As Canadian Premiers gather today, the proposed 25% tariff on Canadian goods is at the forefront of retailers' minds. The Retail Council of Canada is sounding the alarm about the significant challenges these tariffs pose to Canada’s retail sector and economy. Key concerns include: - Economic Fallout: Tariffs could hurt jobs, lower household incomes, and reduce affordability for retail goods. - Increased Costs: Each 1% tariff on U.S. imports could add $1.25 billion to retailers’ costs, pushing prices higher for consumers. - Supply Chain Disruptions: Retaliatory measures might target essential U.S. imports, including food, creating additional pressures. The mere threat of tariffs creates uncertainty and instability for Canadian retailers, making planning inventory, pricing, and operations harder. The RCC team advocates for a united effort to avoid a trade war, protect Canadian consumers, and stabilize supply chains.
