Space Safety Industry Days at ESOC/ESA in Darmstadt, 28.11.2024. It felt like a family meeting, a quickly growing family... In my opinion, within ESA's Space Safety Program (#S2P) are one of the most useful/helpful missions - for mindkind (warning and protection from asteroids, e.g. #HERA, #RAMSES) - for the resilience of its economy and defence capabilities (non-dependent warning from hazardous sun outbursts which could damage or infrastructure in Earth and in space, e.g. #VIGIL) - all around #SpaceDebris (mitigation, removal, space traffic management, up to in-orbit measurement of small debris particles <1mm, e.g. via #SAILOR) and others within the #COSMIC program, - including managing its measures complying -> to the ESA regulation "maximum 5 years deorbit time" and -> to the - meanwhile international - #ZeroDebrisCharter. Not respecting the space debris issue means soon "GAME OVER" for us space industry and for mankind by no more daily use of space infrastructure. For the next CMin2025 a total budget of - in my view - 1 billion Euro for 3 years (should be 5-7% of total) would be well invested money...for European sovereignty and global mankind. Thank you very much, dear ESA Space Safety Office within the ESA Operations, Engineering & Space Safety Directorate for this very efficient event.

"It's magic to get it all together, and it's a lot of work" - it's a quote from Josef Aschbacher, DG of European Space Agency - ESA, from his latest interview with Space.com. Great quote which actually summarises everything hard that we're doing in space. Cause you know, it's not only hard to get the hardware working, it's hard to make a software which will not break the OBC during the update to the satellite, it's hard to manage the project, it's hard to do AIT when you're doing things that were never done in your part of the world... In the end, it's magic. When a time flies, this should turn to the daily, boring job, but we're constantly pursuing new things. So magic stays with us. Nice picture of this "magic" is the new Ariane 6, that will launch soon. Let' s hope that Europe will manage to do projects not only as big and "old-fashioned" like Ariane 6, but also some smaller ones, faster, more agile like recent Ideas call for the Moon missions. Let's see where this magic brings us! P.S. Guess who's going to have their camera's on Ariane 6? You guessed correctly - it's Scanway Space :) Image credits: ESA

The search is on worldwide for environmentally friendly alternatives to hydrazine (N2H4), which is used in spaceflight as a propellant for satellite propulsion systems. #DLR in #Lampoldshausen research has resulted in two promising products that are now being tested in space and brought to market. Our #spin-off ISPTech and our colleagues from DLR-Institut für Raumfahrtantriebe are presenting two technologies responding to the space market's need to develop more #cost-effective and #reliable propulsion solutions. One of the two technologies developed, HyNOx, is characterized by high performance, #safe #handling and low costs. The second technology, a self-igniting propellant combination called HIP_11, is patented and was also developed by #DLR. Both innovations complement each other: HyNOx is ideal for smaller and lighter satellites or spacecraft, while HIP_11 offers clear advantages for larger and heavier spacecraft. Globular clusters are collections of hundreds of thousands of stars held together by gravity. Located about 7,800 light-years from Earth, NGC 6397 is the second-closest globular cluster to us. Together with other globular clusters it orbits in the disc of the Milky Way, where the majority of stars are located. Globular clusters are among the oldest objects in the Universe. This is why they contain many clues about the history and evolution of their host galaxies, like this one for the Milky Way. The challenge is that it is typically difficult to observe an entire globular cluster in just one sitting. Their centers contain large volumes of stars, so many that the brightest ‘drown out’ the fainter ones. Their outer regions extend a long way out and contain mostly low-mass, faint stars. It is the faint stars that can tell us about previous interactions with the Milky Way. Usually I don't like this type of posts, but today I want to share a nice story with you of Amelie. 🦸‍♀️ Roughly one year ago, I received one of the best "cold outreaches" from Amelie, a 15 year old school student, interested in space. Extraordinarily well structured, she outlined about her stratospheric ballon project, its estimated results and relevance for science, her personal story & motivation, and of course why we are the right company to support it. And look- one year later the ballon was successfully launched :-) Why do I share this.. 1. Cold outreaches can be nice if done right. 2. I think we need more Amelies, in science and start-ups, who take the extra mile to bring their project to life. 3. STEM is cool, just look at the video! And here is a quote of Amelie, for everyone who is hesitating to enter the space industry: "What fascinates me is that even a group of pupils can be able to approach the vast and seemingly intangible world of space and work scientifically." 🚀🚀🚀

Some might think that #GPS #Spoofing never changes. That couldn't be further from the truth. Last week a GPS spoofing site was destroyed in the Black Sea reducing some attacks in the area. But a few days later, new spoofed areas began to appear near Ukraine. Today there is a massive change in the Middle East. #Spirent is here to help. We can detect spoofing in real-time to notify pilots, airlines, and ATC. We can also replicate it in our test equipment enabling manufacturers to develop new procedures, mitigations, and solutions.

