The Good Deal 🤝 I have been a professional for 20 years and have been in more negotiations than I want to count. Selling and buying, signing customers, defining discounts, setting the right team, employment contracts – both as an employee and as an employer - and for the last 6 years as an entrepreneur building Agrain by Circular Food Technology.   🤔 Recently I have begun to wonder what really makes a good deal?   For some people, it is clearly about winning, but winning as an objective, makes it about power. I win over you – now I have power over you. But is that really a good deal?   I don’t think it is a good deal. When someone wins - someone also loses, and that is unhealthy in any relationship. Just look at nature – we, the human race, have been “winning” over nature for a long time, and now our planet is suffering 🌍   My sister, Barbara Riemann, who works as a Key Account Manager, once said to me, that a deal is only good when both sides of the table are happy. I think this is very wise 💡 Especially if we take the effort to understand that, what makes me happy, is not necessarily what makes you happy.   In my experience, the key elements of the good deal are, fairness, respect, and a bigger perspective than yourself. We must always strive to understand and acknowledge our opponent, why does he or she have a different perspective, and how can we mitigate the differences?   There are many negotiation strategies and concepts and consultant that will offer to teach you the art of negotiation and how to win the deal. Celebrating the fear of losing the zero-sum game 🥊 I suggest a different approach; ask yourself what makes both sides of the table happy? How does that feel in your gut? Maybe a negotiation could be a collaboration in finding exactly that construct, where both side of the table is happy 👏   Please read this with an open mind, I am not a researcher or a professor of something elaborate. I am a real-life-business-doer, and this is just reflections occupying my mind. 3️⃣ tips to drive more impact from your Board Meetings 👇 We have received a lot of great feedback on our way of doing board meetings So good that multiple elements have been added as best practice at some prestigious universities and implemented in a couple of Denmarks biggest companies 🏢 It is not rocket science, but here a few tips based on our learnings: 1️⃣ Video Material as preparation 🎥 Before the board meeting starts everyone should know what to discuss (Agenda) & have the needed context to discuss it. We use videos to ensure that, where with just 1 hour of video content we can add a lot of relevant context to bring everyone up to speed 🚀 This should not take more than a couple of hours to prep & I would recommend to almost only use your day-to-day work material as the things you record from. Loom is a good software tool to do the videos This brings me to my second advice 😃 2️⃣ Do not spend time on reporting - aim to create value 📊 When talking to founders I often get surprised on how many spend the majority of their board meetings doing reporting. That SHOULD be done beforehand (ideally monthly) and all potential questions to this should be addressed in writing before the meeting. It is okay to spend the first 30 minutes on clarifying questions to material etc. - but do NOT let it overflow and capture the meeting 👻 Instead we often design workshops with clear Desired Outcomes and work with the Board like it was an internal strategy session daring to be 100% transparant & vulnerable and utilise their experience on the topics to get as much value as possible. We never vote or make definitive decisions (with the exception being fundraising and similar matters) - instead we regard it as input and make the business decisions in the Leadership Team, who has the needed day-to-day context to make great decisions 3️⃣ Board don’t really make the differences, but can for sure be supportive At the end of the day the impact in a business is created daily and I have never heard anything that felt that their board meetings, where truly transformative. Ensure you have the best possible people to get feedback on strategy & aim for the maximum output, but… Also remember to have fun 🏎️ This builds a stronger relationship making it easier and better to use the board members between the meetings, which is where the actual value is created 💸 (Picture is from our go cart session at the last board meeting - sadly the 3 ligthest people made the podium 😉) These were a few tips based on my experiences, but I am but no mean an expert, so would love to hear you: How do you maximise the value of your investors & board members inside & outside the board room? 🤔

Rubbing shoulders with the star: Vivino 😱 Launched Saturday, my app 'Wine Todo' reached the top 20 within the Food & Drinks category (at least in Denmark) yesterday. Currently, it's sitting at #15, right next to Vivino, which feels kinda crazy. After all, it's Vivino: we all know it, most of us have it on our phones, and it has been the leading wine app in the app store for years—probably a decade. Just being shoulder to shoulder with such a renowned app feels incredible... even though it's just for a brief moment until my app drops in the ranks again, which I honestly know it will. Why? My app is more niche, focusing on just helping people learn about wine. It requires a higher investment from users than just scanning a wine. So, in all honesty, I expect it to drop soon, though my focus is to keep it visible and as high up as possible for as long as possible. I know this is no guarantee of success. Not at all, actually. A potential "vanity metric" at worst, but it’s interesting to see how the app store algorithm works—because I certainly haven't gained thousands of downloads yet. But as long as it's up there, I can be a bit proud. Because just standing in the shadow of apps like Vivino—but also Uber Eats, The Michelin Guide, and Yelp—is kinda cool.

