility and speed. 2. 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: Successfully migrated 100+ customers to the new system, ensuring continuity and improved service. 3. 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐥: Redesigned both the user interface and backend architecture, integrating MongoDB to enhance performance and scalability. 4. 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Expanded the application's capabilities to serve as a generic data processing tool, capable of handling various forms of Big Data. 5. 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Engineered the new version in under a year, a significant enhancement over the previous version which took two years. This achievement underscores our commitment to efficiency and innovation, leveraging GEP's Quantum platform to expedite the development process without compromising quality. This project was a massive team effort, and it’s gratifying to see our hard work pay off in such tangible ways. Bomb on Mr. Narayana Murthy's thoughts on 70 hours work/week and work life balance!!  While I believe it's essential to prioritize health and happiness, I also feel that passionate individuals often don't subscribe to the typical concept of "work-life balance." For them, passion drives their work, and they’re willing to put in the hours because it brings them greater satisfaction and joy. That sense of fulfillment is their version of work-life balance. This passion could be anything—from excelling at their job, building their own startup, or pursuing a hobby like sports, movies, or simply enjoying life to the fullest. So why should we limit ourselves to a rigid concept of balance? Mr. Narayana Murthy's perspective likely resonates with many of us—it’s just that he framed it in terms of "work" rather than focusing on "passion," which is ultimately what drives us to work as much as we do.

Last week, Steven Astorino challenged Tanmay Bakshi and I to demonstrate building and deploying an application from scratch at the IBM Canada Townhall. We made this possible by leveraging watsonx Code Assistant to accelerate our workflow, allowing us to focus on the inventive components of software development. Since the Grammy Awards are coming up, we decided to build a polling platform where the audience votes for nominees in each of the major categories so we could determine IBM Canada's predictions for the outcomes. watsonx Code Assistant helped us write boilerplate code, SQL queries, data structure transformation logic, and more! As a result, we had a fully deployed application in ~15 minutes and collected over 1400 votes from attendees. Turns out, IBMers share my opinion that Taylor Swift will win Album of the Year 😊

I have known Avni for almost ten years and I am super glad (and not surprised) that her customer-focused approach remains unchanged. We were fortunate to have Avni Savant speak to our teams at G2 India. The session was inspirational, and we learned a lot from her. Avni has a wealth of experience, and we are grateful for the valuable insights she shared with us. During the session brilliantly moderated by Aravind Raj, we discussed several topics and gained a few key takeaways: ⚡ Creating an environment that supports a "fail fast" mindset fosters innovation, and consistent leadership support is essential. Interestingly, this is something that Roger Valade aligns with strongly, and we are just in the middle of an innovation sprint. :) 🧠 We explored areas where AI can be implemented to solve product use cases. Avni stressed that we don't need to reinvent the wheel; instead, we should learn from companies that have successfully adopted AI. The most doable areas for AI implementation are to improve developer productivity and summarize insights and discoveries. 📊 We discussed how squad-specific goals (OKRs) can be integrated with the company's larger goals. For example, we can analyze if improving our product's onboarding experience impacts the adoption rate, and understand if the release was successful. Avni emphasized the importance of using data to make feature iterations and prioritization decisions. 💬 We discussed the significance of product development teams being close to the customers and leveraging customer interviews, and feedback from pre-sales, sales, and support teams. 💗 Lastly, Avni highlighted the importance of self-drivenness and having a clear point of view in one's career. She noted that this proactive approach is valued and appreciated. We are truly grateful to Avni for her time and lessons!

A Leap of Faith: My Journey of 📈 Today marks a significant milestone—I would have completed 8 years at my previous organization. A place where the culture was incredible, the food and facilities top-notch, and the leaders inspiring. I spent over 7 amazing years there, growing both professionally and personally. But a few months ago, I made a bold decision: I left without another offer in hand. Some advised me not to leave without securing my next step—they weren’t wrong. Others said it was the best decision to take a leap of faith—they weren’t wrong either. The way I see it now? When you’re comfortable, that’s the perfect time to restart. Comfort is great, but growth often comes when you push yourself into new, uncharted waters. I made myself a promise: to land a new job before today. And here’s the twist—I found one in under a month! The best part? My new role is fully remote, with a culture that’s 10x better, and a manager who is nothing short of amazing. No office snacks or in-person perks, but the professional growth, autonomy, and support are unmatched. Sometimes, taking a leap feels risky, but trust yourself. #6 Blameless Communication in its Simplest Form Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with many remarkable individuals, each bringing their own unique approach to teamwork and communication. Among them, some stand out for their ability to foster collaboration and emotional safety in high pressure situations. One such individual excelled in turning potentially stressful moments into opportunities for constructive communication. I vividly recall how they handled a common situation when someone broke the build. Instead of assigning blame or finger-pointing, they would send out an email stating, “Looks like there’s some sadness in the build today.” This simple, lighthearted phrasing not only defused tension but also maintained focus on solving the issue without making anyone feel singled out. Another memorable example was during quarterly monolith releases, when all engineering teams gathered for a real-time monitoring session of the deployment, with eyes on error logs. This individual had an extraordinary talent for spotting anomalies and calling them out in a way that was both effective and non-confrontational. When a new error appeared, this person would send a message like, “Look at this cool error, it seems to be logging 1K times per second.” Even when they knew the root cause or the responsible team, their phrasing left space for the owning team to investigate and take ownership, keeping a spirit of shared accountability. Their brilliance extended beyond these moments into everyday communication. They had a knack for expressing dissatisfaction with humor and relatability. Instead of harsh criticism, they might say something like, “That is a turd,” or “That makes me sad.” These candid yet playful remarks captured what many were thinking but didn’t know how to articulate without risking offending someone. Their words conveyed sentiment in a way that everyone could connect with, ensuring messages landed in a sensitive manner. This individual’s approach was masterful in balancing honesty and empathy, turning communication into a tool for uniting people rather than dividing them. Their ability to humanize even the most technical challenges left a lasting impression and set a standard for what it means to lead in both kindness and clarity.

Presenting at #MRCVegas2024 was a true pleasure and the response to our session, "Future of Strong Auth – Passkey" was fantastic. Shout out to Anand Bahety, Mahendar Madhavan, and the team for their invaluable contribution in enabling passkey capabilities for eBay users. Also, thanks to Kathryn Irwin and Julie Fergerson, CPFPP from #MRC for the opportunity and for making this conference possible. A few things to share on the topic of Passkey and its impact on payment risk management: 1. Passkey has significant potential as an option for 3DS, a standard currently in draft at EMVCo. If anyone is interested in learning or collaborating further, feel free to reach out to Ulrich Herberg, Ph.D. from eBay who has been actively involved in these discussions. 2. It would be particularly intriguing to see how EU regulations will classify passkey—whether as a two-factor or as a single-factor authentication method. 3. I learned from some of my friends about how some EU banks are already adopting mobile apps for verification over SMS. Similar innovations in the U.S. would be awesome! I'm eager to hear your thoughts on the following topics: 1. Has the widespread adoption of 3DS in the EU indeed resulted in lower chargebacks compared to the U.S.? 2. Given Passkey's potential, do you think it has the capability to not only safeguard accounts but also mitigate first-party chargebacks?

🚀 The name of the software delivery game is always having the ability to extend time. Delivering consistently at a manageable cadence is crucial.
