I was in a review with a client, discussing performance across their sales teams. The pressure on numbers was intense, and attrition was high. Most teams were struggling, except one. Curious, I turned to their Manager and asked, “What’s your secret?” “I take ownership for the success of my team" he said and then went on to explain... I help my team perform. I teach them what I know. I give them a few sales to get them going. I go to meetings with them, guiding them. If they do well, they earn incentives. If they earn incentives, they stay. I also know them personally he added, their families, hobbies, and interests. I looked at him and smiled and thought to myself. How simple ! Nothing groundbreaking. No magic formula. Just fundamental leadership. And yet, it made me wonder, if it’s this simple, why aren’t more Managers doing it? What’s stopping them? Is it mindset? Time? A lack of accountability?
