Panarchy, a term devised to describe evolving hierarchical systems with multiple interrelated elements, offers an important new framework for understanding and resolving this dilemma [e.g. stability/instability]. Panarchy is the structure in which systems, including those of nature (e.g., forests) and of humans (e.g., capitalism), as well as combined human-natural systems (e.g., institutions that govern natural resource use such as the Forest Service), are interlinked in continual adaptive cycles of growth, accumulation, restructuring, and renewal [emphasis mine]. At a zoomed out level, some of these changes are hard to notice: Temperate climates shifting north Tropical and Arid climates growing Cold climates disappearing. But what if we were to zoom into the city level to see how these changes affect the way each city feels? This project looks at 70 global cities, and tracks their classification from present day to 2070. So far, there are over 50,000 species of living algae documented currently. And one thing that people sometimes forget is that algae are the base of many food webs and are an integral part of a healthy aquatic ecosystem. But, algae can also grow out of control if the water around them contains too many nutrients, resulting in harmful algal blooms. And did you know that toxins from these harmful algal blooms could get kicked up into the air as airborne algae? With the focus on climate change growing, scientists are continuing to document the effects of climate change on algae, and how airborne algae in turn interact with our environment. On this episode of Climate Connections, Mickey Rogers, PhD, Pauling Fellow and Chemist, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, who is researching airborne algae and its impact on atmospheric processing, shares her insights. WE ARE NATURE When I introduced #regeneration and #regenerativephilosophyandpractice in the Danish consulting company Promentum 5 years ago I made a solemn promise to the regenerative agenda: Never to compromise the ontological fact that humans are nature. If we miss out on that, do not call what you do for regeneration. If you make nature into a metaphor, call it exactly that. Nature-as-a-metaphor. Not regeneration. If you make 'life' into human and organizational life only and at the same time carry a little distance to nature do not call what you do for regeneration. Why? Because the regenerative agenda is too important to mess around with. We are heading towards an unimaginable ecological crisis and a fatal break down of our life-support systems. We urgently need to transform our global economy by intensifying a healthy, intricate interconnectedness with nature by abiding to her principles. We need to accelerate the regeneration of our soil, our oceans, our cities, our value-chain systems, our organizations, our products, our services, our leadership etc. at a volume that is colossal by intensifying the intricate and thriving interconnectedness with nature. Working regeneratively is to recognize, sense, feel, live, breath.. nature. Gregory Bateson told us this more than 50 years ago: "The major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think". And then there is me. Just had a conversation with one of Germany's leading experts on natural sciences. He flagged two major issues: ⒈ There is a lot of misinformation and so-called "experts" that are offering unscientific facts on biodiversity protection and its importance for our economies. ⒉ Whilst investment in short-term targets is happening, the key big innovation efforts that will be crucial for our future are not getting funded. So much has been written about degrowth... yet, there are many false claims about degrowth in this International Monetary Fund article by economist Daniel Susskind. “The “degrowth” movement proposes a radical response: if growth is the problem, then less growth—or even no growth or negative growth—is the solution.” ** Degrowth isn’t about GDP but a focus on wellbeing and resource use within planetary limits. It would likely result in a reduction in GDP, if it is measured. “If anything, environmentalists underestimate the damage growth has done given all the additional problems it presents.” **Degrowth is a transdisciplinary field, pulling from ecological economics and the social sciences. Environmentalism is a different thing. “The [degrowth] movement builds on a misunderstanding of how economic growth really works.” **The degrowth movement is built on a keen understanding of how growth really works. Technology improvements drive growth which enables more technology improvements to drive more growth. The imperative is capital accumulation. “The mistake is reflected in the slogan “infinite growth is not possible on a finite planet.” But this is wrong—it is possible.” ** Physics dictates that material use can’t be infinite, and recycling is limited. Can economics be extra-physics? “The problem is that this way of thinking is rooted in an old-fashioned view of economic activity: one that pictures the economy as a material world.” **The real economy converts resources into shelter, food, water, energy, mobility, health, education, communications networks. Crazy that this is "old-fashioned". “Growth does not come from using more and more finite resources” **The Global Resources Outlook Report 2024 projects significant resource growth if GDP doubles by 2060. Is it wrong? “Moreover, degrowth shows us how catastrophic it would be to abandon the pursuit of growth altogether.” **Is there a reference? Degrowth scholarship explains the opposite. “growth comes from technological progress” Degrowth is not anti-technology, as the article seems to imply. Technological improvements ought to be driven by social purpose, eg reorganising global food production. The rest of the article is about green growth and good growth. Sounds amazing, but there's no data. Degrowth scholarship uses empirical data on materials, energy and decent living standards to explore how reorganising production and distribution can enable wellbeing for all within planetary boundaries. Modelling strongly suggests that degrowth is plausible and necessary. The degrowth challenge is to create a vision that is as desirable as the green growth fantasy.

Wow, even the Harvard Business Review is recognizing that there are 'limits to growth": «There is a critical need to reassess the focus on continuous growth in the global economic system. The concept of “degrowth” challenges the necessity of perpetual economic expansion for human prosperity, suggesting it contradicts ecological sustainability on a planet with finite resources. Despite some resistance, especially from the business sector, the arguments supporting degrowth underscore the inextricable link between economic growth and environmental degradation, proposing a shift toward more sustainable business practices and a reevaluation of the myths surrounding “sustainable growth,” such as the effectiveness of energy transitions and efficiency improvements, which often overlook significant environmental impacts and dependencies on existing energy infrastructures. The article advocates for a societal movement toward reducing consumption and over-production, while embracing values of care and redistribution, challenging traditional market-first ideologies.»

