ShareAction's Corporate Climate team will be in Oslo on May 28th to challenge Yara International on its emissions targets at the company’s AGM, having a filed a shareholder resolution this week alongside Cardano, Ethos Foundation (Switzerland), PGGM Investments, and Greater Manchester Pension Fund. Yara is a leading global producer of ammonia and nitrogen fertilisers. Fertiliser production accounts for a staggering 5% of global GHG emissions and is a significant contributor to air and water pollution, and biodiversity loss. Yara’s total emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3 amounts to roughly 63 million tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) each year – about what you’d expect from 16 coal-fired power plants over the same period.  The vast majority of Yara-relevant emissions are scope 3 (i.e. downstream), occurring when the nitrogen fertilisers they manufacture are applied to agricultural fields. This process generates nitrous oxide, an extremely potent greenhouse gas which is over 250 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Their upstream emissions are significant too, though, and the extraction and processing of raw materials and fuel required for fertiliser production generates over 9 million tonnes of CO2e per year alone. Yara’s current targets do not include any formal net-zero commitments and, although the company has set near-term targets for their scope 3 emissions, they exclude key aspects of the company’s emissions profile and thus are badly misaligned with the ambitious pathways required to stabilise our climate. For this reason, we and our co-filers are asking Yara's board to implement comprehensive, science-based targets across all scopes, including up- and downstream scope 3. This resolution is the latest stage of a lengthy engagement process with Yara, as well as many other companies across the chemicals sector, to improve this critical sector's ambition on emissions reduction. I consider this paper a premature Christmas gift! The collaborative effort of a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) agriculture team as well as solar energy experts of BayWa r.e. Global r.e. provides results that should make everyone hopeful🌈: We show that the much-needed transition to #regenerativeagriculture can benefit greatly from a #solarbooster. 📢Farmer profits can double or triple during the transition to regenerative agriculture, if they also engage in Agri-PV on about 10% of the land they farm. This is a very significant finding. It is modeled for three different farm sizes in Germany. Of course, real-life results will differ farm by farm, project by project. But the order of magnitude with which revenue from solar leases & services and/ or investment boost the farm profits during the agricultural transition makes this a very attractive option to consider. The results show that there is at least a quintuple win-win-win-win-win: ✅Farmers win, obviously, from increased profits and reduced financial risk of their transition to regen Ag ✅Soil health & fertility wins, improving also drought resilience and reducing erosion risk ✅Green electricity production wins, providing carbon free power to increasing demand ✅Solar developers and investors (which can also be farmers, co-ops or communities) win as well ✅Rural communities win, if we design systems in a way that benefit rural value creation   What a great perspective for 2025 – let us roll this out!  📢   Thank you for this great collaboration Benjamin Subei, Paul Plötner Max Havermeier and #TorstenKurth of Boston Consulting Group (BCG) for the agricultural modelling. Just a couple of months ago, Prof. Dr. Edenhofer, Director of PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and I had an intense debate about the responsibilities companies must confront after #COP28. Now, we find ourselves facing an unprecedented water crisis - one that threatens not only ecosystems but the future of humanity. The global water cycle is out of balance, putting billions of lives and livelihoods at risk. The Global Commission on the Economics of Water (GCEW) warns that without immediate, collective action, we could lose essential resources like clean water, food, and climate stability. The impacts are already severe: dwindling water supplies in regions like India and China, crop failures, and communities falling deeper into poverty. But there is still hope if we act together - globally and urgently. We need to explore every option to restore balance, from policy reforms to innovative solutions that transform how we manage and use water. Innovation is crucial, but it must be implemented on a large scale and across borders. From water-saving technologies to smarter agriculture and better governance, we have the tools to support vulnerable communities in adapting to this crisis. Together, we can protect the water cycle and ensure a just and sustainable future for all.

AlterCOP was a first of its kind event: bringing the COP's topics to the public and involving local experts in engaging, training and mobilizing all good wills for change. I chose to lead the Resilience and Adaption to climate change agenda, as I found the topic often improperly covered, if at all. We often see climate disasters and lament afterward on the lack of preparation, blaming the lack of funds, of education or just political courage... Little is said on the tools and methods available today to minimize the impact of this new reality. No mention either that is is cheaper to get ready than the disaster itself. Some will argue that we are lacking data to measure both the probability of occurrence and the cost of the disaster to justify the adaption cost, and that the resources and know-how are scarce is available at all... Mic drop Thomas Kolster. Short-termism generates exactly the results we don’t want. Decline, decay, and degeneration. Think about that term “degeneration.” If we want to build a world that supports the next generation, we have to be prepared to make sacrifices now. First thing to go, the mindset of the big payout. If we’re all motivated by the next big payout. The one just around the next revenue cycle, sale, or liquidity event, where is the space for long-term thinking that builds a world beyond our life time? That’s real legacy.

Great news from PepsiCo!😊 “Global manufacturer PepsiCo has confirmed that its beverage plant in the Basque Country in Spain will be its first site to become net-zero emissions in operation by 2025.” PepsiCo’s overarching climate strategy is to reduce emissions from its direct operations by 75% and its indirect impact by 40% by 2030, building toward a net-zero target set for 2040. Recycle is the last option. 🤝And finally my favorite Point 14 and 7: You are not too small to take responsibility and meaningful action. We are all in it together.
