This artwork by Aseel Ehab Saif is a product of the German-Yemeni exchange project 'Science Communication for Social Cohesion and Inclusion in #Yemen', funded by the DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. It results out of the second year of this project, in which we focused on the topic of communicating on social inclusion in Yemen through art. By showcasing various gestures in Yemeni sign language – and highlighting regional dialects –, it aims to promote openness to communication with people with hearing disabilities in Yemeni society. The signs in the artwork were developed under the guidance of Maysa Ahmed, a Yemeni activist for the rights of people with hearing disabilities. Next to the pictures displayed here, Aseel also created WhatsApp stickers with the signs displayed in the pictures and an additional one for the word ʿayb, which can be downloaded from our website: https://lnkd.in/ecAbzdhq

The project 'Lost Pages' by Abeer Aref, resulting out of our DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst-funded project 'Science Communication for Social Cohesion and Inclusion in #Yemen', focuses on child labor in Yemen, highlighting the loss of innocence and unrealized potential, emphasizing the anonymity and despair of these children through their photographs. The images, which were taken with the boys' consent, are captured through street photography and offer an unfiltered glimpse into their harsh realities. Amongst other artistic outputs, these photographs are displayed in a zine that looks like a typical school notebook in Yemen, pointing to the lost potential and interrupted future of children who have to work rather than being the chance to receive an education. Download the zine and learn more about the project on our website at https://lnkd.in/eBYSEmeW

In this article on qantara.de, our Associate Fellow Dr. Ilyas Saliba highlights the fact that in order to support civil society in the Arab world, European policymakers need to understand the specific operating conditions of organisations at the national and regional levels. Support must always be tailored to local conditions. Available in German and English: https://lnkd.in/eM66kpyM

Our President Dr. Marie-Christine Heinze has just returned from Washington DC, where she participated and engaged in several days of meetings with public institutions, international organizations and think tanks on current developments in #Yemen, the re-designation of the Houthis as FTO and the recent US airstrikes on Houthi targets. Her engagements centered on messages related to the protection of civilians, investing in sustainable development and the need for long-term strategic thinking when it comes to international engagements in the country.
