HKSAR Proposes to Waive the Stamp Duty Payable on the Transfer of Shares or Units of REIT and the Jobbing Business of Options Market Makers On November 8, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) published the Stamp Duty Legislation (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2024 to waive the stamp duty payable on the transfer of shares or units of real estate investment trust (REIT) and the jobbing business of options market makers, and to provide for a revised stamp duty collection arrangement upon the implementation of the uncertificated securities market (USM) regime in HKSAR. "The stamp duty waiver payable on the transfer of REIT shares or units and the jobbing business of options market makers, as announced in the 2024-25 Budget, would enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong REITs and reduce the transaction costs of options market makers. The revised stamp duty collection arrangement would facilitate a more efficient stamping and collection process under the USM environment. These measures would help promote the development of the financial market," the Government spokesperson said. The Bill will be introduced into the Legislative Council for first reading on November 20.

[Letter to Hongkong] Is 2025 the Year for Retirement? — Robert Chung (Editor’s note: HKPORI held a press conference today to outline our development direction for the coming year and explain our decision of repositioning. The President and Chief Executive Officer, Robert Chung, authored this article to elaborate on the considerations behind the decision.) Numerically, 2025 is a squarely neat number. It is the sum of 0+1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 squared, and it is also the sum of the cubes of all these numbers. Incidentally, on 25 of January 2025, there will be a rare conjunction of six planets. These make me think: May be 2025 is a good year to retire. I have just stepped down from my two-year presidency of the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), so I have at least done something for Hong Kong and the world, maybe I can retire. But then I thought, “I have also promised to write a global textbook on public opinion research, seems that I cannot quit. Looking back at Hong Kong, I have been working in the field of public opinion research for more than one-third of a century. I have witnessed a boom then a bust, and it is saddening to see the dissipation of talents. “Should I stay on?” Seems that it is not a question but an exclamation. When we left the university amidst social chaos, we had the support of countless citizens. Generosity brings responsibility. Three years ago, I was advised to leave, and I could choose anywhere. I agreed, that everywhere can be my home. But as I said on the stage of “100% Hong Kong”, we have heavenly truth and universal love, so we do not just ask how things are, but also what we feel. I stayed. I stayed not to fight, but to persevere. As a teenager, I was fascinated by astronomy, and I realized the persistence of the sages to the truth. The laws of the universe will not be changed by anyone. Geocentricity, heliocentrism, atheism, and all other theories may be restricted by the authorities at times, but the truth will never change. Mahatma Gandhi has taught us, “All through history the way of truth and love has always won. Affinity Equity Partners, a Hong Kong-based investment firm, is set to acquire a controlling stake in South Korea’s leading car rental and leasing company, Lotte Rental Co. Industry sources indicate that Lotte Group will hold a board meeting to name Affinity Equity as the preferred bidder to purchase 60.67% of Lotte Rental from two Lotte affiliates, as reported by KED Global. Currently, Lotte Hotel Co. and Busan Lotte Hotel own 37.8% and 22.83% of Lotte Rental, respectively.

Sinohope Technology Holdings Limited (1611.HK) announced that its subsidiary, Sinohope Asset Management (Hong Kong) Limited (“Sinohope AM”), has received approval from the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission for its application for a Type 1 (dealing in securities) license and an uplift of its Type 4 (advising on securities) license. With the new Type 1 license, Sinohope AM will be able to distribute virtual asset (VA) related products to professional investors, including but not limited to VA funds and VA structured products. As a Type 4 license holder, Sinohope AM can now also provide VA advisory services under its uplifted license. We look forward to leveraging these new licenses to better serve professional investors with innovative VA offerings. [NWS Issued Positive Profit Alert for FY2024] #NWS has issued a Positive Profit Alert, anticipating profit attributable to Shareholders for FY2024 would record an amount in the range of HK$2 billion to HK$2.2 billion, representing an increase of no less than 33% as compared to the restated profit attributable to the Shareholders for FY2023. The restated profit for FY2023 would be an amount in the range of approximately HK$1.4 billion to HK$1.5 billion, being adjusted from the profit attributable to Shareholders for FY2023 of HK$2 billion as previously stated in the 2023 annual report of the Company due to the adoption of HKFRS17. This growth, attributed to factors like enhanced operating profits in the Insurance segment and a remarkable turnaround in the Facilities Management segment, showcases the Group's resilience. Despite challenges like RMB depreciation, the Roads and Logistics segments have demonstrated steady growth too. MPF Ratings today released its Q3 2024 MPF Asset Class Fund Flow Summary by expressing disappointment that MPF members appear to have not learned from past mistakes resulting in some members making a “double loss”. Rather than capitalizing on discounted markets and focusing on long term diversification, MPF Ratings’ Q3 MPF fund flow data suggests that as the US Nasdaq fell into correction territory and the Nikkei 225 Index recorded its largest points drop ever back in early August, members switched into Money Market Funds, and by doing so simultaneously realized significant losses while missing the subsequent market rebound. People are paying too much attention to specific events and losing sight of the bigger trends. Over the last 30 to 40 years of global globalization, significant expertise has developed in different regions of the world. The innovation, particularly in supply chain management, is remarkable. It's important to be aware of where these innovations are originating from. 🏷 The era has been marked by significant innovation The post-COVID world is complex, and people are talking to each other less. We have seen a lot of surprises in the last 2-3 years, such as the innovation of AI and the development of the EV market. Innovation arrives when we least expect it, and it has marked this era significantly. It's challenging to plan for, but it's this very unpredictability that makes it so exciting. In large economies like the US and China, about 25% of the economies change every 10 years. Similar to a large language model, when you have enough data and robust activities, you tend to have very interesting surprises emerging from this.
