The U.S. may impose tariffs on copper imports within weeks, ahead of the previously scheduled 270-day deadline, Bloomberg reported. If implemented, the tariff rate could reach as high as 25%, which would send shocks to the global copper market. Last month, U.S. President Donald #Trump had directed the U.S. Department of Commerce to assess copper tariffs and submit a report within 270 days. Given the rapid progress of the review, a decision is expected soon. Companies like Freeport-McMoRan, Rio Tinto and Hudbay Minerals Inc. are already producing copper domestically and stand ready to expand operations if given the chance. Freeport-McMoRan alone operates seven copper mines in the U.S., and its latest project is expected to produce over 200 million pounds of copper annually. Meanwhile, Taseko’s Florence Copper is set to produce an average of 85 million pounds of copper each year using a process that minimizes environmental impact.