Sweden: 'Beef & Veg burger' In 2023, Swedish Axfood launched the Beef & Vegetable mincemeat, which has become a big seller with sales of over 1 ton per day, reports Carina Malm in the article included below. 'Now this hybrid mince has a sequel: the Nöt & Grönt burger. Like the mince, it contains equal parts of beef and vegetables and thus halves the climate footprint compared to a regular beef burger. The new Beef & Vegetable Burger is a pre-seasoned burger that is ready to put on the grill or in the frying pan. It is described as having a similar flavour to a beef burger but is slightly juicier and softer in texture, as it contains half vegetables. Many foodtech companies have had a tough time with decreased valuations or even bankruptcy. VC investments in foodtech and other sectors have been the lowest in many years creating a paradox where investors don't want to enter a company with low turnover but to increase turnover requires capital. “Many of our portfolio companies have been forced to adjust their activities and cost structures to make their cash flow last longer. This has led to lower turnover and valuations. But in many cases also to more sustainable business models and new partnerships. Entrepreneurs are being forced to work smarter and towards profitability, making companies more resilient and better equipped when the market turns.” says Nicoya's CEO Christopher Slim in an interview with Impact Loop. The need for change in the food system has not diminished just because of tough times. The challenges with greenhouse gas emissions, exceeding planetary boundaries, increasing lifestyle diseases, and pressure on society are as big as ever. There are enormous opportunities in the transformation of the food system. "The food system is in as much need of change as ever but foodtech is an early-stage sector that requires smart capital and patience to get returns. It is clear that consumers want greener and healthier food, but don't want to compromise on taste, texture, and experience. The stagnation in category growth of plant-based that we've seen has partly been driven by not meeting consumer expectations and partly current price sensitivity of consumers.” Together with consumer research and portfolio company InsightMe., Nicoya has taken a closer look at the demand for plant-based food, and the results were published in “The Food Frontrunner Report 2023”.  The report concludes that the willingness to switch diets to greener alternatives continues to grow. By breaking down data on different behaviors, it was also found that plant-based substitutes for animal-based foods play an important role in this transition. “As consumer purchasing power returns and the new generation of products are cleaner and tastier, we believe that plant-based will continue to grow. As investors, we remain interested in category-defining consumer brands and new smart ingredients and technologies with underlying, structural profitability. It just has to not be shit. * Today we are giving the finishing touches to a fresh new website. We have been fiddling for months. Stop. Start. That's how it is in startups. A few weeks ago when debating one of the endless features you could build in the developer said - stop, this isn't for now. Pause. Then: "You're right. It just has to not be shit" When you have a vision of where you went to get to it can be difficult to know when to stop, so you can start. When what you have is good enough for now. Congrats to TERASi and AquaFood AB for raising 1 MSEK each from Vinnova! 163 grant applicants, only 32 awarded. The grant approval kicks off the first of four project stages, each stage granting up to 1 MSEK for a total of 4 MSEK per company. Potentially, 8 MSEK raised for my clients. Vinnova will help them achieve product-market fit by:   - Upscaling their technology to higher TRLs - Iterating their product offering with customers - Securing private funding and offtake contracts This is the first time James and Oliver trust me to support their grant strategy.
