I was delighted to host our latest webinar alongside my Baringa colleagues – Francesca Tedeschi, Pavlos Trichakis and Mark Turner, to explore some of the latest trends in European Power Markets. It was a lively discussion across demand-side changes, commercial and risk management structures, and the impact on investors and developers.  After the tumultuous year of 2022, we started by asking whether the last 18 months of relative stability in power and gas markets are now the new normality, or have we been lulled into a false sense of security, and could we quickly revert to conditions of extreme volatility once again?   The discussion then moved into three thematics that will shape the near term 1) The growth in demand from AI and data processing.... a Chat GPT query consumes 25 times more power than a simple internet query. Imagine the scale of demand that can be ‘shifted’ across globally connected data centres to optimise across pricing and emissions! 2) The residual impact of the price shocks in 2023 saw a surging demand for offtakers to enter into CPPAs, but the recent stability in prices has since corrected the market  3) In a world of tightening margins, developers need to remain laser focused on supply chain and route to market capability, with margins moving from development to operational assets  Watch here https://lnkd.in/dZe-Xd3C

Resilience and scalability are becoming non-negotiable in a sector undergoing such rapid change. With $3 trillion of grid investments on the horizon, the opportunities are enormous—but so are the challenges. For businesses, success will depend on their ability to align long-term strategies with the immediate demands of a transforming energy market. Bringing people along for the journey is a prominent part of leading organizations seeing their AI implementations maximize value. When leading companies undertake tech transformations, they need to focus two-thirds of their effort and resources on people-related capabilities and split the other third between technology and algorithms.   Here's Nick Smaling and I’s short take on AI transformation in Europe, after having joined #AI Transformation Forums’ event earlier this month to discuss with business leaders in the Netherlands, how they can invest strategically in a few high-priority opportunities to scale and maximize AI’s value. In my 20-year career at BCG, I have never seen faster competitive and technological change than today. The consequences are clear: To survive, companies must undertake complex end–to–end transformations. They are poised to perform—but how?    One reaction is that companies have significantly increased their hiring of Chief Transformation Officers (CTOs). But do CTOs really improve the company's performance? Our recent study paints a clear picture: ➡ CTOs deliver strong returns: To gauge performance of the newly hired CTOs, BCG calculated Total Shareholder Return (TSR) from five years before the CTO was hired through three years afterward. On average, companies went from underperforming to overperforming in their industries.     ➡ CTOs boost performance: Among the companies that had underperformed their industry average TSR for the past three years and hired a CTO to elevate performance, they reversed their underperformance dramatically, with TSR accelerating from -23% to +5% after three years.     ➡ CTOs also help the best: 40% of CTOs were hired to highly accomplished companies that were already outperforming their industries. Once a product leaves a company’s hands, guiding its end-of-life outcome becomes a major challenge. Achieving circularity requires collaboration across the value chain and creating customer experiences that make sustainable behaviors easier. My colleagues at BCG have identified 11 behavioral nudges that can shift consumer habits and help close the loop on circularity. Interesting overview published by The GLOBSEC Grid Transition Index 2024, showing the status of European grid readiness for the green #energytransition. The European Commission estimates that approximately €584 billion will be needed to upgrade electricity grids across the EU by 2030.
