Tokenisation of RWA (real world assets) is a hot topic in the Web3 space. In most current contexts, it is about the tokenisation of real world traditional financial products which provide benefits such as enabling liquidity for assets that are traditionally illiquid, democratises investment opportunities to a broader segment of investors by fractionalising certain classes of assets, enabling innovative DeFi features for the traditional financial assets being tokenised and so on. The share of survey participants who are considering adopting DLT and/or blockchain has increased by 9% to 38% this year from 29% in 2023. The increase in issuance is more pronounced, indicating that those already active with blockchain debt issuance are accelerating more rapidly than new entrants. CBDCs FAVOURED OVER OTHER SETTLEMENT SOLUTIONS While stablecoins can provide a means of settling cash on-chain, their relative novelty means that market participants are reluctant to embrace the new risks they may present. One survey participant highlighted this concern stating, ‘only CBDCs completely remove unnecessary credit/counterparty risk’. TOKENISATION MAY BRING CHANGES TO MARKET STRUCTURE  Survey participants’ activities also demonstrate this thinking – 65% are not working on incorporating tokenised assets into their own operations, while 15% are considering it. The final 20% are presently testing use cases. MARKET MAY NOT BE READY FOR FASTER SETTLEMENT  Respondents still showed a preference for longer settlement cycles. T+2 and T+3 settlement cycles were chosen by 24% and 20% of respondents. Though shorter settlement cycles are beneficial for avoiding settlement risk, they bring additional operational challenges. Because of this, 24% of respondents believe that settling on demand might be the best option. ‘We must stay flexible on the settlement cycle because it can be difficult for some issuers to reduce the cycle. However, [it] should be possible,’ stated one survey participant. SECURITY RISKS A LEADING CONCERN FOR DIGITALISATION Perceptions of cybersecurity risks are growing: the share of survey participants that identified it as a risk of digitalisation increased to 76% from 48% in 2023. ATTITUDES TO POTENTIAL ROLE OF DLT ARE SOFTENING Market participants are eyeing the growing role for DLT in capital markets infrastructure. Some 42% of respondents believe that blockchain will become the dominant form of financial markets infrastructure. BOND MARKETS WILL LEAD THE PATH TO TOKENISATION  The likelihood of tokenisation for various asset classes is not uniform. Given the positive outcomes of numerous tokenised bond projects, it is not surprising that 65% of survey respondents believe that bonds are prime candidates. Survey participants also expect commodities (52%) and public stock (50%) to be tokenised. FASTER SETTLEMENT AND REDUCED COUNTERPARTY RISK Most notably, 74% of participants selected faster settlement, followed by reduced counterparty risk at 61%. The use of smart contracts may support these benefits as they facilitate transactions without the need for intermediaries and lower transaction costs

Interesting use case of tokenisation from Amazon marketplace, launched at SFF. Typically Amazon Marketplace sellers receive payments every 14 days, but it can stretch to 90 days under certain circumstances. These sellers account for the majority of Amazon sales. The simulation involved tokenizing these receivables and placing them on an exchange where lenders can buy them at a small discount. This kind of tokenized trade finance would allow the marketplace sellers to receive money faster. StraitsX XSGD stablecoin wrapped as Purpose Bound Money (PBM). The Promise of #Tokenized #Bonds and #Sukuk Asset tokenization could democratize access to the bond and sukuk market, traditionally seen as a playground for institutional investors and those with significant capital. By representing bonds and sukuk as tokens, and potentially breaking them down into smaller, approachable investments, banks can make it easier for more people to invest in high-quality, high-value bonds and sukuk. This inclusivity fosters a more vibrant and diverse investment landscape, and fractional ownership is one of the key benefits of tokenization for issuers and investors. Tokenization can also enhance liquidity. Digital tokens can be traded on secondary markets with greater ease and at lower costs than traditional bond and sukuk transfers, meaning a bank’s assets can be digitized and moved quickly. This increased liquidity benefits investors looking to buy or sell positions without the typical wait times and bureaucratic hurdles. Transparency and security also see significant improvements. Blockchain technology, the backbone of tokenization, provides an immutable ledger of transactions. This transparency ensures that all token transfers are traceable, reducing the risk of fraud and making the market more secure for investors. The Challenges Ahead Despite its potential, the journey towards the widespread adoption of tokenized bonds and sukuk may prove challenging. Regulatory compliance is a major hurdle, as the legal framework for tokenized securities is still evolving. Financial institutions and token issuers must navigate a complex landscape of laws and regulations, which can vary across jurisdictions. Technical integration presents another challenge. interesting to see how Deutsche Bank is building a layer 2 on top of Ethereum. In 2020, enterprises were building private chains just like in the beginning of the Internet, Microsoft and others were building private Internets. Building on top of Ethereum means summaries of transactions [I.e. hashes] are stored on Ethereum while in this case trusted and compliant validators do the actual transaction processing. The big question is if anybody will be able to use this new chain and if it will be competitive or if it will be by invitation only and/or expensive. My suggestion is to enable anybody to get an account after passing KYC and other regulatory compliance processes and to link wallets to bank accounts so you can freely [and hopefully for free] transfer your money between them. Also transaction costs should be in line with other L2 chains. Why not go the opposite and maximise value by charging for access? This is the last chance for banks to be involved in payments. Stablecoin payments are going to substitute card payments they have ultra low merchant costs. DeFi is proving that automating financial processes can bring scale and exponential lower costs. There is no Amazon of DeFi yet but if banks don't hurry up, there will be soon. Crypto and DeFi is like ecommerce and brick & mortar stores 25 years ago. Banks can become Walmart or Sears. Embrace and extend has always been the best strategy historically.
