🌍 Migration Trends in Italy, Greece, and Spain in 2024 🔹 Italy saw a sharp drop in arrivals, but the proportion of those missing or perishing at sea increased. 🔹 Greece recorded its highest arrivals since 2019, peaking in the last quarter. 🔹 Spain experienced a surge, especially via the Western African Atlantic Route. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gtbPbzxq Migration routes are shifting—what’s driving these changes? Info
Data are key to inform migration governance, improve programming and promote a better public understanding of migration. Timely data on migration are often scarce, making it difficult for decision-makers to develop effective migration policies. Even when migration statistics do exist, policymakers may not make full use of them, because data are often scattered between different stakeholders and between different countries. Sharing data effectively is often just as important as collecting data. Poor presentation of migration data can contribute to misperceptions about migration, and can distort public opinion. Better analysis and communication of the data are needed to promote a balanced debate on migration issues.

📉 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 2024 🔹Fewer people arrived in Europe last year compared to 2023, but the risks remained high, with many lives lost at sea. 🔹The Eastern Mediterranean was the most-used route, and the main nationalities arrived overall are Syrian Arab Republic, Mali and Afghanistan . 🔹Asylum applications in the EU also decreased in 2024. Meanwhile, new policies—like Spain’s plan to grant legal status to more migrants—are shaping the future of migration in Europe. https://lnkd.in/gtbPbzxq What do these trends mean for the future? Let’s discuss in the comments below. 👇 IOM Europe and Central Asia | IOM Global Office Brussels

🌍 Women in Displacement: What Do We Need to Know? 💜 On International Women’s Day, let’s highlight a key issue—how gender shapes displacement solutions. 📊 Insights from our PROGRESS flagship report: 🔹 Female-headed households are more likely to return—unless they have vulnerable members, then they tend to stay. 🔹 Livelihood barriers: Only 12.2% work in skilled jobs, while 47.1% have no income at all. 🔹 Safety: 95% of displaced families feel safe—including women-led households. On International #WomensDay, here are 3 key facts about gender and migration: 1️⃣ 48% of international migrants are women—that’s 146 million female migrants worldwide. While this share has remained stable over time, regional differences persist—ranging from 42% in Asia to 52% in Europe. (UN DESA, 2025) 2️⃣ 74% of registered trafficking victims from 2002 to 2023 were women and girls. While male victims are increasingly identified, women and girls remain disproportionately affected. (CTDC, 2025) 3️⃣ 38.1 million women and girls were internally displaced due to conflict, violence, or disasters by the end of 2023—over half of all IDPs. (IDMC, 2024) Access to reliable migration data is key to understanding the experiences of migrant women, their contributions, challenges, and the barriers they face. Let’s ensure their voices are heard. 📊 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g6Rx7A5E #ForAllWomenandGirls

📊 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭. Today, the 56th UN Statistical Commission is reviewing revised recommendations on international migration and temporary mobility statistics—an essential step toward filling critical data gaps on short-term and circular migration. Why does this matter? Without accurate, timely data, migration policies risk being reactive instead of proactive. These updates will help governments track temporary movements—such as seasonal workers, students, and cross-border commuters—more effectively. IOM is committed to supporting this effort through its Global Data Institute and worldwide data networks. 🌍#UN56SC #MigrationStats #UNStats | United Nations Statistics Division | Follow the discussion and stay tuned for updates📺 https://webtv.un.org Read more about how improved migration data standards can shape better policies 👇

Temporary #migration such as circular movements are increasingly shaping today’s migration landscape. But without timely data, we’re essentially flying blind. Accurately tracking these movements is crucial for creating smarter, more effective policies on visas, work, housing, and more. As governments and partners gather for the annual session of the UN Statistical Commission, I’m encouraged to see a strong focus on: 🔷Making migration data more relevant 🔷Ensuring it's timely and available, and 🔷Fostering partnerships to enhance data efficiency. By understanding who’s moving, why they’re moving, and how long they stay, governments can act faster and make more informed decisions. Investing in better migration data means stronger migration management and ultimately, better outcomes for everyone involved. 📢 To generate actionable, data-driven insights that improve the lives of the most vulnerable children on the move, IDAC Secretariat members UNHCR and the OECD will hold a datathon in April 2025. Organized within the framework of IDAC, the event challenges researchers, data scientists, policymakers and students to harness the wealth of data available in UNHCR's Microdata Library in order to identify trends and propose solutions that address the challenges faced by forcibly displaced and stateless children. By translating complex datasets into meaningful narratives, the datathon acts as a platform for storytelling that can inform policy and advocacy. Sign up to join the upcoming webinar on 27 February, which will provide details about the datathon, datasets and how to participate - https://lnkd.in/dWGSsS85 Find more details here - https://lnkd.in/gGSmuJCS and https://lnkd.in/e5y49b7G Eurostat European Commission IOM - UN Migration IOM Data OECD - OCDE OECD Statistics UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR Data UNICEF
