How does India deliver “Care” to rural communities through Digital Health? The mission of an ideal Digital Health Solution should be to deliver hospital-grade care, anytime and anywhere across India & the globe. The Solution should enable multiple health screens & deliver high-quality care regardless of whether the rural community has a local Doctor or a trained Nurse or whether they have power or WiFi, etc. While challenges like power & WiFi can be addressed through technology, how does one deliver health screens & diagnostics without the presence of a local Doctor or Nurse? Enter the ASHA Worker. THE most critical “Non-Technology” component of our Digital Health Solution. It is the Asha worker who ensures that all tasks related to creating a patient profile, capturing patient symptoms, and measuring patient vitals, are completed efficiently despite the unavailability of qualified medical professionals. The Asha workers also visit patient’s homes to provide door-to-door care – especially for older patients with mobility issues and for expectant mothers who may not be able to visit a clinic. And finally, there’s an emotional element to delivering good quality “patient care” that cannot be fulfilled by ANY technology, and which is warmly delivered by the Asha worker. The Asha workers also need to be provided with a digital health solution that has advanced telemedicine capabilities but is extremely easy to use. That was the design mantra for the RHEMOS Health Station. India’s smallest & easy-to-use rural care solution. India's Venture Capital Ecosystem needs Maturity to deal with Deep Tech Ventures. To inculcate this step up government needs to incentives founders engaged in setting up AI Labs that focus on development of India / Asia specific models. The founders, themselves, will have to engage with VC system to make them understand the life cycle of such ventures which itself is evolving. VCs need to take cue from those markets which have already invested in such deep tech ventures and learn from them. All the stakeholders will have to come forward and make this happen if India has to capitalize on the massive opportunity to leapfrog in the world of AI enabled future.

Not sure how many of you have issued your ABHA card and used it, but it seems promising. India's Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) is a digital health initiative aimed at transforming healthcare delivery. Launched in 2020, ABHA assigns a unique 14-digit health ID to every Indian citizen, serving as a centralized repository for their health records. This digital health passport promises seamless access to healthcare services, reduces administrative burden, and empowers patients to take control of their health. As of 2023, over 50 crore Indians have registered for ABHA, and the number continues to grow rapidly. By connecting patients with healthcare providers across the country, ABHA has facilitated telehealth consultations, improved disease management, and reduced out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. Investment no:9 💪 The COVID pandemic left a deep impression on the entire civilisation as we know it. One of the early speed breakers in fighting this pandemic was screening and diagnosis. I still remember diagnostic chains struggling to have screening agents look at large mass of symptomatic cases. While at a99 we have largely not looked at health tech or med tech as potential investment opportunities the need for screening solutions across the globe and especially in India was something our research threw up quite regularly. When we came across the EzeRx opportunity things seem to be falling in place. Not only was Partha Pratim Das Mahapatra and the EzeRx team were building tech enabled products at the screening stage, but were looking to disrupt the non invasive testing/screening space as well. This also fitted our thesis of manufacturing and investing into tier 2 - tier 3 cities for the Indian growth century. EzeRx already has SUN PHARMA as lead investors in the company. We thank them for their support in getting us invested into the business. M&A and turnaround of healthcare facilities!   Took the Masterclass on 28 September.   India is the fastest growing major economy. It is the fifth largest economy and the third largest in terms of PPP. Healthcare industry is one of the biggest employers employing ~7.5 million people. Current size of the healthcare industry is $372 billion and is expected to increase to $638 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 16-17%. India still spends less than 5% of its GDP on healthcare, as against the OECD countries 8-10% and the US a whopping 20%.   Most legacy providers are consolidating aggressively and almost 30000 crores has been invested over the last 4 years with some mega deals have also been signed, powered by PE firms. Part of this investment could be used to extend delivery to Tier2/3 towns wherein the care delivery remains abysmal.   Integration of the newly acquired healthcare facilities (brownfield projects) becomes paramount for the providers/ PE firms to cerate value for their stakeholders. It entails design and execution of a prudent comprehensive business strategy.   Greenfield healthcare projects present a unique challenge to operationalize and turn profitable since all expenses are front loaded. In the absence of comprehensive strategy, turnaround is well-nigh impossible.   I’ve brought out key highlights of the same during my masterclass. India has its own unique set of positions, we are the most populous country, with increased life expectancy, and a significant population with low age (and surely we need them all healthy and productive). Our healthcare needs are also growing - with more diseases, lower per capita coverage of healthcare facilities and insurance, late-stage detections, and costly therapeutics, to name just a few general ones. The last paragraph mentions how delivery systems and tech companies will drive digitalization in the US, and this is surely applicable to India too.  Look at the way our digitalization is working well - Aadhaar card, Indian Railways Ticketing, etc. Let us work together.

This can be achieved by establishing fast-track pathways for low-risk technologies, while ensuring robust safety measures remain in place. Regulatory Sandboxes: Creating regulatory sandboxes – safe spaces for testing and piloting innovative solutions – would allow startups to experiment and gather valuable data without the burden of full regulatory compliance. Funding the Future of Healthcare: Targeted Venture Capital Investments: While private funding exists, it often prioritizes established companies. The government can establish targeted venture capital funds specifically for promising HealthTech startups, especially those focusing on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, or addressing critical public health needs. Grant Programs for Early-Stage Startups: Early-stage startups often struggle to secure funding. Government grant programs can provide crucial seed funding to nurture promising ideas and help startups reach the stage of attracting venture capital. Data Sharing for Deeper Insights: Standardized Electronic Health Records (EHRs): The government can invest in developing a national, interoperable EHR system. This would empower patients to control their data while enabling secure data sharing between healthcare providers and startups, accelerating research and development of AI-powered solutions. Open Data Initiatives: The government can create a secure platform for researchers and startups to access anonymized health data, fostering innovation and collaboration.
