But not in the way that MElon sells other people's ideas and visions as his own. And it's a pretty big YES. Affordable humanoid robots have the potential to revolutionize our society. Infrastructure could remain tailored to humans. If necessary, people could continue to work while the bot is being repaired, upgraded or whatever. Nicely demonstrated by the University of Tokyo with their chauffeur bot. Even vintage cars could participate in networked and autonomous mobility. https://lnkd.in/eFzWiDZg But the biggest revolution will be in the liberation of people. Instead of "paying" a plumber bot, garden bot or whatever bot for a service, the personal humanoid robots will simply "watch and learn" an iFixit how to, a repair manual, or a YouTube video. Thus, all the daily stuff that the person does not want to do (but can) is outsourced to the personal robot. So all the daily stuff that people don't want to do (but can) is outsourced to their personal assistant. What people do with the freed up time is up to them. But it will work the same way as with media consumption. The smart ones will get smarter and the stupid ones... well. But what should definitely not happen is that a sociopath with far too much money and a god complex has access to your personal robots. Just as he can (and does) put your Tesla or Starlink into maintenance mode if he doesn't like you, it would be dangerous if an army of "his" robots organized a new January 6th. Globally. Just like Pinky and the Brain decide for world domination....

Start-ups in Europe: a light at the end of the tunnel - finally!    This article by Nadine Schimroszik in Handelsblatt gives reason for hope for the tech ecosystem, as it summarises a development that has been tentatively emerging for some time: The number of new #start-ups in Germany is growing again, by 17 per cent, as shown by a comparison of the first quarter of 2024 with the same quarter of the previous year.   💡It is particularly interesting to see that most investments are being made in AI. An unmistakable sign that they continue to be a driver of innovation for the German startup ecosystem.   We recently came to a similar conclusion with my team, as part of our analysis of the German startup landscape. Our conclusion: more and more funding are being mobilised for ♻️ #Greentech business ideas that are based on AI-based technologies and have a positive impact on our planet. Many thanks to BIFOLD fellow Prof. Stefan Haufe for his lecture as part of the Colloquium Series. Stefan Haufe is a professor of computer science and head of the UNIML group at Technische Universität Berlin in a joint appointment with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt Berlin (PTB). In addition, he heads the European Research Council (ERC) funded Braindata Group at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. His research is centered around the development and validation of signal processing, inverse modelling and ML techniques for neuroimaging and other medical data. During the BIFOLD Colloquium he discussed the use of ML based products in medicine and other high-risk domains in the EU. These applications will soon be regulated by the AI Act, demanding "to enable users to interpret the system’s output and use it appropriately". This need for transparency is seemingly addressed by the field of "explainable AI" (XAI). In his talk, he asked what practically relevant questions current XAI methods can systematically address and, consequently, what role XAI can be anticipated to play when it comes to quality assurance and certification of ML products. Stefan Haufe formulated a minimal requirement on XAI that is implicitly underlying many of its intended interpretations and used a minimal model to show how easily this requirement is unmet, leading to misinterpretations. Finally, he proposed benchmarks to assess "explanation correctness".

