Community income tax clinics have proven to be among the most powerful poverty reduction tools in our arsenal. On average, they put between $5,000 and $6,000 back into the pockets of those who need it most. Currently, these community tax clinics are delivered off the sides of desks without any funding. In order to reach the 80 per cent of low-income residents in Ottawa who do not currently access these services, there is a need for investment. Email your city councillor. Ask them to fund community tax clinics in the 2025 budget. Let’s not leave federal and provincial dollars on the table. Together, we can build a stronger, more equitable society — one tax return at a time." 💗

🚀 **Empowering Black Entrepreneurs in Canada: The Journey Continues** 🌟 In the aftermath of George Floyd's tragic death, major Canadian banks acknowledged the urgent need for more accessible funding for Black entrepreneurs. However, three years later, we find that transparency and progress remain a challenge. While some banks, such as CIBC and RBC, have stepped up with significant commitments to support Black-led businesses, many institutions are still hesitant to share critical data on their loan programs aimed at dismantling the barriers faced by the Black community. Jackee Kasandy, CEO of the Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses of Canada Society, highlighted the ongoing struggles: “Funding remains a challenge. Despite some progress, the banking and funding systems still move slowly in offering truly equitable opportunities.” This ongoing conversation is vital not just for addressing past injustices, but for fostering a diverse and thriving economic landscape. We must continue to press for accountability, transparency, and action. How does a funder evaluation set out to assess grantmakers for their commitment to provide unrestricted, multi-year funding and deliberately support orgs led by equity-seeking communities… and not a single United Way ends up on this list? In GTA alone, United Way supports 69 Anchor agencies with five-year funding for both programming and core operating support. And we’re not talking about $ to fund half a position, these are significant core dollars that are frankly unique in the sector and allow for more “boutique” grants to ride the wave. And GTA, like other United Ways, has done stellar work to invest in specific funds, like Reconciliation and Equity org funding for organizations led by Indigenous, Black and other equity communities with flexibility to build long-term organizational strength. Again, it’s all right there transparently available on their website. Excellent organizations on this list, but total exclusion of the biggest core funders of community orgs outside government is not making a lot of sense to me.
