Canada continues to be a focal point of North American EV battery supply chain development. The government is investing $10 million toward critical mineral recovery and recycling, an essential part of battery lifecycles. The investment will go to two Ontario-based companies, Electra Battery Materials Corporation and MIRARCO - Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation. They’ll receive $5 million each to finance the development of new technologies designed to extract metals from shredded flat batteries. As the EV battery supply chain continues to grow, new solutions are needed to ensure sustainability. Stellantis has a new battery materials supplier with Canadian roots: NOVONIX. The global automaker is tapping NOVONIX, a battery technology company that spun out of Dalhousie University's Jeff Dahn Research Group in 2013, to supply its battery cell partners in North America with synthetic graphite. The two companies are committing to a target of 86,250 to 115,000 tonnes of synthetic graphite offtake beginning in 2026. “We are excited to have Stellantis’ commitment, now as our largest customer, to support their North American EV growth plans,” says Chris Burns, CEO of NOVONIX, in a press release announcing the binding offtake agreement. NOVONIX began as a small startup in a Halifax suburb. It is now headquartered in Australia with offices and facilities in Canada and the United States. Asahi Kasei Breaks Ground on Lithium-ion Battery Separator Plant in Canada Asahi Kasei Battery Separator Corporation marked a significant step in its commitment to supporting the North American electric vehicle (EV) market by breaking ground on its new lithium-ionbattery separator manufacturing facility in Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada. The plant is expected to begin commercial production in 2027, subject to obtaining permits and approvals from relevant authorities. It is planned to operate as a joint venture facility between Asahi Kasei and Honda.
