Day 14 of #USvGoogle started with Google Finance Director, Jessica Mok. Google tried to minimize the financial importance of its adtech business, showing that it operated at a loss from 2015-2017, to downplay the role of display in generating revenue, and land an out-of-context soundbite about how much they pay publishers. On cross, DOJ highlighted that Google tracks revenue separately for display, video and app inventory, and for direct vs. indirect-sold inventory supporting their market definition argument. DOJ also pointed out that Google decides whether to classify revenue as principal or agent, which informs whether Traffic Acquisition Costs (”TAC”), money paid to publishers, is included in their figures. Obviously, without TAC, booked revenue will appear lower, and margin will appear higher. Google then called Dr. Mark Israel to play some more number games. He is an economics expert, and his analysis is central to Google’s case. While I expected something at least somewhat compelling, instead we got analysis that appears completely detached from reality. Google seems to want to pretend their publisher customers simply do not exist. While DOJ’s case focuses primarily on harm to publishers, there was a 30 minute stretch of time at the beginning of Israel’s testimony where his only mention of anything publisher-adjacent was to explain the origin of the “cellophane fallacy” as the theory that prices for cellophane might go up so much that people resort to wrapping their sandwiches in newspaper. He starts by refuting the DOJ’s definition of 3 distinct markets, proposing instead that adtech is a single two-sided market. He says that DOJ excludes other places advertisers find impressions, other ways “connections” to audiences are made, and the other types of adtech that exist. No mention of publishers. He talks about shifting media consumption trends, highlighting growth of apps and mobile environments, as well as the growth of ad spend on social, and the rise of retail media. Still, no mention of publishers. He talks about how social and retail media companies act as competitive restraints on Google and serve as reasonable substitutes…again, with respect to advertisers. Google even pulls up a deck to make their point that compares Google and Amazon, and explicitly references the fact that Amazon does not offer a publisher ad server, while Google has DFP. Finally he mentions publishers, to say that if ROI for advertisers were to fall, both advertisers and publishers might switch. For example, he says, publishers might move to a different exchange, move more of their content to apps, or adopt a subscription model. Soon after, he explains publishers can move more of their inventory from indirect to direct sales. It’s about “how hard sales people work” to sell direct. A few minutes later, he suggests that if Google’s publisher ad server isn’t good, advertisers might switch to Facebook. I literally wrote “What??” in my notes. (more in comments)

"Are LinkedIn Ads Too Expensive" 💸 Simon. Chuang, Director of Digital Marketing @ Lacework, gives his 2 cents. We see this concern with our clients all the time. When asked about it, Simon Chuang, Head of Digital Marketing at Lacework, had a two-fold reply: LinkedIn can be expensive when used for cold lead gen versus capturing the attention of a warmer audience. CPL climbs for cold audiences, especially if you're trying to push content downloads. If you've taken the time and effort to nurture your audience through educational content, even in the form of ads, you can expect a very economical cost per view. With strategic retargeting of the right titles and the right accounts, the CPL drops for a warm audience. However, you should consider the size and type of audience you're targeting. To alleviate this, you need to assess the quality of leads if your sales team sees them as worth following up with. See how far they progress down the funnel after the call and how they eventually add to your pipeline/ revenue numbers. For instance, Google ads CPL is at 150 vs. that of LinkedIn is at 400. But if you win a booked call with the latter, you need to evaluate the value of that opportunity. 🎯 The bottom line is you can't assess the effectiveness of a platform solely by investment proportion. Epic news! "Singapore business confidence hits two-year high in Q4 2024: Commercial Credit Bureau survey". "LOCAL business sentiment continued on an upward trend for the fifth consecutive quarter, hitting a two-year high in the fourth quarter of 2024. Data released by the Singapore Commercial Credit Bureau (SCCB) on Monday (Sep 9) showed that the Business Optimism Index rose marginally to +5.06 percentage points in Q4, from +4.94 percentage points in Q3. On the year, the index for the quarter was also higher than the +4.35 percentage points recorded in Q4 2023. Similar to the previous quarter, indicators of sales volume, net profit, selling price, new orders and employment level stayed expansionary. Meanwhile, inventory level rebounded to zero percentage point in Q4 2024 from -1.48 percentage points in Q3 2024. Three of the six indicators improved on a quarter-on-quarter basis, namely sales volume, net profit and inventory level, while selling price and new orders moderated. Employment level fell to +5.93 percentage points in Q4, from +6.67 percentage points in the previous quarter. On the year, both sales volume and net profit climbed to +7.41 percentage points in Q4 2024, from +3.73 percentage points and +2.24 percentage points, respectively. Inventory