🫒🌿 Valmi Olive Oil is the first Albanian product registered internationally under Geographical Indication (GI) through the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO. The whole process, starting from the national registration to the international application, has been supported by the Albanian Swiss Intellectual Property Project (ALSIP). This achievement strengthens the identity of the local community and increases the consumers trust due to quality assurance. Traditional methods and regional #heritage associated to the product are thereby being preserved. ®️ Having a strong intellectual property (IP) system is fundamental to creating sound framework conditions for #SustainableTrade. Through the Global Program for Intellectual Property Rights (GPIPR), which is implemented by the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property IGE IPI, SECO supports developing countries to establish efficient and effective protection of intellectual property rights. As part of the GPIPR projects, the program includes training or advice on IP policy, strategy and legislation, as well as Geographical Indications.🏛️🌍 #OliveOil #IntellectualProperty #Albania #Switzerland #DevelopmentCooperation #SECO

What happens after a development program ends?🤔🌱 The Sustainable Cocoa Production Program, implemented by Swisscontact with support from SECO and private sector partners from 2012-2020, aimed to reduce #poverty, boost #productivity, and drive environmental #sustainability in Indonesia’s cocoa sector. 🔎 Four years later, an ex-post evaluation conducted by Agramondis - Research and Consulting shows that many of the program’s benefits have lasted. ✅ Higher yields sustained. Farmers increased yields by 155% during the program. Those with continued private sector collaboration retained most of their gains four years later. ✅ Environmental impact continued. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fertiliser use fell by 24% and remained low after the program ended. ✅ Private sector partnerships matter. 93% of farmers with continued support remained certified, showing that ongoing private sector engagement is key to maintaining market access. ✅ A scalable model. The program linked sustainability with profitability, offering key lessons for future initiatives supporting sustainable agricultural value chains. 💡Opportunities for further impact: Regional disparities remain. Closing these gaps will require strong public-private collaboration. The evaluation confirms that targeted interventions, market integration, and long-term engagement drive lasting change. 📌 Read the full evaluation report here: https://lnkd.in/dfiDNkFN Embassy of Switzerland in Indonesia Koltiva #SustainableAgriculture #Cocoa #DevelopmentImpact #ClimateAction #PublicPrivatePartnerships

SECO supported the side event of the first G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) working group in Pretoria, under G20 South Africa. The event was co-organized by two of our partners: Women's World Banking and FinMark Trust on the topic of "Moving the needle: Advancing financial inclusion, from access to usage". 💰🤝 Panels on financial inclusion 2.0, digital public infrastructure, measuring and advancing #GenderEquality as well as on consumer protection provided insightful discussions. For SECO, gender equality is not only the right thing to do but it is also #SmartEconomics. 📈💡 There are many ways of contributing to gender equality, starting with advice on policy design and implementation, providing training and financial literacy, ensuring consumer protection and proper supervision where gender data also provides useful insights for well-informed decision-making. 👉 The side event has illustrated the opportunities and challenges of financial inclusion for all actors: from regulators to policy makers, private sector actors and individuals. #G20GPFI #FinancialInclusion #Gender #GlobalPartnership #InternationalCooperation #SouthAfrica

South Africa's water infrastructure is facing a critical challenge, requiring over R900 billion to address the existing deficit. The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has established a Water Partnerships Office (WPO) in the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) in partnership with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). The mandate and role of the WPO is to create opportunities for the private sector to support municipalities with the delivery of water services. The DBSA and WPO have partnered with the SECO Economic Cooperation and Development , where SECO provides financial support to the WPO for project preparation and capacity building across the various standardised programmes in the WPO. During a function to launch the partnership, the Director General of DWS, Dr Sean Phillips, expressed his gratitude to the Swiss Government and SECO for the support provided to the WPO and stressed the need for project preparation of water and sanitation projects. This initiative aims to provide sustainable infrastructure that promotes economic growth, dignity, and justice for all South Africans. Mr. Lebo Seperepere from the DBSA emphasised the importance of infrastructure in supporting these goals, while the WPO’s Mr. Johann Lübbe highlighted the need for private sector investment to tackle issues like non-revenue water. water reuse, non-sewered sanitation and wastewater treatment. His Excellency Mirko Manzoni, the Swiss Ambassador, stressed the urgency of investing in water infrastructure, noting many communities still suffer from inadequate services despite promising dam levels. He expressed hope that the partnership will mobilise investment and empower municipalities to improve their water management. The programme includes three key focuses: 1. Infrastructure planning and project bankability for municipalities. 2. Mobilising private sector investment for fast-tracking projects. 3. Building municipal capacity for effective water resource management. This collaboration underlines the DBSA’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development, aiming for a future where all communities have access to clean water and adequate sanitation.
