This is so unique, access to experts on the ground in sports. In Tech, we always had access to industry analysts to guide our business decisions. However, in sports many analyst groups I used to rely on like Gartner, IDC, don't cover an industry that contributes around 1% to the GDP (yet). Not to mention that sports technology is 🔥 Private Equity are heavily investing, so are large brands. I bet they all have lots of questions. I know a group who just might have some answers ! #sports

Let me ask, what is the most unique partnership you’ve seen from a fan perspective? It’s a fascinating study to look at which leagues are incorporating the most unique of assets. Sports fans will pay up to attend ‘must-see’ events and ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experiences (see: UFC’s $22mm gate at Sphere). In fact, they’re 1.3x more likely to spend on hobbies, luxury goods, and experiences than non-sports fans. The problem volume sports properties and most other rights owners have though is few of their games qualify as either–even if the fan has a premium seat. It’s simply too easy to catch the next one, and the overall experience often isn’t great regardless of where one sits (think: traffic, lines). Rights owners can’t solve for every pain point that fans encounter on their way to the stadium, during their time there, and on the return trip home. But an increasing number are coming to realize that they are allowing others to dictate the fan’s experience with their product by failing to take ownership of as much of the outing as possible. That “is not the optimal strategy,” Flavil Hampsten (president of property sales, Elevate) said. Elevate acquired Zinc Agency, an event solutions company, in August and subsequently introduced Elevate Experiences to help sports properties concerned about the experiential and revenue leakage that exists try to plug it. The company offers a menu of premium experiential add-ons that fans and corporate clientele can bolt onto ticket packages. Just like any business starting up discoverability becomes most important especially when content is so fragmented. Understanding the streaming space and how to get it in front of the consumer can be daunting and expensive. A "back-to-basics" approach might be necessary for the Canadian Football League to gain more traction with younger generations of consumers. Ahead of today's division semifinals, Toronto Star reported on the optimism surrounding the league given upticks in attendance and viewership in 2024. This is great to see, yet resonating with youth remains a recurring issue. I conduct a survey of my sports marketing students' sport interests and media consumption habits each term, the results of which I reported here in a post last week. The number of students who mentioned football as a sport they watch has increased (to 10 out of 41), but it's American football, likely owing to the NFL's prevalence in pop culture. No students mentioned Canadian football as a favourite sport to watch and none mentioned a CFL club as a favourite team. Of my students this term (aged 20 and 21), 68% are visible minority - the highest proportion since I started conducting the survey - and the majority are South Asian. Canadian football isn't part of their culture, discussions in their household and conversations with their friends, so they neither know the league nor the concept of the sport. I've believed for a while the CFL needs to take a "back to basics" approach to marketing to younger more diverse generations of consumers. This would entail launching an online-focused education-centric marketing campaign that explains the concept of football, players' positions, key plays and culture around the sport, and delivers the content through vessels (e.g. influencers) to media platforms where consumers reside (e.g. social media, apps, social video). This approach may begin to "tackle" a key barrier to entry for today's young diverse fluid fan. Great to join Jason Ribeiro, Ph.D. of Calgary Surge last night at the Global Business Forum in Banff and talk about the Business of Sport and Entertainment. We are entering a new age of fandom. The sports industry is a $200B ecosystem now, all underpinned by the world's most passionate consumer.  While industry revenues and valuations are at all-time highs, they are increasingly predicated on our ability to engage a rapidly changing customer at a time when competition for fan attention is also at an all-time high. We know fan bases are drastically less homogenous than we once thought. And 76% percent of consumers today expect personalized experiences. The future growth of our industry lies in our ability to build deep relationships with our fans. To do that, we must first understand them.