level for Q4 2024 stood at zero percentage point, recovering from the -2.24 percentage points recorded in the previous year. New orders moderated to +2.96 percentage points in the latest quarter, down from +3.73 percentage points in Q4 2023. Selling price fell to +6.67 percentage points in Q4 2024 from +11.19 percentage points in the year before, while employment level dipped to +5.93 percentage points in the latest quarter from +7.46 percentage points in the prior year. SCCB noted that the financial, construction and transportation sectors were the most optimistic, with at least five out of six indicators in positive territory." With a Fed rate cut coming, liquidity being eased for exapnsion and M&A, orders coming in, less firms laying people off and more companies employing people business is looking rosy in Singapore. Big gaming and marketing news for brands or agencies in #Vietnam. VNG (Vietnam Gaming) and Roblox just announced their partnership to “officially” bring Roblox to Vietnam. Until now, Roblox hasn’t officially been represented in Vietnam. Roblox have been unable to monetise the large Vietnamese market, and Vietnamese brands who have been slow to adopt the platform to reach potential customers. Given Roblox’s aggressive international and brand partnership growth plans, it makes sense they would partner with VNG to accelerate expansion into the market. Zhen F., Head of International Markets for Roblox said “At Roblox, our mission is to engage people with optimism and respect. This cooperation with VNG will give the user community in Vietnam the ability to access millions of virtual experiences on the Roblox platform. Vietnam is an important market for Roblox, and we are committed to bringing the best experiences to users in Vietnam”. This will likely mean quicker adoption of Roblox, as media habits change, and marketers look outside of traditional social media platforms to reach potential customers. I'm once again being bombarded with connection requests from obviously fake profiles (must be scam season). Only lately, they have been trying different approaches. Less of the attractive Asian woman under 30 in Singapore who seems to be an amazingly successful beauty entrepreneur who also happens to specialise in digital marketing, sales management, B2B, transformation strategies and ESG. Now I get all types of characters from many countries, so it gets harder to sort the fakers from the movers and shakers. However, there are some clues: -     The fakes almost never have any other contact details than their Linked In profile. Anybody serious on LinkedIn looking for good connections will show their website at least. -     The AI generated profiles are generally easy to spot as they read like a shopping list of all the key words you need to see. -     With fakes there are almost never any ‘posts’ but ‘reposts’. -     The fake career paths just don’t seem to add up. I’ve only fallen for it once. Whereby some seriously dodgy messaging followed and I quickly realised I had dropped my guard. Very tiresome.

What marketing tactics for increased awareness and user acquisition works best in Japan? The truth is kinda sad. After chatting with a ton of acquisition marketers, digital marketers, Big 3 consultants, and executives, Flyers 「チラシ 📜 」directly into the target audience’s mailbox is the clearly the most effect and cheapest way to convert users. [Probably next to word of mouth] With all the digitization happening everywhere, the effectiveness of the physical world [offline] has been forgotten but it's still a critical avenue to explore. While this caught me by surprise when I first hear about it, I 100% am sure that there are flyers that are in my mailbox that I read, which I would otherwise ignore if it came up on a random social media feed. 20 years ago, I was happy to receive an email, but totally disregarded snail mail. There are two fundamental constraints to Retail Media Networks (RMNs): Audience Size: RMNs and retargeting are closely related because they both depend on a finite audience—namely, the visitors to a retailer's website. This naturally limits the growth potential for both strategies. Just like retargeting, where effectiveness is capped by the number of users already engaging with a brand, RMNs are constrained by the traffic to the retailer’s ecosystem. If fewer people visit the site, the available audience for RMN ads shrinks, which in turn can reduce revenue, assuming a constant return on ad spend (ROAS). While expanding to offline shoppers or using lookalike audiences can increase reach, performance may not be as strong. Performance (Incrementality): The second key issue is incrementality—or rather, the lack of it. Serving an ad through an RMN doesn’t necessarily result in a new, incremental sale. Many of these ads reach shoppers who likely would have purchased the product anyway. This mirrors the problem with retargeting: when ads primarily reach people who are already inclined to buy, the impact of the ad spend diminishes. Advertisers are becoming more aware that increasing their RMN budget doesn’t always translate into a corresponding rise in sales. In the early days of RMNs, or even before they were called RMNs I had the honor of working with HookLogic, Inc. (Acquired by Criteo in 2016) advertisers were eager to spend more because ROAS was so high. But when budgets weren’t fully spent, the solution became offsite retargeting. Any change from an measurement standpoint on the advertiser side can cause a step up or down in spend.
