🤩 Last week, I had the pleasure of venturing into the world of insurance - learning and speaking at #Insurtech in London. 🇬🇧 A few reflections: 💪 Insurance: Not boring, but bold. Many industries wouldn’t scale, infrastructure wouldn’t rise, and life choices wouldn’t be made without insurance as an enabler. With ~$6 trillion in global premiums, insurance is bigger than Germany’s GDP. Also it insurance has among the highest profit per ton of CO2 emitted (i.e. https://lnkd.in/evk32p6s 🎩 -tip to Robert, Carbon Gap). That is serious leverage. 🐘 AI was the elephant also in this room. Much talk centred on how #AI can not only automate claims and processes but also augment the client experience, risk prediction, and catastrophe modelling. In as data-rich and pattern-heavy an industry, AI finds fertile ground. Judging by room overflow, Tom Hulme (GV (Google Ventures)) and Adina Eckstein (Lemonade) struck a chord with their clarity on what to do with AI lemons 🍋 . 🌍 Climate change = industry change. Insurance sits at the front line of climate risk. As Paolo Mantero showed: climate events are becoming more frequent and severe. Their knock-on cost may soon make some areas uninsurable. That’s why insurers don’t just have a moral interest in climate stability; they have a balance sheet one 💶 . It was fascinating to see the high ROI of adaptation measures, from early warning systems to building codes and zoning regulations and it was encouraging that carbon removal featured in many conversations, too. 💍 Act to prevent. Scaling durable carbon removal now is an essential shot at avoiding the soaring costs of unchecked climate change. In the absence of a global carbon price, internalising the economic externality via voluntary carbon price is an effective path. I was thus glad to share the stage with Christoph Nabholz (CSO at Swiss Re) to highlight their elegant and forward-thinking approach: a rising internal carbon levy reaching $200/ton by 2030, incentivising emission reductions while financing the required durable carbon removal to meet operational net zero by 2030. At Carbonfuture we are humbled to support this through our #dMRV and multi-year partnership, i.e. https://lnkd.in/eb5qkvy9. It’s encouraging to see many insurers leading with action—like Swiss Life—and to see others even represented on stage, such as Zurich with Linda Freiner. As Allianz’s CSO aptly put it: climate has always been a priority, and now more than ever. I couldn’t agree more: in times like these, actions speak even louder than usual. 🤗 Thanks for your hospitality (and all the live music 🎷) dear insurance industry, and please shout if the above contains insanities or has gaps worth spreading! No premium will protect us if we underwrite a +3°C world. So, let's go! 👏🏼 #Insurtech #Insurance #insurtechinsights #climaterisk #riskmanagement #CDR #NetZero #Sustainability #climatechange #AI

🌟 Supplier Spotlight: VGrid Energy Systems 🌟 What if biochar could be produced exactly where it’s needed—with the flexibility to adapt to locally available biomass? Californian start-up VGrid Energy Systems has developed a solution: their patented “Bioserver”, a mobile, modular, and easily scalable biomass refinery. The system converts agricultural, forestry, and municipal waste into renewable electricity, bio-liquids, and biochar, all while removing CO₂ from the atmosphere. ⚡ Generating green electricity: VGrid’s Bioservers generate renewable electricity from residual biomass while durably removing carbon through biochar production. The generated electricity is either used directly on-site or is fed back into the California power grid, supporting a more resilient and sustainable energy system. 🌱 Fostering regenerative agricultural practices and soil health: VGrid’s bioenergy process produces biochar and bio-liquids. Farmers, golf courses, nurseries, and others use these to enrich soil, improve crop yields, and reduce water and fertilizer use. This, in turn, lessens the impact of agricultural runoff, protecting groundwater and fragile ecosystems. After five years of successful Bioserver operations, VGrid has demonstrated the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of its technology. Partnering with Carbonfuture has been an important step in expanding their role in the carbon removal industry. “With Carbonfuture MRV+, we can easily monitor our operations. The comprehensive dashboard allows us to manage deliveries, inventory, and carbon removal certificates all in one place.” says Jeff Norton, Vice President of Business Development at VGrid. 