At a recent conference, AI was all the talk. A lot of colleagues in Comms hate it, a lot love it and a lot are a little, unsure. I'm a lover. I started off being pretty skeptical (rightfully so), but as I took time to explore various AI apps, I got more comfortable with all the ways I could use this shift in technology to improve my personal and work life. Not only have I gotten comfortable, I've done training and I've even gone so far as to take a part time gig that analyzes AI (it's not glamorous but super interesting!). Side note: AI drafted this post for me but I rolled up my sleeves and rewrote a lot. This... right here...this is how I use AI. AI is the unsung hero of my workday. Whether I’m juggling campaigns or brainstorming creative content, AI has been my trusty sidekick (and occasionally, the co-worker who never takes a lunch break). Here’s how I put AI to work: 💡 Brainstorming brilliance: When I’m stuck in a creative rut, AI helps me riff on ideas—whether for a campaign tagline, a new website page, or that perfect social media post. 📝 Drafting content: Need a concise job ad or a sparkling piece of corporate messaging? AI drafts, I finesse. It’s like having an assistant who “gets” me. 📅 Planning ahead: From cybersecurity awareness campaigns to a 2025 calendar featuring iconic cleaning characters in movies (yes, it’s as fun as it sounds), AI helps me map out the big picture. 🎯 Fact-checking & inspiration: When I need quick research or fresh perspectives, AI’s always there to throw out ideas—sometimes brilliant, sometimes hilariously off-track. 💾 Streamlining the boring stuff: From generating tables to crafting spreadsheet templates, AI saves me hours of mind-numbing work—letting me focus on the creative (and fun!) side of communications. AI doesn’t replace me—it enhances what I do. It’s like having a colleague who’s always available, unflinchingly honest (even if it’s wrong sometimes), and incapable of stealing my snacks. If you're not harnessing the strategic power of your comms person or team, you're missing out on incredible opportunities to elevate your organization. When mentoring other professionals, I hear very similar sentiments, and many leave this profession or their organization because their organizations treat their work as transactional. Anybody can make a flyer, powerpoint or other simple media--your comms person/team can let you know if it's the most effective way to deliver your message, and whether it fits into the larger strategy. And if it doesn't, they'll let you know what will. Listen to them. Heed their advice. Respect their professional expertise.

What did our Mid-Year Conference Manager Survey say about elections, AI and conference activity? 🎭 Avoiding the drama –13% of respondents said that they were avoiding sessions that focused on the U.S. Presidential election, but a quarter of all respondents said that they were moving the location of their flagship event to avoid the election. 🛫 Moving around & Hopping the pond – 43% of respondents said that they were changing the dates and location of their flagship events this year. Several added new geographic markets. 🦾 AI case studies wanted – 69% of conference managers responded that, so far in 2024, demand for AI content is greater than last year. BUT… there is a preference for AI case studies instead of sessions discussing the general impact of AI. PRWeek's great 2024 Business Report highlights the key challenge facing our industry. Communications is more important than ever. Comms and policy leaders are being asked to play far larger roles as business partners supporting ever more stakeholders. So why did the industry suffer so much in 2023 after many years of growth? As an sector, we are not adapting fast enough to the needs. Organizations are desperate for help but also under tremendous financial strain. They now need both senior level counsel and advisory support as well as deep domain expertise to actually produce. By and large, our industry is still split by this chasm - between strategic and tactical. Clients cannot afford to separate these, either in time or money.
