MPF Ratings released Q1 2024 MPF Asset Class Fund Flow Summary by highlighting that US equities received over $9bn of MPF’s net inflows in Q1 2024, by far the largest quarterly MPF net inflows into US equities ever recorded, and a concerning trend which Mr Chung attributes to a confluence of new fund launches, disappointing local equity results and MPF members trying to capitalize on the strong momentum of the US market. MPF Ratings today released its July MPF Performance Survey, pointing out that total MPF assets have reached a new record all-time high on the back of MPF’s 5th positive performance month this year. Aided by approximately $6.8bn in performance earnings in July, average MPF account balances are now approximately just under $260,000 at $259,900. The Nasdaq entered correction territory, a warning that MPF members have too much to lose if they get market timing wrong. MPF Ratings released the monthly performance survey by pointing out that while a second half pullback in May left the MPF system just short of its all-time record total asset size, average MPF account balances now exceed $250,000 for the first time since January 2022 as the system produced a positive monthly return, its 3rd in 2024. US equities topped the MPF's May performance table with a return of 4.72%, as the system generated a May gain of 2.08%, to increase its year-to-date gains to 4.36%, the best first 5 calendar months’ performance since 2021 and the 8th best first 5 calendar months’ performance since MPF’s launch. Despite October’s return setback, MPF Ratings still expects the MPF system to deliver record asset and account balances by the end of 2024. If the system maintains its 2024 average monthly return in November and December then MPF’s total asset size should exceed the previous high of $1.327tr level which was reached in Q3 of this year. MPF Ratings released Q2 2024 MPF Asset Class Fund Flow Summary by highlighting a conflicting trend that saw MPF total assets achieve a record high while recording a surprising drop in net inflows in the 2nd quarter of 2024. Q2 2024 net inflows are estimated to be $11.77bn which is approximately 10% lower than MPF’s historical 5 year quarterly average and 13% lower than corresponding Q2 numbers for the past 5 years. MPF net inflows mirror the employment landscape however factors such as reduced voluntary contributions, permanent departures and early retirement can also skew short term net inflow data. It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact factor but one cannot rule out any reason for the sharp and unexpected short term drop.
