  • August 2024 has seen a surge in wildfires worldwide, mainly in Africa Credits to Our World in Data . Follow Them for more valuable insights. Original post: __________ The chart shows the weekly area burned by wildfires globally and in Africa from 2012 to 2024. This August saw an abrupt increase in the area burned by wildfires, with most of this rise coming in a single week. This global weekly burn rate was 64% higher than any previous week during this period. This data comes from the Global Wildfire Information System. This dramatic rise was mostly driven by severe wildfires in Africa, where approximately 22 million hectares burned in a week, accounting for around 80% of the global burned area. Two countries have been particularly hard-hit — Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo — where 6% and 2.5% of the total land area have burned in just one week. • What Do People Think Will Happen in 2025? Credits to Statista . Follow Them for more valuable insights. Original post: __________ If the last years have shown us anything, it’s that a lot can change, fast. While many events cannot be foreseen, can others? Ipsos asked more than 23,700 people across 33 countries about their predictions for the coming year, with a survey on topics ranging from technology to the environment and world security. This data is based on one survey alone and although it does not focus on additional knowledge of experts and analysts, it does capture a snapshot of sentiments and standpoints in different countries and regions. As the following chart shows, many people around the globe seem to be in agreement over the likelihood of global temperatures set to rise. Eight in ten respondents said that next year, we can expect the world to warm further still. This belief was most widespread in Indonesia (91 percent), the Philippines (89 percent) and Malaysia (88 percent). In a similar vein, more than seven in ten (72 percent) of respondents said they expect to see more extreme weather events in the country that they live in than last year. Meanwhile, many respondents were doubtful over whether the government in their country would introduce more demanding targets to reduce carbon emissions more quickly, with only 52 percent of respondents saying it was likely authorities would act in such a way. Respondents in China were the most optimistic about this prospect (84 percent). Views on whether the conflicts currently raging in the Middle East and Ukraine will come to an end in 2025 were pessimistic. Only around two in ten people thought it would be the case in the Middle East. In Ukraine, closer to three in ten thought the same, but this still marks a four percentage point drop on predictions from the same time one year ago. Just one in three people worldwide thought that people in their country would become more tolerant of one another, marking a fall of two percentage points since last year. In terms of the online world, nearly two thirds of respondents said that they expect AI will replace jobs in their country in 2025. At the same time, 43 percent agreed that AI will lead to many new jobs being created in their country. When asked whether respondents thought that many more people will live in virtual worlds next year, 59 percent of respondents agreed it likely would be the case - up from 56 percent in 2022. Data sources 23,721 adults in 33 countries surveyed Oct. 25 - Nov. 8, 2024 https://lnkd.in/eaRWwBNp __________ ♻️ Find this post useful? • Comparing the Carbon Footprint of Transportation Options Credits to Visual Capitalist . Follow Them for more valuable insights. Original post: __________ As concern about climate change has grown, individuals are becoming increasingly conscious of their impact on the environment. Transportation emissions often make up the largest portion of our individual carbon footprints. For that reason, evaluating transport options is a natural place to start, whether it is for a daily commute or a leisure trip abroad. So, what’s the most eco-friendly way to go from one place to another? The above infographic charts the carbon footprint of transportation per passenger-kilometer for different vehicles based on data from the UK Government’s methodology paper for greenhouse gas reporting. Planes, Trains and Automobiles: How Carbon Footprints Compare The carbon footprint of transportation is measured in grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents emitted per person to travel one kilometer. This includes both carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Flying on a short flight or driving alone are the most carbon-intensive travel methods. However, adding one more passenger to your car ends up cutting the emissions in half, making driving more efficient. Specifically, it’s worth breaking down categories of flights more, as their emissions depend greatly on their route length: Short Flights: For example, domestic flights within a European country, or flights within a U.S. state have the highest individual carbon footprint. Medium Flights: For example, international travel within Europe, or between U.S. states, have a significantly lower carbon footprint per person. Long Flights: Flights over 3,700 km (2,300 mi), about the distance from Los Angeles to New York, have the lowest carbon footprint per person. Why are longer flights far more eco-friendly than short-range flights? It’s because take-off uses much more energy than the ‘cruise’ phase of a flight. For short flights, the efficient cruise phase is relatively short-lived. • Six Stages of sustainability thinking  Credits to Dr.Mohamed Tash . Follow him for more sustainability content. __________ Original post 📍Successful sustainability thinking often involves a systematic approach to integrating sustainable practices into all aspects of decision-making, aiming for environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic viability. 📍While various models exist, a common framework includes six stages: 1. Understanding Sustainability: ▪️This initial stage involves gaining a comprehensive understanding of what sustainability means, including its environmental, social, and economic dimensions. It's about recognizing the interconnectedness of these aspects and the need for balance among them. 2. Commitment: ▪️At this stage, individuals, organizations, or governments commit to sustainability as a core value. This commitment involves setting sustainability goals and policies, which guide future actions and decisions. It's about making a genuine pledge to integrate sustainable practices into operations, strategies, and daily life. 3. Planning and Strategy Development: ▪️ the focus shifts to developing actionable strategies and plans to achieve the set sustainability goals. ▪️This involves conducting sustainability assessments, identifying areas for improvement, and setting specific, measurable objectives. Planning also includes allocating resources and defining timelines for implementation. 4. Implementation: ▪️During this stage, the planned sustainability strategies and actions are put into practice. ▪️This involves integrating sustainable practices into daily operations, launching sustainability initiatives, and engaging stakeholders. ▪️Effective implementation requires coordination across departments or sectors and continuous monitoring of progress. 5. Monitoring and Evaluation: ▪️This stage involves tracking the progress of sustainability initiatives against the set goals and objectives. ▪️It includes collecting data, analyzing performance, and assessing the impact of sustainability efforts. ▪️Monitoring and evaluation help in identifying successes, challenges, and areas needing improvement. 6. Reporting and Communication: ▪️The final stage involves transparently reporting on sustainability performance and communicating the outcomes to stakeholders, including employees, customers, investors, and the wider community. ▪️Effective communication highlights achievements, shares best practices, and can motivate further action. ▪️It also ensures accountability and can enhance reputation. 📍Moving through these stages requires a dynamic and iterative process, as learning and adaptation are integral to successful sustainability thinking.
