In South Korea, pneumonia is a leading cause of death that continues to threaten public health every year. Through the tertiary hospital-based influenza surveillance system in South Korea, nasopharyngeal swab specimens were obtained from patients with unexplained cases of Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) between 2011 and 2017. After real-time PCR screening using respiratory viral panels, the samples were found negative for 16 common respiratory pathogens including adenovirus, influenza viruses, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, coronavirus, metapneumovirus, and parainfluenza viruses. The aim of this study was to investigate the patient microbiota and examine the etiology of CAP requiring hospitalization. The nasopharyngeal microbiome of adult patients during CAP was analyzed using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) on the Illumina MiSeq platform and a subsequent bioinformatics pipeline. However, the associations of HBV mediated etiologies have not been well documented. This study investigated the relationship between the three most clinically relevant IL28B SNPs (rs8099917, rs12980275, and rs12979860) with the risk of HBV/HCV infection and HCC development within Vietnamese HBV carriers. By using kinetics and allele specific real-time PCR, the study demonstrated holders of the T/G allele at SNP rs8099917 were less susceptible to HBV/HCV infection. Notably, HBV carriers with the SNP rs8099917 T/G allele were at lower risk of being transformed into HCC. Antengene (SEHK: 6996), a Qiming Venture Partners' portfolio company, presented the latest data from two clinical studies of selinexor in posters at the 2024 American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting. The company shared the primary analysis of the Phase 3 BENCH study on weekly selinexor, bortezomib, and dexamethasone (SVd) versus twice-weekly bortezomib and dexamethasone (Vd) in Chinese patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM). Last week, we had the honor to hold a seminar with National Biotechnology Research Park, Biomedical Translation Research Center, and Molecular Devices, to explore the potentials, future trends and revolution of organoids and organ-on-chips on new drug development. Hsian-Jean Chin, Director General, National Laboratory Animal Center, National Applied Research Laboratories, NARLabs said, those "human-based models" are not aim to totally replace animal models. Hong Kong Baptist University and Infinitus China Company Ltd signed a MoU last week to launch a strategic collaboration focused on research related to food as medicine. This partnership will establish the "Infinitus-Hong Kong Baptist University Joint Laboratory of Polysaccharide Research,” dedicated to investigating the health benefits and applications of herb polysaccharides. The first two research projects will be led by Prof. Simon Han Quanbin and Dr Xu Jun from the School of Chinese Medicine. They will explore the effects of polysaccharides derived from traditional Chinese herbs, such as Astragalus and Dendrobium, on lung immunity, as well as the potential of herbal polysaccharides in inhibiting intestinal polyp growth. The MOU was signed by Dr Ken Yeung, Director of Technology Translation of HKBU, and Dr Frank Ma, Vice President and Chief Science Innovation Officer of Infinitus (China). 📢 LabGenomics Establishes a Comprehensive NGS Portfolio for Cancer Reimbursement Testing, Targeting the U.S. Market LabGenomics has built a complete portfolio of next-generation sequencing (NGS) products for all selective reimbursement tests related to solid tumors and hematologic cancers. The Taiwan Biobank is the oldest and arguably most comprehensive biobank in Taiwan. Established in 2012 at Academia Sinica, its goal is to accelerate scientific discovery by providing researchers access to resources for biomedical research. The TWB’s main resource is its population cohort, which is comprised of 200,000 participants recruited from different parts of Taiwan, with most participants being between the age of 30-70. All participants have signed a broad informed consent with the choice of allowing linkage of their #biobank data with other health-related databases from the government. 💡 👨‍🔬 Breakthrough Multi-Cancer Early Detection Research Findings at Prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting 2024 in Chicago 🌎 Dr. Le Son Tran, the SPOT-MAS R&D Team leader from Medical Genetics Institute Ho Chi Minh City and Gene Solutions is set to present breakthrough findings at the upcoming prestigious oncology conference this weekend. Since 2022, Gene Solutions kicked off the largest and most comprehensive multi-center prospective study, K-DETEK, to clinically validate the diagnostic performance of SPOT-MAS - recruiting 10,027 asymptomatic individuals aged 40 years or older.