📈 With Carbonfuture MRV+ streamlining data tracking and third-party verification, VGrid is poised to scale faster and more efficiently: Over the next seven years, they aim to deploy more than 1,000 Bioservers across 80 new sites. By 2032, their operations are expected to remove over 340,000 metric tons of CO₂ through biochar carbon removal each year while generating 750,000 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity – enough to power more then 30,000 households! #Biochar #BiocharCarbonRemoval #CDR #CarbonRemoval #Sustainability #NetZero #ClimateAction

🇩🇪 Germany Sets a Global Precedent by Making Net Zero Constitutional 🇩🇪 A historic milestone for climate action: Germany has legally embedded its 2045 net-zero target into its constitution (Grundgesetz)—setting a new global benchmark for long-term climate commitments. 🌍 Why does this matter? Amid concerns that geopolitical shifts might delay net-zero ambitions, Germany is doing the opposite: locking in its 2045 target and backing it with action. 🏛️ Additionally, the Bundestag has amended its debt brake, unlocking €500 billion over 12 years, including €100 billion for climate transformation (Klima- und Transformationsfonds - KTF). 💡 Now, the focus must be on investing in solutions that make net zero a reality. Durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is essential for tackling residual emissions and reaching net zero—and Germany has a unique opportunity to lead in this growing sector. ► A thriving CDR industry could contribute €70B annually to Germany’s economy and create 190,000 high-quality jobs. ► Allocating just 5% (€5B) of the KTF to scaling durable CDR would fast-track innovation and position Germany as a global leader in climate technology. 📣 To make this happen, the Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE) has launched the Think Negative campaign: “Think Negative for a Positive Future”. 🌍 What does corporate leadership on carbon removal look like? At the first-ever Carbon Removal Spotlight, co-hosted by Carbonfuture and Economist Impact at the 10th Anniversary Sustainability Week, we tackled this head-on. 🔎 The focus? Turning carbon removal from a 'someday' ambition into a core part of net-zero strategies today. We explored three key questions: Why invest in carbon removal now? What does corporate action on carbon removal look like across different industries? How do you get started? 🔥 Key takeaway: Carbon removal is the competitive advantage companies can’t afford to ignore. ➤ It’s essential to reaching net zero. Deep emissions cuts alone won’t get us there. Leaders from JPMorganChase, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), BREITLING, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., and AstraZeneca are integrating carbon removal into their sustainability strategies—not as a future goal, but as a present-day priority. ➤ First movers gain a competitive edge. Early adopters secure supply, avoid price volatility and mitigate regulatory risks. They lead on climate credibility—while others risk playing catch-up. ➤ You don’t have to figure it out alone. Leading companies are showing the way, and can be emulated. The infrastructure—like the work we’re doing at Carbonfuture—exists to help you invest in carbon removal with confidence and with convenience, aligned with your business priorities. It was encouraging to see carbon removal emerge as a major theme across the conference. Beyond our Spotlight, we saw it featured in discussions on corporate sustainability, supply chain decarbonization, and even music event decarbonization—showing that it’s no longer a side topic but a critical component of credible net-zero strategies. 💡Ready to learn more or take action? We’ve launched "Carbon Removal for Net-Zero: A Strategic Guide for Corporate Sustainability Professionals"—your roadmap to making credible, high-impact investments in carbon removal. ➡️ Download it here: https://lnkd.in/eV8skVcv 🙏 Huge thanks to Emily Jackson-Kessler for masterful moderation and to our brilliant speakers: Henrik Stiesdal (Stiesdal), Brian DiMarino (JPMorganChase), Bas Sudmeijer(Boston Consulting Group (BCG)), Aurelia Figueroa (BREITLING), Yoshikazu Hirose (Mitsui O.S.K.
