This is not just any "hey, we are looking for a dev" post. This might be one of the most exciting engineering roles we have ever hired for. Let me explain why: I have the great privilege of being the product lead for the exceptionally brilliant Rendering Engine Team at Miro. Several months ago, we took a bold step to revamp our foundational rendering technology from the ground up, setting an ambitious vision far beyond what Miro is capable of today. Building a highly performant rendering engine for a product like Miro is not trivial though. You are dealing with an infinite 2D canvas with potentially thousands of multimedia objects, all while multiple people collaborate in real-time. We want professionals & creatives to spend the majority of their working days in Miro. Unfortunately, every lag when panning a large planning board, every jiggle effect due to low FPS when zooming out from a large planning session, and every slight delay when selecting hundreds of multimedia objects not only results in lost time but also slight frustration. It's that small, annoying feeling that something felt slightly slow, slightly not instant, slightly irritating. A products performance is not just about the time you lose; it is about the feeling this product gives you. On the other hand, we all know the feeling of delight when you do something complex in a product, and it happens instantaneously. That feeling that no matter what you do, no matter what workload you throw at an application, it will be responsive, fast, and instantaneous. This is what we envision: A rendering engine that continuously surprises you with its snappiness, making work feel light and delightful. We are looking for someone who is as equally annoyed by these issues as we are and wants to take the lead in solving them. We aim to build a rendering engine that raises the bar for what people consider possible on a web-based canvas. From Sticky Note to Solution: The Evolution of Canvas Object Types In my last post, I talked about the sticky note as the starting point for every idea. It’s simple, universal, and perfect for quick brainstorming. But as ideas grow and mature, they need more than a sticky note to reach their full potential. Visual canvas tools are introducing new, specialized object types that guide an idea from concept to execution. Here’s a quick look at just a small example of the evolution of these objects—and how each stage brings us one step closer to a fully realized solution. 1. The Idea (Sticky Note) Every great project starts as a spark of inspiration, often captured in the humble sticky note. This is where we brainstorm freely and build a foundation, no pressure or complexity—just raw ideas. 2. Task or Action (To-Do List) Once an idea shows potential, it needs structure. The Task or Action object defines next steps and turns that raw idea into something actionable. Here, we outline to-do lists, assign priority, and begin to organize the concept. 3. Jira Card (Project Integration) When an idea reaches the point of execution, it becomes a project task. In Vulcan, the Jira Card object lets us sync seamlessly with Jira, adding detail, assigning team members, and tracking progress in real-time. This step connects the idea to the broader project management system. 4. Kanban Board (Visual Workflow) With multiple tasks in motion, the Kanban Board object helps us visualize and track progress at a glance. Each card represents a task moving through stages like To Do, In Progress, and Done. It’s a clear, visual way to manage the flow of work and keep everyone on the same page. 5. Workflows & Automation (Integrated Action) Finally, Workflow & Automation objects bring it all together by automating repetitive actions and complex workflows. From triggering notifications to integrating with external tools, this is where the idea truly becomes part of a dynamic, automated process. The best product teams are leaning into this area heavily. Miro, for example, has just released a series of such native objects as part of their innovation workspace. I expect this trend to continue as the digital canvas seeks to solve upstream needs in the path from idea to execution. My former colleagues at Mural, such as the brightest of sparks Stephen Anderson, were working on the Smart Planner which is only available for enterprise customers (I guess, for now). Who can find job on LinkedIn Today: From Developer to C-Level Last week, we finished our 12th LinkedInPUMP group. With this group, we have over 150 participants and an incredibly high NPS. Here are the key conclusions from 12th Group: 1/ Developers and Analysts are in Trend Again! It was amazing to see all the analysts and developers in LinkedInPUMP group getting flooded with messages from recruiters. It’s not just 1, 2, or 5 messages each — it’s 10-20! Now I can say for sure: if you want international job offers in development and analytics, come to me! We hacked the system! 2/ C-Level can get a job only through Networking. Unfortunately, no one in Europe is eager to hire not local COO, CEO, CFO (and also Directors). The only option is proactive networking, using connections with former colleagues, including “Russian-speaking companies.” We found that many C-level professionals do not have clear positioning and personal branding when entering the international market. So by the end of the training, all our C-level participants repackage themselves and find “their niche.” We have a lot of experience in this. 3/ You can promote your Services and work in a company at the same time. What to do if you work in a company and want to earn extra money (by selling services, consulting)? It’s easy - we found a way to combine both, and the system gives very fast results. If you have the desire! 4/ Not only IT specialists can build an International Career. Here is a list of professions that have good chances for European job offers (if experience allows): Project Managers, Product Managers, all types of M&A, all types of marketing, HR (with an advantage for Talent Acquisition and Recruiters), Finance (controlling, treasury), Logistics (a bit harder, but there are options). In case you thought SaaS wasn't dead yet, here's Klarna replacing their entire CRM with AI. "There are large ongoing internal initiatives that are a combination of Al, standardization, and simplification. As an example, we just shut down Salesforce. Within a few weeks, we will shut down Workday. We are shutting down a lot of our SaaS providers, as we are able to consolidate," said Siemiatkowski on a conference call." WTF Google? Aren't you "all-in" when it comes to making PWA discovery and installation easier? 