Stunning view of the partial #SolarEclipse from space! 🌒 In a partial solar eclipse, the Moon moves between Earth and the Sun, partially blocking the sunlight. While we see a shadow on the Sun from the ground, from space, it’s Earth that appears to be in the Moon’s shadow - just like in this video. Captured by EUMETSAT's Meteosat-12 satellite this morning 🛰

Info
EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space. We operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This data is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's member and cooperating states in Europe, as well as other users worldwide. The service provided by EUMETSAT helps to enhance and safeguard the daily lives of European citizens. They aid meteorologists in identifying and monitoring the development of potentially dangerous weather situations and in issuing timely forecasts and warnings to emergency services and local authorities, helping to mitigate the effects of severe weather and protecting human life and property. This information is also critical to the safety of air travel, shipping and road traffic, and to the daily business of farming, construction and many other industries. Account monitored Mon-Fri 09:00-18:00 CET. For general enquiries, please contact: press@eumetsat.int For user support, please contact: ops@eumetsat.int

African RENs have a vital role to play in #climate #research. Even though RENs are well positioned to support the climate agenda, a lack of matching investment in technology and human capital prevents them from contributing significantly. This session on climate will delve into funding strategies for scaling REN infrastructure and sustainable funding models, among other things. Do you sometimes wish the weather forecasts ☀️ 🌨️ were more accurate? A new European weather satellite is poised to revolutionize weather forecasting from polar orbit. For the EUMETSAT MetOp Second Generation mission 🛰️ we delivered e.g. the 6-meter high satellite structure. The MetOp Second Generation-A1 satellite will carry the Copernicus Sentinel-5 instrument. It will deliver data on air pollutants, ozone, and climate-related gases An instrument that flies on all MetOp-SG satellites is the GRAS instrument (GNSS Receiver for Atmospheric Sounding) - built under full Beyond Gravity responsibility. Record participation: 270 meteorologists attended yesterday's ESSL-EUMETSAT Annual Forecaster Event. For the first time since the launch of the new satellite generation (#MTG), severe weather applications for the novel #lightning imager and total #moisture imagery were presented to the wider European forecaster community. The ESSL Weather Data Displayer, available for licencing by weather services since early March, was used to analyse warning relevant cases. #ESSL #EUMETSAT #MTG #Meteorology #SevereWeather #Innovation #WeatherForecasting #Forecasting #Satellite #Europe EUMETSAT European Severe Storms Laboratory (ESSL)

🌐 Last week the World Meteorological Organization released its #StateofClimate global report, confirming that 2024 was the warmest year on record. This week sees the start of our regional reports, which are designed to inform decision-making at regional level to help protect lives and livelihoods from increasingly extreme weather and climate impacts. 🌎 The State of the Climate in #LatinAmerica and the #Caribbean will be presented on Friday 28 March at a WMO regional meeting in El Salvador 🇸🇻 To set the scene, here's a quick #dataviz reminder from Ed Hawkins of the evolution of global temperatures: every decade from the 1850s to 2020s. Data source: HadCRUT5 from Met Office (one of six datasets used by WMO for its global and regional reports.) https://lnkd.in/dFtbcPrP

🚀 Expanding the Possibilities of #PrecisionViticulture with Space Technologies! Yesterday, our team had the incredible opportunity to visit EUMETSAT – the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate, and the environment. We gained valuable insights into their mission, the evolution of satellite technology, and its impact on various industries. At first glance, viticulture—a deeply traditional sector—might seem disconnected from modern #digital space technologies. But after engaging discussions, the links became clear: 🌍 Climate Insights: EUMETSAT’s extensive historical meteorological data can help analyse the effects of #ClimateChange on vineyard productivity. 💧 Smart Irrigation: With water management becoming a pressing issue, even in Germany, integrating satellite data could be a game changer for future vineyard management. This visit reinforced the importance of cross-sector collaboration in driving #sustainability in viticulture. Who knows? One day, satellites not yet focused on agriculture may revolutionise vineyard management! We would like to thank EUMETSAT and European Space Agency - ESA for making this visit possible for us! 🍇🔭 #Innovation #AgTech #RemoteSensing #SustainableAgriculture Christine Träger-Chatterjee Peter Albert Carla Barroso Angus Palmar Dimitrios S.