🔹 🔷 🔹 Can Industrial AI be a cure against the gradual deindustrialization of Germany? 🔹 🔷 🔹 The Pioneer, one of the leading German political and economic media, has released an article I wrote about the potential impact of Industrial AI yesterday. Germany with its rich tradition in engineering and industrial solutions is well placed to leverage AI to fuel the next wave of industrial innovation. A race that is still not run - as opposed to GenAI that is dominated by the large US tech giants and LLMs that are already commoditizing. A race that will likely leave room for several new German unicorns that can add to the industrial innovation process - ideally in a cooperation with established industrial players such as BMW, Mercedes, Siemens or Bosch. But it will require a significantly better availability of venture capital all the way from inception to a profitable business as well as a targeted industrial development policy to leverage this opportunity. Time for the industrial giant Germany to shed the sluggishness of recent years and remember the entrepreneurial spirit of its industrial forefathers such as Benz, Siemens, Bosch, Zeiss or Bayer. 🚀If you're on campus at TU Wien - Fakultät für Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik - ETIT on Wednesday, June 19th, join us for an insightful presentation titled "Monte Carlo Simulations of Carrier Mobility in Transition Metal Dichalcogenides: Impact of Temperature and Density" by the renowned Prof. Karol Kalna. 🚀 🗓 19.06.2023 🕒 14:00 📍 Institute for Microelectronics, Seminar room CD 05 20 This talk will explore the impact of degeneracy and screening on low-field electron mobility and high-field drift velocity in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The talk will discuss means to model full screening of scattering events, essential in these atomically thin materials, using ensemble Monte Carlo (EMC). Screening is key to the non-monotonic behavior of mobility with carrier concentration in TMDs like MoS2 and WS2. The highest electron mobility is observed at 77 K and a carrier concentration of 5x10^12 cm^-2, influenced by screening effects in the K valleys. At higher concentrations, mobility dropped due to additional scatterings in the upper Q valleys. The electron drift velocity at high fields was affected by remote substrate polar phonon (SPP) scattering in the K valleys, acting as an energy relaxation mechanism. This study provides valuable insights into the electronic transport properties of 2D TMD materials, paving the way for future advancements in TMD device technology. About the Speaker: Prof. Karol Kalna received his M.Sc. in Solid-State Physics and Ph.D. in Condensed Matter from Comenius University, Bratislava, in 1990 and 1998, respectively. He worked as a Research Scientist at the Slovak Academy of Science and later as a Research Assistant at the University of Glasgow. From 2007 to 2012, he held an EPSRC Advanced Fellowship for pioneering III–V MOSFETs. In 2010, he became a Senior Lecturer and, in 2014, Associate Professor at Swansea University, where he established the Nanoelectronic Devices Computational Group. Promoted to full professor in 2019, he has over 270 publications, 19 invited talks, and has served on various program committees. He is also an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. By developing efficient methods to extract oxygen from the lunar soil they discovered a novel method to produce green iron (and other metals) very energy/cost-efficiently, opening a great potential for the steel industry to decarbonize their value chain without any "green premium". To make just one amendment: In the long run, the survival of all life on our home planet depends on our will and capabilities to become a star-faring civilization. As "four billion years from now, the increase in Earth's surface temperature will cause a runaway greenhouse effect, (...) heating Earth's surface enough to melt it. My ask to you:  𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝘁. Having talked to many people that suffered a burnout, my observation is that it can be tremendously helpful to get a nudge from people that care about you. It is a common burnout symptom to “try to keep pushing through” and “take care of one self, after X, Y, Z is finished” -> this often significantly prolongs the healing process. Be there for the people you care about and encourage them to take care of themselves now and not when it’s too late. I’m also here for anyone that wants to talk 1:1 about their experience or ask questions. Please feel free to reach out. Happy holidays to all of you!

𝙒𝙝𝙮? 💡Even though women make 50% of our population, only 2 out of 10 women found a company in Germany. 💰Only 2% of Venture Capital goes into female founded companies. 👩🏻‍💻Only 15% of senior partners in VC firms are women. 📑 In the Innovation Agenda of the Startup-Verband we set the objective that every third startup in Germany should have a female co-founder by 2030. It’s always nice to be back at Technische Universität München - and hard to believe it’s already close to seven years since I started my own journey at the university. Thanks to Anna Efa, Eckehard Steinbach and the TUM Venture Labs team for the invitation and the chance to share insights into all things autonomous driving, our approach at driveblocks, the technology behind it as well as the business models and strategies around it. The key messages of the talk were: 💡While autonomous driving leverages a lot of artificial intelligence, safety is paramount and can’t be compromised. This changes a lot of the development dynamic compared to „standard“ AI. 💡 Data collection and management is a much bigger part of the efforts required - this has to be considered from a technical as well as from a business model point of view. 💡 We focus on early commercial deployments of the technology in industrial and commercial vehicle applications. This helps in growing the technology as well as the business and working with the certification bodies on the regulation aspects. Wenn ich sowas jemandem zutraue, dann Karpathy. "The teacher still designs the course materials, but they are supported, leveraged and scaled with an AI Teaching Assistant who is optimized to help guide the students through them. This Teacher + AI symbiosis could run an entire curriculum of courses on a common platform. If we are successful, it will be easy for anyone to learn anything, expanding education in both reach (a large number of people learning something) and extent (any one person learning a large amount of subjects, beyond what may be possible today unassisted). Our first product will be the world's obviously best AI course, LLM101n. This is an undergraduate-level class that guides the student through training their own AI, very similar to a smaller version of the AI Teaching Assistant itself. After getting some sleep, I would like to add a few thoughts.... First of all, many thanks and kudos for Hendrik Baier, Mark Keane, Sarath Sreedharan and Silvia Tulli for organizing the XAI for SDM Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik (LZI) seminar! The location was inspiring, the people were open-minded and the schedule took care that we converge on time (up to the minute 😉 ). This experience strengthens the effort to mature the research field of Explainable AI for Sequential Decision Making by building a community across domains, levels of expertise, and continents. The unique characteristics of temporal interactions between AI algorithms and human users and possibly other intelligent agents make this XAI domain, in my opinion, exciting and impactful for society. Looking forward to seeing how the topics raised will develop and am enthusiastic to see how collaborations will evolve. Last, but not least, thanks to Christina Schwarz for taking care of all administrative details (big and small). #XAI #human-AI interactions #AI #Explainable AI

The Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF is funding two projects of the Institute of Computer Science, University of St.Gallen, which deal with #AI and #softwareengineering. The aim is to improve data security and privacy. The project ‘Hyper-Representations: Learning from Populations of Neural Networks’ by Prof. Dr. Damian Borth aims to improve trustworthiness of AI. Instead of investigating individual models, the project is focussing on populations of neural networks.
