I found myself quoting Deming in a question about Pull Requests (PR's) today. “Inspection does not improve the quality, nor guarantee quality. Inspection is too late. The quality, good or bad, is already in the product. As Harold F. Dodge said, 'You can not inspect quality into a product.'" Many people will make the argument that PR's are a quality step and that if we got rid of them, there would be no way to ensure quality. Except PR’s are an inspection step, and Deming is clear that by the time we're inspecting, the quality is either already there or not. We cannot inspect quality into the product. If we want to build in quality then we need to be approaching that far earlier than the PR. That's not to suggest that there is no value to inspection. It can identify problems with the earlier process that led to poor quality, but is not itself going to add any quality to the product. If we're finding problems here then it's the process that needs to be fixed first, before we fix the product. My preference for improving quality is increased collaboration. Ensemble (aka mob programming) or pair programming. Anything where we get multiple people actively building the product together, rather than building a piece and asking someone else to inspect it.

Yet, the number of organizations where it's routine for the whole team to talk to the customers is still incredibly low. If it stays that way, POM will be pronounced dead soon, too. I expect that around after 1.000.000 certifications issued. Long live POM.

As a Scrum practitioner with years of experience working with teams in Silicon Valley, I was recently asked whether teams should estimate Spikes in a sprint. After consulting Scrum Sage: Zen Edition, I realized that its answer did not align with the discipline needed for hyperproductive Scrum or the patterns essential to implement high performance. The truth is, all work needs to be estimated in your sprint. Otherwise, you won't know your capacity, and you won't be able to use Yesterday's Weather to predict whether you'll finish a sprint. Without this knowledge, you'll maximize Bayesian surprise and be unable to innovate or improve. If you're unfamiliar with the concept of Bayesian surprise, I highly recommend reading "First Principles in Scrum" on leanpub.com or consulting with Scrum Sage: Zen Edition. Remember, estimation is key to success in Scrum.

🚨 We are asking too much of "certifications" 🚨 The PSM1 and PSM2 would total 32 hours of optional training and are both multiple-choice. We are asking too much of certification, and any attribution of job or role capability from them is a fallacy! The assessments from Scrumorg are designed as self-assessments of knowledge. They are study aids... not a validation of the skills of the person who has them. Here is what Scrumorg says: - PSM I holders have a consistent terminology and approach to Scrum; 656,075 people - PSM II holders have proven that they have an understanding of the principles and application of Scrum; 42,825 people (6.5%) - PSM III certificate holders have a deep understanding of the application and practices of Scrum and the Scrum Values in complex team and organizational situations; 1,177 (0.2%) Why have only 0.2% of those who have gone down the Scrumorg route progressed to PSM3?

Scrum, as a lot of developers know it, has failed. Yeah, yeah, I see a well-intended crowd coming out of the woodwork with the proclamations that story points are not a part of Scrum, and you don’t have to answer 3 questions during your dailies, and Scrum master shouldn’t assign tasks and the list goes on and on. Guess what – perception is reality. And reality on the ground is ugly. Whatever has been called Scrum on the ground by thousands of “practitioners” and shoved down the devs throats doesn’t make sense to a reasonable person and has failed them. The agile community can repeat its mantra “this is not Scrum,” and “this is not in Scrum Guide” dozens of times before breakfast and it won’t change people’s reality on the ground. I saw devs who were happy to admit, “what we are doing here with you in your teams is definitely not scrum we were told by our previous scrum master, and this is so much better and makes so much more sense.” And it doesn’t make any difference. I don’t really care to spread the gospel of Scrum of the Church of Ken and Jeff, don’t really care “to change the world of working,” don’t really care for the global agile nirvana. The people in the trenches have spoken, or the hundreds of the less-than-educated and experienced practitioners have spoken for them. It is what it is now, it’s over and it’s lost. We have a new reality to deal with and the reality is – for most developers I know Scrum has failed and it has failed them. Time to bury the word and move on. There will be something better. There will be better ways of working. My sincere hope it will come from the developers, not from the hand waving and tree hugging crowd of facilitators and coaches who play team therapists all day long. It will come from those whose life has to change. There will be a better, not so tarnished and marred word for it.
