I'm delighted to announce the launch of the TempoCap Liquidity Indices, which, on a quarterly basis, track the largest European VC-backed exits since January 2020. We are tracking three main types of exits: all cash, cash and shares, and public listings.   We struggled to find this information in a single place or in a comprehensive format, so we decided to compile it ourselves from a range of data sources. Of course, we may have missed some exits, so please don't hesitate to get in touch if we have.   Here are a few notable trends from the data: 🔴 On all cash exits: A limited number of these were above $1 billion in Europe over the last nearly five years - we counted only five. Out of the top 15 cash exits, six were companies from the U.K., four from Germany, three from France, and two from Scandinavia - including the largest, Tink. 14 out of the top 15 exits were to strategics (with only one PE buyer), and 60% of buyers were U.S. companies. The average time to exit from the founding date was ten years. 🔴 On exits for cash and shares: There have been a limited number of these above $1 billion in Europe over the last circa five years, too —we counted only four. The U.K. had five companies out of the top 15, and interestingly, two each came from Poland and Germany, while the largest, Wolt, is Finnish. Again, 60% of buyers were from the U.S. The average time to exit from the founding date is nine years. 🔴 On public listings: Here, all 15 listings were above $1 billion—but some didn't stay above that level post-IPO, and three are no more! Out of the top 15, seven (or nearly half) came from the U.K., three came from Germany, and the largest, UI Path, came from Romania. The average time to IPO from the founding date was 11 years. What would be the future of documents in the new AI world? I think we will see significant changes outside the contracts and legally binding documents. The most important change will be that content is more generated v/s written. 1. Creation and Writing ⏩ Generation and Editing. 2. Static documents ⏩ Live/Fluidic/Assembly of content. 3. Searching of docs ⏩ Querying for info. 4. Same doc for all ⏩ Personalized info for each. 5. Text-heavy docs ⏩ Multi-modal and info-rich. 6. Coarse Access control ⏩ Fine-grained node level access control. 7. Version control of doc ⏩ Version control of node. 8. Remembering docs ⏩ Remembering prompts/queries. This transition will take time, but I am seeing the beginning. What else one should expect to see?

The recent report by Index Ventures highlights a critical shift in the European startup ecosystem. Seven countries have now further aligned their laws to enable employee ownership, a move that could significantly enhance our competitiveness on the global stage. This is a promising development, but it's only the beginning. 📊 The data is clear: stock options have been a cornerstone of Silicon Valley's success, driving innovation and attracting top talent. Europe, however, has been held back by bureaucratic hurdles and premature taxation. To truly compete with the U.S. and China, we need a coordinated industrial policy, rapid decision-making, and substantial investment. What I’ve learned from my experience: 💪Empowering employees with ownership stakes not only attracts talent but also enables a culture of innovation and commitment. While on average around 20%  of a US late stage startup is owned by employees, in Europe this number is roughly cut in half. 🌍Countries like Germany, France, Portugal, and the UK are leading the way, but we need a unified approach across Europe to create a truly competitive ecosystem. The other countries moving forward come from the Baltic: Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania. 🌱Massive investment in startups, particularly in climate-tech, is essential for sustainable growth and decarbonization.In 2023 Europe's share of total global climate VC reached a record high of 43%. This shows that real commitment makes us a key global player in the market. 👉 What do we need now? It's evident that Europe has the potential to become a global leader in innovation and sustainability. However, this requires collective effort and strategic alignment. VC world can be cruel and unforgiving. With LPs more and more pushing for distribution and liquidity, fund managers in the mid-tenure of their fund with zero DPI and TVPI around 1.0 would have much more difficulty to raise new fund. The ability to fundraise is one of the crucial indications and validation of the job for VCs. Key highlights from the article below: Thirteen percent of venture General Partners (GPs) no longer plan to raise another fund due to LP pullback. This rate has doubled since H1 2023 when only 6% of GPs had no plans for another fund. Nearly 44% of venture firms surveyed in mid-2023 had previously postponed their fundraising plans due to concerns about overexposure to the asset class. Many emerging managers entered venture capital in 2019 or 2020 when the LP market supported more funds. However, slow exits in the first half of 2024 have led to challenges in raising second funds without significant cash distributions to LPs. Some venture GPs are now actively participating in the secondaries market to demonstrate returns. Despite the challenges, GPs who secured fresh capital remain optimistic. In 2023, women-founded #startups in Europe raised just 1.8% of the total capital invested in venture-backed startups - a figure that’s only slightly higher in the US at 2%, according to the World Economic Forum. Although I really hope that one day the industry finds a way to overcome its similarity bias, the reality today is typically that diverse founders have to adjust to the industry bias. "Venture Debt has had its best year on record" 💥   This year's Atomico State of European Tech record says it in bold: this is the biggest year for debt financing in Europe on record.   📊 Debt as a % of total venture investments is highest ever: close to 15%.   📈 Total debt financing in Europe reaches almost $4,8 billion.   🧊 And according to Atomico and Dealroom.co, this is only the tip of the iceberg.   👀 For me this looks like a definitive breakthrough of debt financing in entrepreneurial finance.   It rhymes what we at Capital Mills are seeing in the market: more and more companies are aiming for sustainable profitable growth, and looking for financing options that match that ambition.   Click on the link below to acces the whole report

📊 According to the latest figures from PitchBook, valuations of early-stage companies stabilized in all sectors in the first half of 2024, with an increase of 17.3% compared to 2023. In particular, the average size of early-stage deals has increased by 43.9% over the same period. Even if these figures indicate a certain recovery, it is still too early to declare a turning point. ⚠️The reality is, the VC market remains filled with uncertainty. Interest rate developments will play a crucial role, but they're not the only factor at play. Geopolitical tensions, such as the conflict in the Middle East and the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, along with the upcoming U.S. elections, add layers of unpredictability. So, how should startups navigate these uncertain times? 💪 More IPOs may be on the horizon, but I'm not optimistic. “VC funding is now a rare and expensive commodity, and founders are being encouraged to focus again on business fundamentals and capital efficiency. As a result, Venture Debt is now a topic of discussion in most Board meetings, and almost every Startup that’s raising institutional capital (seed to Series D) is thinking about Venture Debt as a meaningful addition to their capital stack.” These are timely and important conversations to be had by founders, management teams, and early investors. And it’s encouraging to see demand for debt continue to increase. But it’s not hard to see why. What’s happening in the industry now can be attributed to a few factors: ✔ We are experiencing a recalibration from the “easy money” era of high valuations. Many venture equity providers are now essentially hoarding capital and waiting for cap tables to self-correct to reasonable levels. ✔ Equity is expensive, especially for late-stage companies. Venture debt has become a more compelling alternative to equity dilution for companies that want to avoid a down round. ✔ Founders are realizing that venture debt is not rescue financing. Rather, companies with consistent revenue and a clear path to profitability are increasingly seeing debt as a means of propelling further growth. While no one can predict the future, we’re very optimistic about the role that debt can (and will) play for late-stage startups throughout the remainder of the year and beyond.

This is not only portfolio company #23 for the PT1 funds but also our second bet on battery storage technology. Why are we so bullish on this sector and Terra One specifically? Decentralized storage enables the green energy transition by offloading stressed grids and also already today can earn decent $$/€€ if the operations & energy trading is done in a clever way, what is exactly Terra One's AI-enabled secret sauce. These IRRs are highly attractive for deep-pocket infra/renewable-investors that need to look beyond traditional solar, wind and RE-assets as the ROIs there are melting off.
