🌿Green hydrogen: France can play a pivotal role in Europe, but decisions have to be taken now! We had the pleasure, Haithem Choukatli and I, to talk with Gwénaëlle Deboutte from pv magazine France about this urgent and fascinating topic. The energy world is buzzing with announcements about green hydrogen, but the reality is more nuanced. Out of 471 announced projects, only 10% have confirmed their investments. The potential is huge - ~50+ million tonnes per year - but here are the challenges: ✨ Price remains the sinews of war. In Europe, producing 1kg of green hydrogen is expected to cost between €5 and €7. Only e-fuels for aviation and shipping seem willing to pay this price. For other industries, it's still too expensive. ✨ Imports appear to be part of the solution. North Africa could produce at €3-3.5/kg with low transportation costs to Europe by pipe. Germany has understood this, planning to import up to 70% of its needs by 2030. ✨ And what about France? France has a decisive role to play in structuring the future European market for renewable hydrogen and positioning itself as a transit country, as it did for natural gas in the 1990s. Green hydrogen is promising, as a relay to European renewable electricity production, notably via photovoltaics (François Sfarti), but its future is at stake right now. The European #trucking industry is steadily bouncing back, with recovery expected to continue through 2024 and possibly into 2025, driven by overall economic growth and increased consumption. Earlier this year, BCG partnered with Alpega to dive into the spot and contract #road freight market in #Europe, covering data from 2019 through early 2024. We’ve just updated those findings for Q2 and Q3, and while there are still hurdles—rising costs, driver shortages, and the challenges smaller players face—there’s clear momentum on the horizon for road freight operators. But companies should not simply wait as conditions improve. Instead, they can take proactive steps to capitalize on the #recovery by growing through M&A, improving their access to data, and leveraging digital tools to optimize their route network and pricing. Learning from New CEOs Last week Rich Lesser, Matthias Tauber and I hosted our annual New CEO Forum in Paris with 13 new enterprise CEOs who lead companies in a broad range sectors across financial services, industrial goods, healthcare, energy and more, headquartered in a diverse set of European markets. We discussed how CEOs today can create resilient organizations that demonstrate agility in addressing the increasing short-term pressures on their businesses while also investing deliberately to drive sustained growth and innovation. We reflected how leaders can transfer the capabilities that their teams honed in crises – when people pull together with a shared sense of purpose, accountability and the imperative of effective decision making – into a ‘steady state’ of running the business that is markedly more volatile than it used to be. And Bruce Cleaver, former CEO of de Beers, shared his perspective on CEOs needing to turn a 'burning platform' (that is intuitively understood in any crisis) into a 'burning ambition' for ‘peacetime operations’. What truly impressed me was the pervasive sense of humility of the CEOs present: all of them emphasized how much they rise and fall with the shared ambition, energy and support of their team We left energized and hopeful for the future, knowing these leaders are at the forefront of world changing businesses. [🎙️] Do you know what French companies are doing to achieve their ecological transition and develop an economy that respects planetary boundaries? 🌍 Let me introduce you to the « CEC » (Convention of Companies for Climate), for which I’ve just been appointed (one of the many) spokesperson (or Top Voice, as LinkedIn likes to call it 😉). I had the incredible opportunity to take part in the very first edition back in 2021 (I'll tell you more about the origins of this initiative and the people in the photo in a future post.), right when the world was debating whether we should continue business as usual or completely rethink our societal and economic models. The experience was so eye-opening that I offered to become the CEC’s Minister of Foreign Affairs (yes, I’m shooting high! 😅) to share this initiative and its learnings with our friends around the globe 🌍. After all, I had been elected Minister of Foreign Affairs of the « ideal Social Economy government » by Carenews readers in 2018. We’ll start by sharing some content in English. But first, a quick intro for those wondering: What exactly is the CEC?👇 Founded in December 2020, the Convention of Companies for Climate (CEC) aims to make the transition from an extractive economy to a regenerative one irresistible by 2030. It’s ambitious, but with motivated leaders and engaged experts, anything is possible 💪 Between 2021 and 2022, the first edition brought business leaders together in a collective effort to redefine their models within planetary boundaries. Today, there are 17 CEC programs, with over 2,000 leaders (CEOs & « Planet Champions ») and 1,000 companies redesigning their future. And the cherry on top 🍒: the CEC is expanding to Switzerland and Belgium soon! I'm thrilled to share key findings from BCG's latest study on gender equality in Europe's financial industry. As the industry continues to work towards a more diverse and inclusive workforce, the findings emphasize both progress and areas that need more focus. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: 🚺 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: Women still hold just 24% of executive roles in Europe's top 50 banks, despite growing efforts. 💸 𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐲 𝐆𝐚𝐩: Women earn >20% less than men in both executive and supervisory roles, and the gap widened compared to 2023. 🌍 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: Northern & Central Europe show progress, but full gender parity remains elusive.
