The Pride Mentoring Program held the final "Mentoring the Mentors" session for #Cohort3 this afternoon. We were honoured to welcome Nancy Hamzawi, Executive Vice President of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), who shared invaluable advice with our mentors. Nancy spoke about the unique responsibilities of 2SLGBTQIA+ leaders in organizations, emphasizing the importance of self-care and recentering as part of the mentoring process. She encouraged mentors to "assume nothing," reminding us that every mentee is unique, and effective mentorship starts with listening, learning together, and meeting mentees where they are. She included practical strategies, such as managing expectations, navigating difficult conversations, and being mindful of the emotional weight tied to identity. Nancy also underscored mentorship as a two-way learning experience, where both mentor and mentee can grow through approaches like job shadowing and open dialogue. Her parting words were particularly inspiring: as leaders, we must challenge the voice of imposter syndrome and help our mentees build confidence in their abilities. Mentors play a critical role in fostering growth and resilience through intentional guidance and encouragement. We are deeply grateful to Nancy for her insights, which will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on our mentors and the future leaders they support. Applications for #Cohort3 are now closed. I had the honor of moderating a panel at Canadian Association for Global Health’s Annual Conference #CCGH2024 with Violaine Mitchell, Amie Batson, Muriel Mac-Seing, and Dr. Margaret Mutumba, “Reimagining Leadership: New Approaches to Multi-Faceted Challenges.” Two things stood out to me that we believe at WomenLift Health: both who leads AND how they lead matters. As World Health Organization aptly said: today we live in a world where global health is delivered by women but led by men. That often means decisions about women’s health and health care are made by men. The second is that in order to solve these fast moving, complex and interconnected crisis of health, climate, and conflict, the top-down leadership styles that accelerated these, will not get us out of them. Women leaders who practice authentic, inclusive, strategic, and impactful leadership have an established track record of amplifying marginalized voices and working closely with the communities they serve, which is linked to improved outcomes. Global health institutions require leadership that can adapt to the complex nature of these crises. Leaders that prioritize not only strategic thinking and decisiveness but also empathy, inclusion, and collaboration are essential to inspire bold innovation and action, especially in times of tremendous uncertainty. Women possess the expertise, lived experience, and strengths needed for inclusive and collaborative leadership. As crises threaten people’s health and well-being, leaders that prioritize community solutions, strengthen community resilience, and lead with empathy will be the most effective and impactful. Thank you SO much to each of the panelists for sharing their knowledge, wisdom, and their vulnerability with us. EVALUATING YOUR ONTARIO HEALTH TEAM’s STRATEGIC OUTCOMES: OHTs were officially created when all the Member Community Governance Boards agreed on a powerful SHARED VISION for a transformed healthcare services delivery system. The Ministry then ratified the Shared Vision from the CEOs and their Boards as the very purpose for creating the OHT. They exist to achieve the outcomes embedded in the Shared Vision. So, after five years and billions of dollars, “how’s it going, eh?” Have you achieved the vision? Board members need to explore data demonstrating the progress that has been made achieving the vision over the past five years. Here is how community governance board members can think about what a true “system transformation”’ would look like/ feel like — if you were a patient, family member,’staff, physician, or other partners along the continuum of care across the fragmented silos within the OHT. Is your OHT still stuck in the “First Curve Design Stage”? Or, are you emerging to become a “Second Curve System Design”?

The Health Neighbourhood integrates services from all healthcare sectors and community supports, placing the Patient's Medical Home (PMH) at its core. This framework ensures that Albertans receive personalized care and support, enabling them to manage their health within their own community—where they live, work, and play. Care transitions refer to the process of patients moving through the Health Neighbourhood as their health and care requirements evolve. These transitions are crucial moments in patient care. Patients affiliated with a PMH benefit from improved continuity of care and better health outcomes. When the PMH cannot meet all of a patient’s needs, they must transition to other providers within the Health Neighbourhood. During these transitions, it is essential for the Health Neighbourhood to collaborate and coordinate care to maintain continuity.

On December 27, 2024, a virtual meeting was held with the Primary Health Care Technical Working Group from 13 provinces to review 2024 achievements and plans for 2025. Key outcomes included: 1. **Strengthening Health Centre Services**: Implement action plans in January 2025 to enhance collaboration and the quality improvement of health services delivery. 2. **Around-the-Clock Services**: Ensure all health centres operate 24/7 with regular rotating duty. 3. **Building on Success**: Continue implementing successful PHC-BIF initiatives from 2024 to 2025. 4. **Prioritizing Health Education**: Focus on raising awareness about healthy lifestyles, especially “less salt, less fat, less sugar and minimizing to zero alcohol consumption.” 5. **Updating Hotline Information**: Refresh health centre numbers by January 15th, 2025. 6. **Completing Outstanding Tasks**: Aim to complete the health centre quality improvement monitoring 100%. 7. **Thorough Inventory Management**: Complete inventory forms for better resource management, especially for those who have not done so. 8. **Embracing Digital Connectivity**: Promote digital platforms for better patient communication, and PHDs will resolve it, especially in remote areas. 9. **Quarterly Collaboration**: Commit to quarterly meetings in 2025 to track progress and ensure transparency. These strategic points aim to enhance primary health care in the 13 provinces by 2025.

Yesterday's Life Sciences breakfast exploring Toronto's Regenerative Medicine Frontier can honestly be summed up in one word - WOW. Gene therapy. Advanced AI modelling. Best in class T-cell therapy. Digital twins. Transplants that get stronger for new recipients. Organ drone delivery. It may sound like the stuff of a science fiction novel but for Toronto researchers, scientists, and health care leaders, it's just another day of work. The unbelievable innovation and development of life changing regenerative medicine coming out of our region is phenomenal. We have all the ingredients for success. We are sharing those ingredients with the world and changing the international healthcare landscape as a result.