90% of all apps in the app stores could have been a PWA, but it doesn't help if you make decisions like this in the Chrome UI. Scaling culture through 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 and 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 with minimal friction. "People are not behaving as we expect" A common observation from execs in scaling companies. Let's stop for a moment. Has anyone explicitly shared the current culture? Culture, simply put, is the "way things work around here" If culture is not explicitly defined. People pick up on culture through observation: → Who gets acclaim and promotions? → Leadership values and behaviour → Who gets fired → Process However, as companies scale, observation alone breaks down: → Rapid influx of people from differing cultures can cause friction → Company leaders are less visible day to day → Opaque staffing decisions → Process misunderstood 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 Culture becomes diluted or misaligned to the original intent. Frustration all around 𝗦𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? Think carefully about your own beliefs and principles as a leadership team. What has driven your success so far? 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Several years ago the company I was working for got acquired. New CEO comes in and makes the culture we can expect explicit. This is how I run the business: • 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 and why • 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 and how they have been helpful   Furthermore they had some additional performance principals that outlined valued behaviours. The result? Do you have any anti-use-cases? The OpenCage GmbH team had a big one: Someone uploaded a video to YouTube that implied you could use their API to *track a user's phone*. The video ranked high in search, so many people watched it, and signed up for OpenCage. Sounds great, except that OpenCage doesn't support this use case. It's technically impossible. Many who tried—and failed—to track a phone's location email asking for support. Even the effort to identify these tickets and send a canned response is a lot for their small team. And then along came LLMs, which intuited from this single, popular video that OpenCage could track phones. On the surface, this seems logical: area codes in phone numbers often represent geographic areas. But my own 503 number would place me in Portland, even when I'm traveling. That's not the functionality these users want. So, OpenCage's support burden increased once again. It became difficult to distinguish real potential developer customers from those who blindly followed a chatbot's recommendations. Their solution was to see how many of the non-customers they could catch right at sign-up. In addition to four actual use cases of OpenCage, they mention a fifth: their anti-use-case. Then, they preempt the support request with a link explaining the confusion. Even better, they can help their REAL developers by knowing which of the OTHER FOUR use cases they want to accomplish.

One of the biggest challenges new Vaadin users have is wrapping their heads around building views in Java. It makes sense when you get it, but getting it can take some trial and error. Or you can skip all of that and watch Vesa Nieminen explain how he goes about constructing a view based on a design, step-by-step. So here’s the long and short of it: Rabbit R1 is a $200 piece of hardware (which happens to look cool, because Teenage Engineering is a great design studio) that says “ET phone home” for every action you take. Under the hood, it appears to be a bunch of Playwright scripts. (With the exception of “Play a random song.” This is hard coded to be a Beatles song. Which I find hilarious.) Playwright is dope. You should learn how it works. I’m not throwing shade for using tools that are dope if you’re making a dope product. I just don’t understand how they got like $300M in venture funding to make… a voice-to-text NLP processor that runs a bunch of Playwright scripts and then calls them “apps” or whatever. (A relevant limitation here is going to be the web interface, because if even one button moves, your app breaks. Hence why all the Rabbit apps constantly break.) What did we learn here today? What do you mean when you say "agent"? This is a question I often ask to set expectations with people since "agents" mean different things to different people, and they were EVERYWHERE at #reInvent this year. At its core, an "agentic workflow" is essentially an AI system—but it goes beyond a single API call to a single model. The simplest systems use Retrieval-Augmented Generation (#RAG) to supply LLMs with relevant information for the task at hand. Taking it a step further, we see "static chains": multi-component systems where each step builds on the previous to solve more complex tasks. For example, comparing two stocks might require: 1. Defining comparison points 2. Pulling information from annual reports 3. Calculating benchmarks like P/E ratios 4. Running a comparison 5. Summarizing the findings An evolution of this idea is systems where an LLM acts as a router, directing tasks to different "static chains". For instance, an investment analysis system might route a task to a bond analysis agent or a stock analysis agent, depending on the context. These are the types of agentic workloads I saw on the re:Invent floor, and they were super impressive—but they were also rigid and engineering-intensive. A small deviation from the set process, and the system could fail. At AI21 Labs, we're re-imagining these workflows with AI that adapts to different tasks and environments in real time. This is incredibly exciting because it opens up use cases that rigid systems can't handle today. Have you read any job descriptions lately? I’ve seen a few and, by and large, I think companies are selling themselves short. Nine out of ten job descriptions I see follow the same format and contain the same information:  “We are [NAME] and we sell/make/provide [COMMODITY/SERVICE] and we are really good at it. Now we want to do more and are looking for someone to join us. You will be doing [INSERT BIG LIST OF BULLET POINTS] and you need to be someone who [INSERT BIG LIST OF BULLET POINTS].” Yawn. When I have a role to fill, I don’t write a job description. I write a story. I tell the STORY of who we are, WHAT we are doing, WHY we are doing it, and HOW we’re doing it. I paint a (truthful) picture of what it’s like to work here. I talk about where we are and where we'd like to go. I describe the technologies used and what level of skill and experience might be required to be successful, and I share my thoughts on what attitudes and traits you may need to have in order to fit in and thrive. Occasionally I poke a little fun at someone who is already on the team. You know, to keep it light hearted. The point of this is that you, the applicant, having read this story, should come away with a genuine feeling (gut feel is important, so appeal to it!... more on that another time) of what it would be like to join us. The actual job description can wait - if you’re interested, let’s talk and go into more of the details. I find this highly effective, mainly because those who apply invariably say that this style of advertising a job turned their heads.
