Great event organized yesterday by Zvica Goltzman from the Israel Innovation Authority רשות החדשנות (IAI) at the beautiful The Peres Center for Peace and Innovation, to promote and support #semiconductor #startups in Israel Dror Bin (IAI CEO) opened the event, followed by Hanan Brand and Aviv Zeevi. In his presentation, Hanan showed how much of private investment flows to areas such as Cyber, Media, Org. SW and Fintech - and how the untapped potential of many of the #deeptech areas, that are mostly supported by public money. This was followed by an investors' panel, moderated by Kerem Nevo. Here are a few insights: ✲Ben Rabinowitz (Amiti) invited entrepreneurs to engage early and consult with VCs, before they come to pitch their company. ✲Dov Moran (Grove Ventures) emphasized that entrepreneurs should have a very crisp answer to the following question: "I'm the #1 in ____", and make sure this is a big enough market. ✲Merav Weinryb (Sunvest Capital Partners) encouraged would-be founders to consult with people with the relevant experience who have "been there, done that". ✲Zvika Orron (Viola Ventures) re-iterated the importance of the right CEO from day-1. This was followed by another great panel of start-up founders, headed by Zvica. Here are some noteworthy points: ✲Robert Giterman (RAAAM™ Memory Technologies) talked about his journey from the #academia to the start-up world and highlighted to value of partnering with Silicon Catalyst's #ecosystem. ✲Alon Yehezkely (Wiliot) described out-of-the-box ways to solve complex challenges, such as running 8 tapeouts in 12 months, and progressing in an #agile way. ✲Guy Koren (founder of Xsight Labs LTD) mentioned the many pitfalls on the entrepreneurs' journey and, again, encouraged them to consult with people with the right experience. Besides the great presentations and panels, it was a great opportunity to meet many friends and passionate entrepreneurs working on some very cool deeptech ideas. #Israelinnovation

What an inspiring morning we had yesterday! Maya Schwartz, CEO of the Israeli High-Tech Association, launched the SHE tech conference by Supersonas, which was held at KLA in Migdal HaEmek. Maya highlighted the current situation of the high-tech industry during this challenging period and the presence of women in the high-tech sector, which has even more significant challenges. Did you know that: • Women lead less than 10% of startups founded in the last decade. • Less than 5% of the capital raisings are done by women and with less money for startups, especially in the early stages. • As investment rounds increase, the proportion of women decreases. Our collaboration with Supersonas is very significant for us. The Israeli High-Tech Association is working to promote the presence of women in key positions within the Israeli high-tech sector. Our own Avi Tel-Or, CTO of Intel Ignite Tel-Aviv, spoke at #ChipEx2024 about the state of Israel's semiconductor startup ecosystem. His conclusion: there is a great opportunity to reignite Israel’s Semicon startup scene. Take a look at Avi’s key takeaways: 📍 Israeli startups have played a pivotal role in the global semiconductor industry, bringing major players to our shores. Intel itself has expanded its activity in Israel based on startups, acquiring 13 Israeli based startups over the years. 🌎 The pipeline of new semiconductor startups in Israel is dwindling, with only one new semiconductor startup founded last year. This is particularly concerning when we see it’s not a global trend. Compared to Europe, the US, and the UK, Israel lags in semiconductor startup growth. 📉 Over the years the focus in Israel has shifted dramatically to SaaS and cybersecurity, with 80% of exits last year in cybersecurity. This shift has led to a stark imbalance in our tech ecosystem. 💡 SW-HW Synergy is essential: Semiconductor startups must understand the broader ecosystem, from AI models to cloud applications and beyond. Software startups – developing AI models to cloud applications, and beyond – should be in close collaboration with hardware designers. A balanced investment across domains is essential to maintain Israel’s global tech hub status. ⚙️ There are very good reasons to invest and build semiconductors in Israel. Silicon is at the heart of a new economy that Intel Corporation’s CEO Pat Gelsinger calls "Siliconomy," with semiconductors enabling modern economies. We’re seeing a breakthrough in AI, where applications are justifying new roadmaps of silicon. Intel alone is investing $25 billion in semiconductor infrastructure in Israel. 🔑 Israel has 8% of the global semiconductor talent and deep expertise across all stages. Tower Semiconductor Rides AI Surge with Silicon Photonics and Silicon Germanium Tower Semiconductor is leveraging the AI boom, with plans to double its silicon photonics revenue to $100M this year and potentially double it again in 2024, according to President Marco Racanelli. The Israeli chip foundry, ranked 7th globally, is using advanced silicon photonics and silicon germanium technologies to enable faster, more energy-efficient data transfers. The company boasts over 50 silicon photonics customers, including seven of the top 11 datacom transceiver makers, and holds a market-leading >50% share in transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) and drivers. Analysts suggest these technologies are crucial for AI-driven optical interconnects, especially as data centers transition to co-packaged optics. To expand capacity, Tower has partnered with Intel Corporation and STMicroelectronics, securing cost-effective fab access for its power management ICs and other products. This strategic move aligns with increasing Western demand amid geopolitical shifts away from Taiwan and China. With silicon photonics projected to account for 10% of Tower’s revenue within two years, the company is well-positioned in the AI-driven semiconductor market.