On our way to Brussels with the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. team for our quarterly face-to-face meeting of the VenSpec suite on the European Space Agency - ESA EnVision mission. Combining collaborative tools for our documentation, monthly virtual meetings of the whole team and weekly meetings of sub-units with these quarterly in-person meetings has been so far very successful. Certain things are easier discussed over a cup of coffee than in an endless email thread. Plus it is good to know how easy or difficult it is to reach each of our consortium partners to allow for proper time allocation in our AIV schedule. And as consortium lead it is just nice to see everyone in a room with enthusiasm engaged in technical discussions. #TeamWork #VenusProgram #EnVision

Chief Modeling and Simulation Office (CMSO) and United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Establishes the Modeling & Simulation Community of Practice (M&S CoP) SAF/AA Approved Release on 9 Dec. 2024 Great News! The USAFA Dean (BGen Letendre) and the DAF CMSO (Mr. Tempalski) officially signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that will establish the CMSO-funded Modeling & Simulation Community of Practice (M&S CoP) at the Air Force Academy. This MOA will begin the process of several collaborative activities to develop a highly skilled and future-ready Aimen and Guardians to shape the future of the DAF’s M&S modernization strategy, driving disruptive advancements in M&S technology through education, research, and experiential learning. Through this MOA, the CMSO will be working with USAFA leadership and fostering alignments in the Colorado Springs community more broadly (e.g., Catalyst Campus, the Garden of the Gods Innovation Hub, Space Foundation, and local Air Force and Space Force organizations).

💻⚙️ Study of the features of permanent and usual reverse-engineering methods of details of complex shapes 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dStxicZ7 © Kateryna Maiorova, Oleksandra Kapinus, Oleksandr Skyba 🏢 National Aerospace University -'Kharkiv Aviation Institute'​ The subject of the #study is sustainable #reverseengineering and conventional reverse engineering of #aviationequipment (AE) samples. The object of the study is the #geometricaccuracy of the extracted portrait of a part of a complex shape in comparison with the constructed analytical standard (AS). The work is aimed at researching the methods of sustainable reverse engineering and conventional reverse engineering on the example of the digitization of the box of the AE #steeringmachine, chosen as a part of a complex shape. For this, a portrait of the "*.stl" and AS format file was created and compared by performing a control operation with the determination of the time spent. A structural and technological analysis of the box of the AE steering machine was carried out, which showed that the box has through holes of various diameters (from 10 to 41.6 mm) and shapes (square, trapezoidal, round); thin walls between holes (up to 1.6 mm); right angles and their rounding radii (up to 1–4 mm); the thickness of the body walls is 2.4 mm, etc. 3D scanner – ARTEC SPACE SPIDER (Luxembourg) was selected and scanning was performed. According to the analysis of research methods of reverse engineering, it was established that the use of permanent and conventional reverse engineering allows, in the first case, to #quicklymanufacture a part by 3D printing or milling on CNC machines, and in the second case, to create its AS with the provision of the specified geometric accuracy. The difference in time between permanent and normal reverse engineering was 8 hours in favor of the former. Control of the ideal portrait according to the AS of the AE steering machine body showed the maximum deviations from –0.30 mm to +0.23 mm and the minimum deviations from –0.04 mm to +0.08 mm. The smallest indicators were observed on vertical and horizontal planes, and the largest - in cities with plane slopes, corners and small radii. This made it possible to establish that the existing capabilities of the #GeomagicDesignX software for correcting the received portrait of the "*.stl" format file currently do not guarantee the provision of geometric accuracy requirements (up to ±0.5 mm) for the manufacture of an experimental part of a complex shape – the AE steering machine body with 3D printing. "MIL-SPEC" and "LOW-COST" are two very different paths. Achieving MIL-SPEC at a low cost is extremely challenging (and even nuts). A MIL-SPEC system cannot be truly low-cost but can be cost-effective through economies of scale (producing in large volumes). And the largest expense associated with a MIL-SPEC system is the cost of ownership of the test itself. One way to lower the cost of ownership is by using the concept of "platforming," i.e., design reuse across product families and introducing Mil-spec standards (810, 461, 889 etc.) from the start. Mil-Spec doesn’t tell you "how to design," but rather "how to test." It doesn't dictate the design itself but explains how to stress a system that satisfies a particular Mil use-case. Systems engineering is by far the only tool that can manage such complexities by modeling requirements for Mil-Spec from the beginning and using traceability to verify design, while modeling the cost structure as well. #systemsengineering #milspec #systemsarchitecture