Green Party Manifesto touts carbon tax and ambitious renewable energy targets The Party is the third to launch its manifesto for next month’s general election, after the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives. Labour’s manifesto is expected on Thursday (13 June). Mainstream media coverage has largely focused on the Party’s approach to taxation. A Green government would, for example, implement a 1% wealth tax on individuals with assets exceeding £10m. An enhanced rate of 2% would apply to those with assets exceeding £1bn. National Insurance would also go up for those earning significantly over the national average. The Party claims its changes would impact around 15% of people while benefiting the many. Another key inclusion, perhaps of more interest to those working in the green economy, is the promise of a carbon tax of £120 per tonne, initially to be applied to sectors such as fossil fuels and heavy industry. The tax would be expanded to other sectors over time and gradually increased, over a decade, to £500 per tonne. edie

#Forest-based #carboncredits have had a rough couple of years. Numerous academic studies and media investigations have unearthed vastly inflated #carbon savings and failed safeguards for forest communities amongst the world’s Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (#REDD+) projects, which boast a quarter of all carbon credits to date. However, a new peer-reviewed Nature study by 27 researchers across 11 institutions including the Environmental Defense Fund , The Nature Conservancy and Columbia University, has backed the industry’s scientific credentials: out of all the world’s #nature-based climate solutions, the paper found that the four leading forest-based solutions have robust scientific foundations, while the others need urgent additional research before their role as a #climatesolution is understood. The study explicitly looked at the scientific basis of, and expert confidence in, the world’s known #naturebasedsolutions (#NBSs); rather than the implementation of individual projects, carbon crediting methodologies or co-benefits. “In tropical forests, there have been complaints about whether those projects are doing what they purport to do – but that is an implementation challenge,” says Brian Buma, senior climate scientist at EDF and a co-author of the report. “For forests, we have a pretty good scientific basis and our methods just get better and more complementary. We have a lot of ways of measuring the carbon in #forests and the associated fluxes. I've developed and given several talks in recent months. The first is entitled "Sacred Ecology: A New Path for Humanity", which explores vital intersections between deep spiritual wisdom and ecological understanding, introduces concepts of systems science and how they flip the separation / domination paradigm of the Anthropocene (or Capitalocene, if you prefer) on it's head, examines some of the origins of that paradigm within the Scientific Revolution in Europe during the Renaissance, and highlights some leading thinkers and movements helping to forge a new path forward of healing and integration. The second is "Sustainability: What It Is, Why It Matters, and What We Can Do", providing an overview of key concepts and areas of concentration within the wide-ranging world of sustainability as well as more practical, hands-on strategies for incorporating sustainable thinking and behavior into everyday life. The third is "Sustainability Careers" and is aimed at helping teens discover and learn about opportunities and possibilities within different domains of sustainability, hoping to ignite their own unique interests, passion and imagination. All have been well-received, and continue to evolve as part of my own calling to live, teach and champion transformative thinking and ideas. But there's one root teaching and teacher that keep calling out to me. The "Work That Reconnects", developed by the amazing Joanna Macy and many others over decades (now a growing, global organization with fantastic online resources at www.workthatreconnects.org), is a framework and process designed to help people awaken to their innate connection to the web of life, to transcend short-term thinking and move into deep time, to honor both their pain and their inherent resilience and wisdom as part of a collective of humanity that is rapidly moving toward collapse, and to shift toward a new ecologically-centered path, as I talk about in "Sacred Ecology". I became a certified facilitator of this before completing my Masters in Sustainability, and gave a workshop as part of that process. I think it's time to start moving into The Work again. More people need to know about this incredibly rich teaching and community!

Heart Aerospace (Anders Forslund): • Developing the ES-30 hybrid electric aircraft for short-haul flights, Heart Aerospace set clear milestones to keep investors engaged. • Insight: Moving towards project financing over traditional equity to align with the longer cycles of aerospace development. 🌐 The New Climate Tech Funding Landscape • Today’s Series B raises often involve a shift from angel investors to climate tech-focused funds and strategic corporate partners. • Building relationships with strategic investors—who bring both capital and expertise—was a recurring theme. 🔥 Final Thought The journey may be longer in 2024, but adaptability, smart pivots, and focus on milestones can help climate tech founders bridge the Series B gap. Record breaking temperatures, storms, floods, droughts, famine, climate refugees, and yet most governments across the globe appear to be ignoring the urgency of the situation. Climate scientists are in an uproar but their voices go unheeded. Climate protestors are being excoriated, arrested and imprisoned. I just don't get it. Our government in Australia is focused on trying to provoke China into war, at the behest of our masters, the warmongering USA. China is the one country with the resources and capabilities to potentially help reverse this ongoing extinction level catastrophe and yet, petty economic self interests, ideological differences or ego is preventing Western governments from swallowing their pride and working with China to come up with global and local solutions to fight this onslaught. I will be called a Commie and China sympathiser in keeping with the sentiments above for even positing this heinous suggestion. Fortunately I am in the final quarter of my life's journey and don't have children so it doesn't really impact me, but surely some of you out there must realize that we are in a crisis and feel the need to pressure our leaders to divert their attention from economic and possible physical war and focus on saving our fragile planet?
